Anna Strong and Benjamin Tallmadge

My usual answer would be Caleb but he gets plenty of love on this blog and I felt as though these two fit the spot for today.

Anna and Ben have many similarities in personality and motivation, they’re both passionate, idealistic, and willing to risk everything for what they believe in. Together they push Abraham to take his place in the ring and keep the fire under him by showing him their own passion and commitment to the cause. Throughout the series we see both of them make major personal sacrifices and, frankly, take quite a beating in their own journeys for justice, victory, and ultimately peace.

Turn Week Day 5: Favorite Patriot

Ngl this one is kinda hard bc there are a lot of characters I love but not one that always tops the favorite list. But I think the top two for me are Townsend and Ben. I’ve mentioned before that I love Townsend, he’s one of my favorite characters in the whole show. I love how Townsend is so determined to not be associated with Abe but yet tells his dad about him and invites him to Thanksgiving. I find him very relatable bc I too am anxious and antisocial lmao. And of course I love his final scenes. As for Ben, I love how much he cares and how dedicated he is. His relationship with spying is so interesting - he loses someone he’s close to bc of spying (Nathan Hale) but yet the first ones he turns to when forming the ring are his childhood friends. Even though he risks losing them, they’re still the ppl he trusts most. And I love the parallels between him and André - two young, up-and-coming officers on opposite sides of the war who are each cultivating their own spy network. Not to mention I love Seth Numrich

Turn Week 2021

Day 5 - Favourite Patriot + ficlet (Leave Her, Johnny, Leave Her)

“Oh, leave her, Johnny, leave her… Oh, leave her, Johnny, leave her… The voyage is done and the winds don’t blow and it’s time for us to leave her…”

“What’s that, lieutenant?”

Caleb glances up, away from the tall, helmeted figure talking amidst the other officers in the distance. “Hmm?”

“You were singing, sir.” An ensign is speaking to him. Damn, he should know the man’s name. Hodgkin? His head has been elsewhere lately. At times it felt like the war would never end. Now, at its unravelling, it feels all those years are being compressed into just a few days. He’s pretty sure it’s Hodgkin.

“It’s a seaman’s song,” he says, returning to his watch. “It’s about things ending. We sing it on a ship’s last voyage.”

“It’s lovely, sir,” the ensign ventures, a little timidly. Perhaps it’s too soon for lovely things again. Caleb snorts.

“It’s about how the pay’s shite and you’re glad to see the last of it,” he says.

The ensign falls quiet.

The parade is dispersing now. It was fun, at first. Sitting high above all the folk who were cheering and gawking, feeling like a proper hero for once, relieved and sore and alive. Now, the square feels restless, soldiers milling with civilians, bounties ending and futures spinning out like cartwheels pinging free from their mounts. Caleb can feel the listlessness, can see it in the enlisted men.

None of it in Ben, of course, already chatting away amidst a crowd of well-dressed politicians. No doubt there.

“She would not wear and she would not stay…”

“What will you do, lieutenant?”

“Hmm?” It seems the ensign is determined to make conversation, if the unmoored look in his eye is anything to go by. Caleb sighs. “Dunno. Always come back to the water, me.” He waits. “And yourself?”

“An apprenticeship, sir. With any luck they’ll have me.”

“Good man,” Caleb says, vaguely.

“Would you teach me, sir? The song, sir,” the ensign adds, colouring a little.

“It’s a seaman’s song.  You planning to be a sailor?”

“Could be, sir.”

Caleb throws one last look toward Ben–deeply entrenched, shoulders relaxed, oblivious. Wouldn’t be needing Caleb any time soon. The thought churns a little. Decision made, Caleb swings an arm around the young man’s shoulders.

“Alright. Yeah, alright. Don’t look so happy, it costs an ale. Right now, listen. Oh, the times were hard and the wages low…”

Turn Week 2021, Favorite AU - Abigail reunited with her family

This isn’t exactly an AU since they did film this aspect, but we…just never got to see it. For whatever reason, the scene with Abigail and the little girl she adopted in Nova Scotia with Akinbode and Cicero was cut from the finale. That this didn’t make it on screen is one of my biggest disappointments when it comes to Turn. It would’ve been a truly beautiful, beautiful moment to include with Abe’s ending monologue as the show came to a close. Abigail deserved a send off that saw her free and at peace with her loved ones. 

In Idara Victor’s words from her Instagram: “I know many of you questioned whether or not Abigail made it, and I just want to assure you, as one of our writers morganicink confirmed last night, that she did (hence the coded letter). I admit, I was just as shocked and horrified as you for a second, as we did shoot a larger ending, including the addition of a little girl to the family, the talented skyla_ilece, whose beautiful work you saw in that cart. And here you have it, proof of our happy reunion, on the show and in real life.”

This is 100% canon to me and always will be, but I just really, really wish it was inarguably canon in the show.

Instead of dying at the hands of Abraham, Baker gets taken as a (not so moderately injured) POW. Traded back a year later, he ends up in York City, where he meets a the enigmatic Robert Townsend, one of the few people to not ask him about everything he went through.

So I'm trying to reblog stuff and write BoB, but considering the US is now the Fire Nation, I am really struggling with everything about the American Revolution or even American history. Which is a real problem as a historian and historic presenter. But I don't want to be pulled into a great hole of a depression, either. So I'm really trying to balance and manage myself.
