wait, the g2 was not originally for my little pony? what was it for then?

Can’t find the source for it right now (so take this with a grain of salt I guess) but I seem to remember they were originally designed by Kenner as a general pony toy. Before they were produced Kenner was acquired by Hasbro, who then decided to produce the g2 design under the My Little Pony brand. The first year g2s are also marked with ‘Kenner’ on the box as well as Hasbro.

I know "trust me" isn't much of a source, but... I had the amazing opportunity to talk to one of the Kenner designers at the Great Ohio Toy Show last March. He was searching for Princess Gwenevere and the Jewel Riders figures because he sold his prototypes when going through financial difficulties a few years back. I was one of the very few vendors there who had them. When he told me he used to work for Kenner, I immediately asked about the G2 ponies and he confirmed they were started at Kenner and taken over by Hasbro with the transition. We also got to talking about Unicorn Academy and how much better the toys could be and how much we miss Toys'R'Us.

So, yeah. Confirmed by a former Kenner employee to a vendor at a toy show not far from where Kenner used to be based!
