Using Virtual Reality to help those with learning disability
.fusion-fullwidth-1 padding-left: px !important; padding-right: px !important;
Belfast based C60 Architects have been appointed to help Mencap in the development of Virtual reality (VR) tools that replicate a real environment (or create an imaginary setting), and simulate the user’s physical presence in this environment. Through the project Mencap wants to explore how VR technology can be used to support the facilitation of Day Opportunities by replicating the environment, activity and processes involved. Individuals involved will be able to experience a particular scenario before taking part in it.
In its first stage the project aims to cover 5 scenes, but eventually it is hoped this can be expanded to provide a wide library of scenarios. Typical situations to be captured will include day to day activities like catching a bus, being in a work environment, accessing services or activities like buying a coffee.
Jan Tregelles, Mencap CEO trying out VR
This VR 360° experience of such everyday activities could be used to support someone who is very anxious of trying something new like taking the bus. This experience could be viewed numerous times in the lead up to carrying out the activity to reduce uncertainty of an unfamiliar activity / environment.
It can also incorporate video footage or different tasks being carried out, to give the service user an idea of the work that is entailed in various jobs, to help them make an informed choice at vocational profiling stage, in advance of exploring these through work experience placements.
.fusion-fullwidth-2 padding-left: px !important; padding-right: px !important;
The use of VR technology has the potential to become a key to unlocking someone’s inherent uncertainty with change, by making it a routine before they even step outside. The same principle can be used to help someone anxious about moving to a new location by creating the opportunity to explore a new location through a virtual reality interface.
The project is an evolution leading from Architectural projects that C60 Architects are already working on with Mencap and the specialist housing provider Golden Lane Housing. C60 Director Roger Perrott said, “We use VR in all our projects to help our clients visualise how a scheme will look and experience the spaces prior to construction. It has fundamentally changed how we work, with the design process becoming a more immersive experience. As Architects we design space; this applies equally to the virtual world just as much as the real world, so VR design is a natural evolution from traditional Architectural design.”
“When we saw first-hand how the design process with C60 Architects allowed us to experience a space or environment, we realised that there was huge potential to use the technology in other aspects of our work. The project in collaboration with C60 is an exciting evolution which uses skills and expertise from the construction sector to help address challenges faced by the people we care for.”
Barry McMenamin – Regional Operations Manager, Mencap
Anticipated benefits of the project include:
Reduce anxiety and fear surrounding visiting or trying something new and unfamiliar.
Use of commonly available tools like laptops or tablets to gain direct access to VR experiences
The cost effective process allows bespoke scenarios to be created for specific clients
The initial VR scenarios can be added to over time, creating a library style resource
Mencap will continue to be at the forefront of tackling the challenges presented by learning disability

“The VR allows us to bring a development alive. In a way it’s like taking the purchaser to the movies and selling them their dream. With competition in every sector of business, using VR gives the developer an advantage on house sales and also it’s a great design tool if used early in the process.”

Leading the Way in Virtual Reality Presentation
Check out the latest issue of the Institute of Directors, Inspiring Business to see an article on how C60 is leading the way in the use of Virtual Reality to communicate design ideas:
“Your gleaming new expansive, Grade A office stretches out in front of you. The contemporary furnishings, paint on the walls and shiny new equipment is all ready to go. Your architect has fulfilled the brief and your business is about to step up into the big leagues. Then you take the virtual-reality googles off and you`re back in the meeting room.
Virtual Reality (VR) allows designers to interact and discuss issues with colleagues in new ways, to push the boundaries of visualization and deliver a new experience to clients that gives them a better understanding of their building or space, before it leaves the drawing board.
“We took a decision when C60 was set up that we would design and present all out projects in VR. By giving our clients their own VR goggles they become part of the design team and are able to experience designs in real time from anywhere in the world,” says C60 founder Roger Perrott.
The feedback from the clients helps develop the service and experience at C60.
“The VR experience gave us the opportunity to not only stand in each room and see what it was going to look like but to really focus in on the ‘nitty gritty’ of design,” says Leigh, a private client for a Bespoke home.
With Facebook`s purchase of the VR start-up Oculus for $2 billion in 2014, it is clear that the biggest online industry players are convinced of its future. As VR develops from a gaming platform into a more social experience, so the take-up of this new technology will explode. It will become common place to have a Virtual Reality Room or Pod within your home or office.
Being able to “try before you buy” is a very powerful tool for companies to convince their clients and customers to buy into their project, products or services. For C60 Architects the use of VR is central to the design process for all their projects, giving their clients a competitive edge when marketing developments. The ability to view a future project in immersive VR is allowing tenants and purchasers to commit to deals earlier in the project timeline and significantly reduce funding costs for developers.
“In a world where tablets and mobile devices are so readily available and technology is making such fast advances it is important to be ‘current’ with these,” explains the Director of Springfield Developments.
“The VR allows us to bring a development alive. In a way it’s like taking the purchaser to the movies and selling them their dream. With competition in every sector of business, using VR gives the developer an advantage on house sales and also it’s a great design tool if used early in the process.
I see VR as the future of online marketing and house sales. It lets the purchasers view their new home from any location whether in the Estate agents office, to sitting in a park on the other side of the world!”
In a July interview with Bloomberg, Zuckerberg explained how virtual reality is the natural progression from sharing experiences via video, just as video was the natural progression of sharing experiences via photos. VR, then, will almost literally allow us to stand in another person’s shoes as they explore the world.
Working at the forefront of VR development often means that we are using the available technology to its limit. However, by building partnerships with other like-minded companies we are ensuring that the latest Virtual Reality tools are available right here in Northern Ireland. As retail and service provision moves into the virtual world there are new opportunities opening up all the time. Virtual Reality will not be a passing fad. It will be here to stay and Northern Irish companies need to get catch the wave or risk getting left behind.”

