It’s deeper than that: John believes in him. More fiercely than any other human being. Sees in Sherlock so much good and brilliance and light. And to see the man he loves submit himself to such mistreatment, and punishment, it *hurts*. It hurts him that Sherlock feels he needs the drugs, it hurts him that Sherlock sees himself and his mind as a freight train, something to subdue and treat as a machine, and abuse, and nothing more. He is not just worried… He is disappointed, he is hurt, he wants to change it, but fears he is not enough, that he can’t, that he can’t even reach him… Helplessly seeing your loved one grappling with self-hatred and destruction like this (when he is not even realising that it is self-hatred)… It does things to you.

And don’t forget that John knows what self-hatred is. Oh he knows too well. From the cane to the self-deprecating comments, to the cynicism to giving up (and marrying someone he does not love), to “why is everything always my fault?!”… And seeing Sherlock suffer from the same thing… Oh my…

Well, if you’re not sick of this wip yet (I’m surprisingly not! Normally I get bored about halfway through a project so I’ll roll with this unusual enthusiasm!) here’s another process video. And if you are getting tired of seeing these updates, sorry! This is my main embroidery focus for this coming year and I don’t think I’ll be embroidering much else.

I’m using a single strand of DMC 01-04 and a variety of machine threads for this hand embroidered portrait.
