smooth ride

For obvious horse-obsessed reasons, I love this animal-friendly indie brand Équilibre that creates beauty made for riders. How sweet <3

All of their products are, of course, vegan, and each purchase gives back to horse-related charities.

My favorite from the line of three hero products is the Riders Hand Cream. My hands are a mess mainly because of barn life, so to have a tube of this in my tack trunk and be inspired to put it on before my gloves … is a big step in the right direction.

Created to be quick-absorbing and non-greasy, the formula is made with lavender (shown to be calming to horses - and like, me) and rose geranium essences; red algae and tara tree fruit extracts that create an “invisible glove effect” to protect skin; and super-moisturizing and olive oil squalane and hyaluronic acid.

Summary is a super-simple, superflower-powered beauty brand by some really talented people I know. They are a bit quiet about their identities, which I totally respect, but let me just say - they know their beauty stuff! Now the brand has a selection of active body essentials, but their first hero product was this very special natural purple deodorant.

Doesn’t this remind you of those glue sticks from school that go clear after you swipe them? Well, same deal here. It does go on totally clear! I’m not a big anti-perspirant deo user, so I really only use simple, natural deodorants and I’m ok with not being dry-as-a-bone if I’m really working out or whatever, because the ONLY way you can achieve that is with a chemical anti-perspirant deo or like, Botox. Both of these are fine choices if you need or want them.

But this natural deo works really well for me. How? The purple is Butterfly Pea Flower, which is an antioxidant; Witch Hazel Water helps reduce bacteria and is also great for skin after shaving; Bamboo Powder absorbs sweat and odor; and White Willow Bark Extract is calming. The scent is 100% natural fragrance with lemon, ginger & bergamot, which is so pretty and clean smelling!

Born in South Africa in 2014, Skin Creamery is a real OG of slow skincare. Organic, vegan and always without soaps, alcohols, synthetic fragrances and parabens, the products are as pure as they are elegant.

I first was intrigued by the line because of the oil-milk cleanser, with its gorgeous melted butter texture and my overall love for an oil-based cleanser ... but if this is immediately turning you off because you like a more squeaky-clean cleanse or are oily or acne-prone, consider this dynamic duo:

So if you start with the silky oil formula of the Oil-Milk Facial Cleanser, it will deep cleanse and rebalance your skin (and eye area/lashes, even removing waterproof mascara) with sesame oil, baobab and melon seed. It smells incredibly fresh and clean, like rosemary and rinses to a soft, smooth finish.

But if you want to boost it and exfoliate as well, just add a dash of the beautiful Deep Cleansing Powder, with Calcium Bentonite and Buchu (an indigenous South African anti-bacterial herb), which makes the oil-milk into a softly scrubby paste. You can actually make a larger palmful of paste and use it the same way you would use a clay mask, as the calcium bentonite absorbs oil and deeply detoxes your pores.

These two slow skin dance partners are an amazing pair, especially if you’ve always been dubious about oil cleansers for oily/acne-prone skin.

I’m actually sad to be writing this post because it means my jar of this insanely amazing balm is almost out. I’m not gonna lie, it is not cheap, but I know I have to buy it again because it’s truly special and I’m very picky about moisturizers. This stuff, to me, is a La Mer-level, cult-worthy story.

Also, if you’ve heard about the “slugging” trend (what a gross name) of slathering Vaseline over your skincare at night to seal it in, I would highly recommend NOT doing that but instead doing this, for reasons that will become evident.

RecoveryX was created by a University of Cambridge doctor with the goal of aiding healing, for example after laser treatment. Healing requires MOISTURE and OXYGEN, and though things like vaseline can feel super smoothing, they don’t allow for those conditions. Using silica, a natural ingredient that has been used to promote the body’s healing cycle for decades, Dermafacs created a formula that constantly attracts moisture while allowing oxygen flow.

It’s hard to make a new toothpaste. We Americans especially are very stuck in our ways when it comes to oral care. If it doesn’t foam up and taste like mint, it must not be for cleaning our mouths … that’s how ingrained and habitual the sensations of this everyday ritual are for us. But what if we took this essential habit and shifted it?

Ojook founder and former Glossier executive Youn Chang was driven to reinvent this simple daily task as a meditative moment for holistic wellness. And before you roll your eyes, think about this: your mouth is deeply linked to your overall physical and mental health, and your brushing ritual is literally your first moment of aromatherapy in the morning.

I know the first sign of stress and/or my diet slipping into the land of junk is those little painful taste bud flare ups. I immediately know that my system is out of balance when my mouth feels off, and this often stems from eating too much sugar which throws off the microbiome.

As well, the primary flouride replacement in Asia is nano-hydroxyapatite, which remineralizes teeth from the inside. The paste contains a few very unique natural holistic “medicines:” 9x-baked bamboo salt, a wellness ingredient that is highly alkaline, thus rebalancing your mouth’s microbiome; and pine tree oil, an anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory agent that inhibits the build up of plaque while also reducing pain (so it’s literally a feel-good oil).

