Puppy Love || Original Oneshot
NOTE: This was slightly rushed, so I’m sorry if it’s not all that good. It’s also kind of short, so I apologize!
Arthur whistled merrily, watching his dog, Red, sniff around the sidewalk. Red, the calm foxhound he was, softly padded his paws onto the pavement while looking up to the people passing by him and his owner. His attention was slightly changed from the concrete and onto the upcoming houses; a few small figures with tails swaying in the air came into view. The neighborhood cats watched in horror as the dog neared their post, perched on top of fences and walls.
Red was naturally a good dog, always the peace-maker between other dog fights, listening to orders, and overall, just being friendly. There was just one thing, though; he loved scaring and teasing the neighborhood cats sometimes.
Today was one of those instances.
Arthur watched him raise his head, giving a bark to the felines. Red perked up to scene scurrying out of his vision. Arthur could imagine that his companion was snickering on the inside.
“Having fun there, boy?” Red only howled in delight as a response to Arthur’s question. “And here I thought you were nice.” The male tugged slightly on the crimson leash connected to Red.
The foxhound sat down on the ground, indicating he was tired. Arthur continued to make conversation with the dog. He brushed Red’s spotted fur with his fingers, and quickly put down a bowl he had packed and poured water into it. It was a normal and calming experience like every other time.
It would’ve been if Red wasn’t suddenly tackled to the sidewalk by a golden retriever.
“Bokuto!”
A feminine voice shouted from Arthur’s left. He was met with the picture of a woman running at him at full speed just like it had been with Red and the other dog; only this time, she wasn’t going to ram into him.
She quickly took back her dog’s leash, and Red was thankful to no longer be with the hyperactive golden retriever. Arthur took this time to study her features. He watched her auburn hair sweep to the side and the sweat on her freckled skin. The woman quickly bowed her head to Arthur, spouting out meek apologies. Arthur couldn’t help but find her cute.
“I’m so sorry. Bokuto can get a bit too excited when we go outside.” Her bashfulness had not just been evident in her shaky tone but in her blushing cheeks as well. “The name’s Eliza. Eliza Thornbury. I just moved into this neighborhood, and I thought it would be good to explore with Bokuto over here. I guess I underestimated how much he missed going outside.”
“No, no. It’s okay!” Arthur readjusted his glasses and he felt his palms go sweaty. His ears tinted red, and his pale skin made sure that it was as obvious as the sun in the sky. The male clamored out a shaking hand, “So, uh, where’d you live before here?” Red curiously looked up to his owner, noting the difference in his behavior as well as speech. Bokuto, as well, did little to hide the fact that he was intrigued to say the least at their respective owners’ interactions.
“Oh, just a town or three east. A little place you can get to in one train ride, so I could visit anytime.” Eliza giggled, eyes peering down to her dog quietly sniffing at Red. “I just wanted to go someplace new, not too far but not too near either.” She noticed the foxhound nudge at Bokuto’s fur, the golden retriever happy enough to return the gesture back. Arthur followed her gaze as well to the two balls of fur interacting, and he was sure he’d never seen Red so casual around another dog. The two gaze in wonder when Bokuto and Red match the playfulness of one another.
Arthur cleared his throat. “There’s this park, and it has a stand with the best hot chocolate to get you through the day. Do you want to go with me?” His question was met with an excited bark from Red.
“What do you say, boy?” Eliza looked down to Bokuto and was greeted with the same reaction. “Alright, I’ll go. Might be a good chance to get to know this place better.” The female held Bokuto’s leash tightly as Arthur turned around to lead the way. She matched his pace, and they both felt a warm idea slip into the back of their minds. The two felt like this could lead somewhere, and so did their furry friends.
