20 important study skills/tips iāve learned from my professors
1. start studying a week before every quiz/test. seriously.
2. watch youtube videos/ted talks on the topics you are learning about.
3. get lots of sleep! sleep helps you process the dayās events, including what you learned.
4. write out your notes. itās proven that handwritten notes help you learn better than typed out notes.
5. donāt just read what your professor gives you. find academic journals, books, etc. that correspond with your subjects.
6. read the news! especially in the social sciences/humanities, connecting concepts with current events helps you understand and process more easily.
7. exercise! this doesnāt have to be going on runs or lifting weights, it could even just be going for a 20 minute walk. just get your blood pumping, itāll help you focus.
8. study at your desk. it may be tempting to study in bed, but your brain connects your bed with sleep, so youāll get tired more quickly.
9. reviewing notes doesnāt have to be something you sit down and do for an hour. skim through them and test your memory while eating breakfast!
10. expand your study time throughout the day to avoid burnout. for example, rather than studying for 5 hours straight, study for an hour here and there in between your activities.
11. make your notes organized and easy to read, but not distracting. bright colors and flashy notes may seem better, but can sometimes distract from the purpose of the notes.
12. use apps such as quizlet. this way, you can go through definitions while waiting in lines or walking to class.
13. itās more important to know concepts rather than facts. for example, you should be able to take what you know and apply it to different situations, not just the situation the textbook gives you.
14. just because the professor doesnāt require you to readĀ textbook, doesnāt mean you shouldnāt. it helps explain concepts in a different way than your professor, and a lot of times hearing two different explanations for the same concept helps you understand it.
15. read in advance. read the textbook before your professor begins going over the chapter, so when he/she does, you can easily follow what they are saying.
16. do any extra credit work that comes your way. even if you donāt need the extra boost now, you might later.
17. go to class!! if you always skip class and show up at office hours completely lost on the concepts, theyāll laugh in your face. theyāll take you 100x more seriously if you show up.
18. however, if you are sick, take a day off. itās more beneficial to you in the long run.Ā
19. learn how to sayĀ ānoā. if you have an 8 am the next day, donāt stay out until midnight with your friends.Ā
20. donāt stress too hard over quizzes. if you expect them to go horribly, they will. you got this.
weird study tip:
if u donāt feel motivated, pretend ur in a movie or tv show. you know the scenes where theyāre on their bed with their feet tucked up and crossed at the ankle, and theyāre cracking open highlighters with their teeth and poring over a textbook with smooth rock music playing? that. bonus points for a perfect messy bun and spencer hastings outfit.
yall? i got 157 notes on this? legit all my posts have like 6 or 7? omg?
back to school
i know, i know, iām a little bit early. itās all good, i have anxiety, i plan ahead constantly. i figured iād share some of my plans to prepare myself for heading back to school.
1. fix your sleep schedule
for school i wake up at 6:30, in the summer i wake up at 12. and recently i decided to fuck that up even more by pulling an all-nighterĀ and just, in general, screwing up my sleep schedule. iāllĀ need about a month to fix all this damage, but in general, you should start reacquaintingĀ yourself with your school schedule about two weeks before you have to head back.
2. figure out your note keeping system
iām switching things up this year, and i wonāt be using the binder system iāve had all throughout high school. itās simply to heavy for my walk to and from school. instead, iāllĀ be using a filing folder, and keeping loose leaf paper, as well as the weekās lessons in there, and once the week is over, iāll transfer my notes to the binder system at home, which should limit the weight i carry. also, thisāll force me to have better organization, and hopefully make weekly review easier. just as a rule of thumb, refreshing your note keeping system is something you should do annually, at the start of a new year or even before a new semester; you know whatās been working and what hasnāt been.
3. gather breakfast ideas
i have about ten minutes scheduled in my morning routine during the school year for breakfast. and about five of those minutes are spent figuring out what to eat. i want to gather simple breakfast ideas that i can test out now, so i donāt waste time deciding what to eat. this just, in general, makes mornings less of a hassle and can help make sure youāre getting a good start to the day.
4. take stock of your supplies
i need a lunchbag and highlighters, my previous ones are no longer able to function, so i need to replace them. i donāt, however, need new pencils, i have plenty. doing an inventory check can really help prevent buying duplicates of something you thought you didnāt have.
5. create achievable goals
this year is my final year of high school, and then iām off to university, most of my goals centre around applications and just graduating. but there are other things i know i need to do. embracing study habits for one. iām hoping to do so by staying in the library after school instead of walking home right away because i know i canāt get work done as effectively at home. iāll also be doing a review for exams all throughout the year, instead of the day before, by creating flashcards and mindmaps for each days lesson. set a general goal, then add the steps youāll need to take to achieve it.