It definitely tastes and feels different - cleaner, and a little salty, like brushing your teeth with ocean-y water in a forest! For some reason, the slightly salty and pine taste does make my mouth feel truly refreshed and somehow neutralized, versus the typical sweet minty toothpaste. It does have natural peppermint oil so it’s not completely unfamiliar, but the pine aspect is really different and feels extremely refreshing - though it took me a little getting used to. I also cannot recommend enough using a sonic toothbrush (I have this one which was only $40) because it allows you to use a different format toothpaste like this, while still getting that scrubby clean, smooth-tooth feeling I know we all love.

The packaging is completely sustainable (I love the aluminum tube), and looks beautiful, so it really is an upgrade to your daily routine.

The literal love child of couple Kim + Hein, Amsterdam-based Bloomeffects was created when a skincare-obsessed gal met a fourth generation Royal Tulip farmer and moved to the Netherlands. Cute! The two put their heads together and developed a luxury line founded on the benefits of a unique tulip skincare complex, with each formula offering a super-unique experience (textures like woah!) and stunningly beautiful packaging linking to the extraordinary heritage of the blooms.

Two stand-out beauties are the Royal Tulip Nectar - which some say is a more natural version of La Mer. The formula is a like a rich honey (described as an ointment to serum) and deeply moisturizing with anti-aging benefits and zero bad stuff.

My absolute love, though, is the Royal Tulip Cleansing Jelly. A gel to milk formula that smells incredible, it easily removes eye makeup and other junk of the day, without stripping your skin. I pretty much only use a cleansing oil in winter, and this is a great version if you don’t love the feel of an oil or just want something soothing feeling.

The best part is this guys come with a gorgeous little spoon to dole out their deliciousness! The entire package and experience makes them an amazing gift, too.

I became completely besotted with British entrepreneur Millie Goodwin’s glittery color brand With Love Cosmetics via Instagram. These hand-blended, high quality vegan and cruelty free palettes and pans are stunningly pigmented and fun to play with. I love that you can design your own palette so easily online … this concept is the cutest!

The tonal palettes (like The Pink One; The Neutral One) are great basics, but the individual glitters are probably the coolest. The color range is insane, including tons of iridescent/holo shades.

If you’ve been reading, you know I use CBD in my morning “wellness” routine. I absolutely devoured this Tarot Vibrance tincture for the past month as my first step every am. This fun brand Hiki was created by a brand incubator called arfa Collective, with the goal of integrating the needs of a wide range of humans. I’m always intrigued by projects like this because they ideally should offer something truly differentiated, innovative and thoughtful versus simply commercially viable.

The focus of Hiki is on the reality of sweat, which happens to us all, and all over ourselves. The line is vegan, cruelty-free, gender-free, and covers your whole bod - underarms, feet, thighs, back and boobs.

This is not the most profound comment — but I just love how sporty the line looks. It makes you want to get out there and do something sweaty and soul-cleansingly challenging for your bod. I think it’s cool that they offer a fragrance-free antiperspirant (this has aluminum, the FDA-regulated active that blocks your sweat), as well as bunch of natural, aluminum-free deodorants in a range of chill scents and even a cute travel size. Usually brands feel they have to pick a side of that argument; but honestly sometimes you want a real sweat blocker from a brand you like, and that’s your prerogative.

The anti-chafe stick and talc-free body powder are things I really wish I had for some summer travels (remember those?) when I was pounding the pavement and could not stop thinking about and feeling the amount of sweat in random places. Same with riding horses in the summer - just saying, when you sweat on your leather saddle it is not a great look/feel. Not to mention car trips? The list goes on.

And lastly, the Body Wipes and Hand Wipes have become essentials to me. They’re individually packed which - though it is not as minimal - I prefer vs. bulk packs because I store my wipes either in the car or at the barn, and those are not climate-controlled environments. A baby wipe-type pack of wipes dries out and is wasted. I use the body wipes for my face and to clean the inside of my helmet, to get rid of all bacteria before acne/smells can develop.

The brand’s imagery is inclusive and gorgeous which makes the whole thing even more uplifting and fun. There are some really cute starter kits that offer a value and are a fun gift for any one you know that sweats (that’s pretty much everyone you know).

Weird new word / amazing scent alert … A mistpouffer is an unexplained natural sound that sounds like a sonic boom. It happens over large lakes or rivers in the fog. There have been many recorded instances of this phenomenon but no one knows what the heck it is.

Obviously an indie perfumer felt the need to capture this concept in a scent - because that’s what indie perfumery is all about - and Tomas Hempel of Swedish fragrance maker Stora Skuggan has done just that with this insanely captivating scent. The packaging, like all of his work, is also as beautiful as the perfume.

