NEW DELHI: Gender gap in India's institutes of higher studies has reduced by nine lakh in the last five years with girl students outnumbering men in eight disciplines in 2016-17 academic session, according to a survey of the HRD ministry. The enrolment by the end of 2016-17 academic year stands at 3,57,05,905 with a Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) of 25.2. GER is counted from the number of students enrolled in higher education institutions out of the total population in the age group of 18 to 23 years. Women continue to outnumber men in bachelor's of arts and education. In MBBS there are 99 women per 100 male students, up from 86 in 2012-13, and in BCom up to 93 from 79 in the same period. At MSc level, mathematics, physics and zoology are subjects where the number of women is over 60% while in chemistry it is 56.3%. At postgraduate level, the highest number of enrollment has been for mathematics with a total of 1,43,762 students of which 62.1% are women. In social sciences and

High-doses of Vitamin D can potentially reduce arterial stiffness -- a major risk factor for cardiovascular-related disease and death -- in young vitamin-deficient obese adults, researchers say. For the study, detailed in the journal PLOS ONE, the team looked at African-Americans aged 13-45 -- all of whom had some degree of arterial stiffness -- taking varying doses of the vitamin best known for its role in bone health. While just how Vitamin D is good for our arteries is not completely understood, it appears to impact blood vessel health in many ways, the researchers said. Laboratory studies have shown that mice missing a vitamin D receptor have higher activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, activation of which increases blood vessel constriction, that can contribute to arterial stiffness. Zunroof, a solar installation company, has a unique model to offer — it turns household electricity bills all free. Launched in April 2016 by two IIT-Kharagpur graduates, Pranesh Chaudhary and Sushant Sachan, the platform has managed to achieve the electricity solution by providing Solar PhotoVoltaic (PV) solution to urban home owners in Delhi (NCR). A new study looking at blood stem cells uncovered fresh details surrounding the mechanisms by which alcohol raises the risk of developing cancer. Acetaldehyde and blood stem cells The team fed diluted ethanol to mice and then used chromosome analysis and DNA sequencing to measure any damage caused by acetaldehyde, a chemical produced when alcohol is processed. They focused their attention on a specific cell type: blood stem cells. Blood stem cells, found in blood and bone marrow, are immature blood cells that can develop into any type of blood cell, including white blood cells, platelets, and red blood cells. It is important to understand how alcohol damages these cells, as faulty stem cells are known to cause cancer. Chinese smartphone makers Xiaomi, Vivo and Oppo together in India have posted combined sales of Rs 22,527 crore in the year ending March 2017, according to the latest regulatory filings. Samsung also controls 24 percent of the market in the country and registered quarter-on-quarter growth of 39 percent. The IDC report stated that Lenovo is the third largest seller in India with 9 per cent of market share. The company had slipped to the fifth position in the last quarter with the continuous decline in market share in the first two quarters. In September quarter, its shipments increased by 83 percent.
