This is a beautifully meaningful parallel.

A petal of Aerith's flower floats to both of them and what they do represents their feelings for her. PERFECTLY!

Zack lets the petal land on his hand, he smiles, then lets it go.

Cloud closes his hand around the petal and presses it to his heart.

Zack has love for Aerith but at this point he knows she is in love with Cloud, and in his incredible emotional maturity, he lets her go free. (Zack really is the best.)

Cloud is in love with Aerith but, at this point in the story, doesn't know if she still has feelings for Zack. Then Aerith just sings him a full-on love ballad and, even through his insecurities, he can't hide that he wants to hold her close. She is in his heart. Much like the lyrics in Hollow specify, Cloud does not want to let Aerith go.

If you still doubt who the canon couple is... you are ignoring very blatantly obvious clues.

I don't mean to bash people who prefer Cloud with Tifa. My issue is not that people ship them. My issue is that some (the great majority) Cloti shippers insist that they are the canon couple, when they clearly aren't. This deliberate blindness frustrates me, because it shows that people are willing to ignore the obvious to cater to their personal wishes.

If you ship Cloti I have nothing against you. At all. If you cannot accept the fact that Tifa IS the optional choice, put in there for the player — not for Cloud... then I doubt there's anything I can say to make you see things more objectively.

At the end of the day, just ship and let ship.