I bought this for work reference and I’ve had to pay for it out of pocket because I decided not just to keep it but to douse myself in it every night before bed. I’ve never smelled something that combines a sexy, cologne vibe with a gourmand, yummy base in such a unique way.

It smells like walking through wet rain in a fir forest, then finding yourself inside a warm room with delicious smokey fire where you go under a cool duvet and snuggle with something/one sweet. The composition includes bergamot and immortelle (which is a very green, fresh but rich daisy-like scent); with a heart of fig leaf pine and ozone (smells like before a thunderstorm); and a base of smoke vetiver (a dusty, sexy grass) and malt sugar which gives the fragrance it’s yummy quality.

This is such a special, collectible fragrance that will definitely stay in my core collection.

Perhaps appropriately, I don’t have many words to express how much I love this minimalist Korean brand RBOW that I discovered on Pinterest. I’m surprised it’s even real - I really thought it was going to be one of those pins that was a student dream project from design school.

Alas, these stunningly simple selfcare products exist and are as good as they look. The brand is centered around the idea that art brings a different kind of beauty and creativity into your rituals of skin and body care. And I guess it’s true, because these are all I want on my vanity <3

Every piece of packaging is thoughtfully designed in a fresh way, and the package came with a few beautiful posters I have on my mood board. The products themselves are excellent quality, but very simple, with a pure, genderless scent that’s fresh but light.

As far as I can tell, you can’t buy this brand in the US yet, but the Korean shop will ship worldwide - and it’s worth it!

If your work from home routine includes a desk/Zoom life situation and you haven’t spent a moment making a lil pile of beauty must-haves next to your mouse, are you really living [surviving] in 2020?

Keeping my skin sane and my focus on point has been key during this deskside lockdown, and there are a few rituals I’m loving - the main one being MISTING my face like a diva in between video calls. There’s nothing more refreshing to your spirit and complexion than a great smelling, cooling spritz of the good stuff. In my case, it’s been the aptly named RITUEL Sacred Rose Mist.

This pure organic rose water is made from heirloom roses that are grown in Bulgaria (the rose center of the world. It has the beautiful earthy smell I associate with pure rose oil (vs. the more perfume-y rose smell of lesser sprays). As you guys have seen even on this blog, there is no shortage of CBD out there. From my experience and research, there is little doubt that high quality full spectrum CBD, used regularly, does help regulate your mood and minimize symptoms of anxiety, as well as diminish chronic pain. For me, CBD is like the most mild, subtle Xanax combined with 3 Advils. I would never take Xanax regularly (in fact I’ve only taken it like 3 times in my life - it is habit-forming and overall too strong for me) and, while the anti-inflammatory pain relief of Advil is amazing and real - I wouldn’t take 3 a day of those either because it’s hard on your stomach and liver.

I love a good clarifying toner as much as the next human, but something about applying a liquid on a pad that swipes across your skin and then dries … seems very parching in the Fall/Winter months.

I know first hand how incredibly annoying and depressing it is to have adult acne. My skin was totally fine in high school and only went bonkers for the following … 2 decades. It’s mostly fine now, which is the major benefit of ye olde age, but I still have weird breakouts along my jawline and generally need to keep things in check.

Balmlabs is dermatologist-designed for adult acne-prone skin - which just cannot be bombarded with the acne fighters that work on oilier teen skin. With a guarantee of clearer skin in 4 weeks, 98% 5 star reviews, and natural ingredients including plant derived AHAs, CBD, niacinamide and squalane (2 of my favorites for balancing) … I was really excited to try this system. The product claims are obviously impressive, but moreover, I just wanted to simply and use the same 3 products every day. It’s so easy to get away from that, and then you don’t even know what is helping or hurting your skin!

The 3 step system is a great way to get into the program. It starts with a gentle self-foaming cleanser that contains AHAs to cleanse, gently exfoliate and brighten. The Serum Hydrator was my choice for morning, because it’s super thin and light. It adds hydration while improving the appearance of aging (fine lines etc.) and minimizing redness and irritation with anti-inflammatory CBD. At night I did the Power Elixir on trouble areas like my jawline - it’s a liquid exfoliant that also hydrates, and you can use it under the Hydrator.

After a month on this system I definitely see a difference - my overall skintone is way more even and I haven’t had a real breakout… definitely had a few blemishes here and there but they seem to go away more quickly. I also have very red skin when it’s in the healing phase, kind of a hyperpigmentation issue which with my pale skintone reads as red, and I haven’t seen much of that at all.

It’s definitely an investment at $149 for the 3 items (a $179 value), but I like it because the products are designed to work together and streamline your routine while both fighting acne and other signs of aging (hyperpigmentation, fine lines etc.) - so it focuses your efforts and saves you from being distracted by other random skincare that might not really help you - and might even exacerbate - your adult acne journey.
