Something I haven't seen anyone talking about with regards to the Project Hail Mary soundtrack is just how unwaveringly human it is.

Like all alien movies, at its core it is all about humanity: our creativity, our ingenuity, our capacity for selflessness, our capacity to fight for our own survival, our need for companionship, our love of the unknown, our fear of the unknown, our ability to contain a multitude of contradictions in a single person. And the soundtrack emphasizes that!

Usually, when a score wants to evoke humanity, it will use string instruments like violins, violas, and cellos (see lord of the rings, interstellar, schindler's list, last of the mohicans, etc) because their notes are mostly in the range of the human voice. But you know what's closer to the human voice than string instruments? The human voice itself!

I remember watching the movie for the first time and thinking, "Wow, I haven't heard this much choir in a soundtrack since Lord of the Rings!" Then, about halfway through the movie, I realized, "No, this puts Lord of the Rings to SHAME!" And it makes sense because Hail Mary is all about the human condition and it's AWARE of that fact. The choral background is just one of the many ways it highlights that
