even beyond my anger at the montreal of it all, it feels like the boston/montreal decades old rivalry of it all isn't treated as a real barrier. because as soon as shane takes the step of actually admitting to himself he's gay and ilya takes the step of saying I love you, that is no longer a factor. because suddenly, team loyalty stops mattering. one of them simply leaves his team and now ta da the team rivalry is gone!

well, when you get comfortable in a relationship, you become more yourself, and when you’re kinky, you can trust your partner more and more with what you really want, and you get kinkier. IMO total power exchange is the manifestation of Hollanov’s existing power exchange when they start getting comfy with each other.

As far as canon goes: Ilya seeks control and he’s good at managing his family’s affairs; we see him caring for his father and arranging the funeral and setting up a trust. This responsibility is painful, because it’s simultaneously demanded and met with anger and resentment. Taking responsibility for Shane is a relief because his exercise of control creates peace for them both. On Shane’s side, he has already arranged his life to outsource decisions. He has a stylist, an interior designer, a momager. He’s in tension with that, though, because in order to give them that level of control they have to know him intimately, which he cannot allow at any cost. It’s a relief for Ilya to step in and take control, because he can trust Ilya to know him. They’re the goddamn yin yang symbol. It feels good for Ilya to take control, it feels good for Shane to give up control, Shane feeling good makes Ilya feel good, Ilya feeling good makes Shane feel good, and it’s all spiraling up, up, up.

In terms of what it looks like? Ilya sends Shane to the barber with instructions and reference pictures for how to get his hair cut, and Shane spends the next two weeks rubbing the velvet buzz at the nape of his neck thinking about Ilya. Shane can’t decide what to get at a restaurant and texts a picture of the menu to Ilya, who tells him exactly what to order and how many drinks to have and when Shane is drunk-texting him at midnight, Ilya burns knowing that he’s the one who undid him. Shane texts Ilya for permission to come every time he’s jerking off. When they get a night together during the season, Ilya is inspecting Shane to see if he’s keeping himself groomed according to instructions. They’re seeping into every aspect of each other’s lives. They’re long distance but they’re constantly thinking about each other. What a beautiful world.
