Start of Grad School

I haven’t been on this in ages but here it goes! I started grad school today, I haven’t been in school in 5 years so this is going to be a huge change for me. I’m excited and nervous for this journey. My imposter syndrome was at an all time high this last week but since then I’ve realized I do belong in this space. I’m here to change the world and no one can tell me otherwise!

To all of my first generation grad students, WE GOT THIS! DON’T LET ANY ONE TELL YOU YOU DON’T BELONG IN THEIR SPACE! THIS IS AS MUCH YOURS AS IT IS THEIRS!

Everything happening to the Chicanx/Mexican communities lately is heartbreaking. All the hatred and racism against us has just been amplifying more by the day. There are grown ass teachers saying they want more Days Without Immigrants so the “failing, lazy, disruptive kids” won’t ruin it for the ones who “deserve an education”. They call us lazy and uneducated yet the people responsible for educating the next generation can’t even take the time to understand or be sympathetic towards their students and what they might be going through. And to say all students that are immigrants cause trouble when there are so many Mexican students (documented & undocumented) that have graduated with a 4.0 GPA+ been accepted to universities is so ignorant. The system is built to keep positions like teachers, lawyers, judges, politicians, doctors, harder for us to attain but we have to work towards it. We need to inspire, motivate, and uplift eachother in our communities. We are more than capable of being all the things they tell us we can never be. We need to infiltrate the very spaces that are working against us. It’s so sad there are so many kids growing up right now with a president that doesn’t want them here. A place they call home. And there are so many people saying trump is only cracking down on “illegals” without realizing how dehumanizing it is to call a real living person illegal, without realizing he is revoking visas & green cards, even considering deporting “low income immigrants” because they are poor and people still want to argue like this isn’t oppression happening right in front of you. I’m in a place of privilege being born here & being lightskin/white-passing, but the burden on mi corazón por mi hermanx, mi firme gente is still heavy.

They hate us Mexicans but when Cinco De Mayo comes around white people gonna be crowding all the Mexican restaurants wearing sombreros eating our food and getting drunk. They hate our people but love dipping their hands in our culture.

They hate us Mexicans but stay trying to emulate the Chola look & lifestyle like it’s glamorous and edgy. Copying everything we do to be some “IG baddie”