A Taste of Things to Come...
The C60 Team have been out following the company ethos of sustainability with an evening of ‘sustainable food’ prepared by John Paul Leake, head chef at Belfast’s Merchant Hotel.
The event entitled “A Taste of Things to Come…” was held in conjunction with the Northern Ireland Science Festival and featured a selection of sustainable dishes utilising from local resources and crafted into a fine dining experience. It was clear that the chef team at the Merchant had fully embraced the concept, providing stunning fine dining using foraged local produce including mushrooms, wild herbs, seaweed as well as vegan options, game and local salmon.

Planning Enforcement Cases Continue to Grow
In the most recent planning statistics published by the Department of Infrastructure covering Q3 of 2016, there is has been a small drop in the number of new cases compared with Q2, but the year on year trend continues to show a steep increase with new planning enforcement cases being up 18.8% on the same period in 2015.
The Q2 high reported for 2016 is the highest number of cases opened since 2010 and given the increase in enquiries received by C60 Architects and Town Planners in relation to planning enforcement or regularisation and retrospective approval, the trend looks set to continue.
If you have received a letter threatening planning enforcement or a formal planning enforcement notice, act quickly as failure to comply with a formal notice is a criminal offence and if convicted of an offence can attract a hefty fine, not to mention a large legal bill.

Apply for the Community Halls Programme
Department for Communities (DfC) Community Halls Programme
The Department for Communities (DFC) are calling for applications for the Community Halls Programme. This is an opportunity to apply for up to a £25,000 grant towards the upkeep of your community hall. Communities Minister, Paul Givan, has encouraged eligible organisations to the Community Halls Pilot Grant Programme to apply for the funding before the approaching deadline.
The Programme is open to all types of community halls – church halls, scout halls, Orange halls, AOH halls, sports clubs, village halls and other not for profit community halls. The application period will close at 12.00pm on 23 November.
Mr Givan said:
“A Community hall is much more than bricks and mortar for those who use them. They provide a gathering place where people can feel involved in their local community and supported in their lives. This pilot programme aims to alleviate some of the pressures on local community groups and will help to sustain and support these vital spaces.”
The Minister for Communities, Paul Givan has made available up to £500,000 capital funding in 2016/2017 to operate a Pilot Programme for community halls.
Many community organisations use community halls in urban and rural areas. Examples include church halls, scout halls, orange halls and other halls and centres which are used for a multitude of activities.
The Department recognises that many of these premises need support to undertake minor works to maintain and/ or enhance their valuable contribution to the local community and wider society.
This Ministerial DfC initiative is being delivered by Departmental officials who will oversee the award and ensure that the benefits are realised.
Any grant awarded will be a maximum of £25,000.
The closing date for applications is strictly Wednesday 23 November 2016 at noon. Please note that incomplete applications or applications received after the closing date and time will be deemed invalid and not be considered.
You can download the application here or click the link below to complete it online.
This grant is only eligible for expenditure incurred from the date of award until 31 March 2017.

Passive House Design Northern Ireland
We are very excited to be attending the Towards Zero Carbon Dwellings – Passive House in Northern Ireland briefing tonight at Ulster University.
This is guaranteed to be a really interesting briefing on the future of building in Northern Ireland both from a technical and a political perspective. It will include talks on Passive House Research in the province, The new Passive House Classifications and Stephen Agnew MLA will give an insight into the future for buildings in Northern Ireland.
At C60 we know all about this amazing standard of building. Let us explain why we believe in it so much…. The Passive House concept represents today’s highest energy standard with the promise of slashing the heating energy consumption of buildings by an amazing 90%.
“C60 offer a full Passive House Design service”
A Passive House is a very well-insulated, virtually air-tight building that is primarily heated by passive solar gain and by internal gains from people, electrical equipment, etc. Energy losses are minimized. Any remaining heat demand is provided by an extremely small source. An energy recovery ventilator provides a constant, balanced fresh air supply. The result is an impressive system that not only saves up to 90% of space heating costs, but also provides a uniquely terrific indoor air quality.