6. check your courses
iām dropping out of physics because i donāt need to be taking it and it will give me a spare instead of a full course load. i need to talk to my guidance counsellor before school starts because of it. as well, i like to make sure iām in the correct classes and that my schedule is as balanced as possible. some schools may not allow this for regular students, mine does. make sure youāre taking what you need to take and what will allow you to succeed.
7. put dates in your planner
my school offers a tentative list of events going on through the year, with set exam and break times. i like to keep track of these, and setting them in my planner makes it easier to see how my year will play out. if your school doesnāt offer this, check out past years scheduling so that you have a general feel for how your year will go.
these are just some of the things iām doing to ensure this year goes smoothly for me. let me know what yāall are doing too!
how I keep myself sane during summer break.
I think we can all agree that the mere idea of having holiday breaks from boring lectures and all-nighter study sessions sounds like heaven; although this romanticized idea of having so much free time often turns into wasted summer days, oversleeping, and basically an anti-social teenage version of house arrest.Ā so, to help you out (or, more to help Myself) here are some things I do to keep myself busy, on a budget (kind of), and mentally healthy during long breaks from school.
continue your morning routine. this is important; by this I mean to basically treat your summer mornings as you would your school mornings, without the rush and alarm.Ā brush your teeth, brush your hair, start/continue a skincare routine,Ā get out of your pajamas and into real clothes, make your bed, make some coffee, eat some breakfast, do it with some music on, whatever you want. this keeps your mind and body into a daily routine. donāt let all your precious no-class mornings of summer go to waste!
savor sleeping in, but not too much. I know its super tempting to go to bed at like 2 AM and wake up the nextĀ āmorningā at 12PM, but trust me, youāll regret fucking up your sleep schedule once you actually have to set an alarm and get your ass to class next fall. Iām not saying you should force yourself to set a summer alarm (although, if you really want to train yourself this isnāt a bad idea tbh) but for the love of god, at least go to sleep and wake up at reasonable times. donāt waste your entire day!!
force yourself to see your friends a couple times a week, even if you really donāt want to. obviously this excludes mental health days, but Iāve found that spending time with my friends actually distracts me from any anxiety Iāve felt during the past week. I love my alone time, but human interaction is super important both mentally and physically. as college students weāre all pretty much broke, so donāt underestimate the power of free things- watching netflix at someoneās house, having a boardgame night, going toĀ parks, you name it. as long as youāre with your friends, youāll have a great time!
clean out your music library + make a playlist or two.Ā yāall know I love a good playlist. this is something totally 100% FREE, and a perfect way to make use of your free time. delete all the stuff you donāt listen to anymore and make a few playlists of your favorite songs, or even go with playlist themes to organize your songs. itās fun and your future self will probably thank you later for getting rid of so much audible junk.
get back into reading. this is something that was on my personal summer to-do list. I havenāt read a book for myself (aka not for a class) in sooo long, and let me tell you- I donāt know why I ever stopped reading. I know for a fact that once the semester starts Iāll have zero free time to read for myself, so summer is the perfect time to get into a new book or two!
eat your three meals a day +hydrate.Ā I mean this. its very easy to skip/forget meals when you really donāt have any set schedule whatsoever, so plan your meals into your day. even make an alarm if its necessary. also: if you donāt know if youāre drinking enough water, you probably arenāt.
deep clean your room/workspace/closet. Iām super guilty for putting this off but, long breaks like summer are the perfect times to deep clean! what makes it easier for me to clean my room is to go section by section, which means not doing it all in a day (because that gets hella overwhelming and stressful, let me tell you). grab a garbage bag, put on some tunes, and pick a section to clean that day; youāll be done with the entire space in no time!
outfit plan. for someone like me who has way too much in my closet and somehow stillĀ ānever has anything to wearā, this is essential! set some outfits out on the floor/bed and take pics of them on your phone so that you can look back on them for some style inspo the next time you haveĀ āabsolutely NOTHING to wearā.
find a new hobby, even if youāre bad at it. make some collages of your friends, make a scrapbook, learn photoshop, paint a little, learn how to sew, garden, cook, practice your phone photography skills⦠if there was a time for you to try out new things, itās NOW.
make a post about all the shit you should do. Iām doing it right now. literally. youāre reading it right now. its not a bad idea.
if you know you have shit to do, plan it into your day! this is where the planner/agenda/bullet journal aspect comes in. having no class and no homework is not an excuse to stop planning out your day, your week, or your month. make some task lists and pencil in your dentist appointments and dates with people and whatnot; and even journal your days while youāre at it! if youāre a planner, never stop.Ā Future You will thank you for it, I promise.
