New Website

We are excited to announce the launch of our new website:

Also, over the next couple of months we will be adding more of our recently completed projects and a couple of hard-to-pin-a-time-down-to-photograph staff members. Another Year and a New Studio!

The team at Cumulus Studio have had a particularly exciting end to 2015 - we marked our 4th anniversary in November, our new Melbourne studio is now up and running (led by the fantastic Keith Westbrook) and last week we celebrated the opening of Brown Brothers' Devil's Corner Cellar Door.

‪Update from Site

#‎Instagram‬ ‪#‎Repost‬ from Devil's Corner Cellar Door (@devilscornerwine) Its great to see a client excited about their project and literally trying the design on for size. The project is currently being built by Anstie Construction so you won't need to visualise it for too much longer with the project due to be finished prior to Christmas.

Domain House

We recently released the book Domain House (pictured above) as part of the 125 Year Celebrations for the University of Tasmania. 

As architects for the Conservation of Domain House (in collaboration with Peter Freeman and Paul Johnston) we proposed an update to the Conservation Management Plan for the building to guide the heritage works - a task which later grew into this beautiful book.  A soft cover version of the book will be available for sale online from the University through their website:

Bento Box - Moonah / Hobart

We have been working with Bento Box on a number of their restaurant / cafe / takeaway spaces throughout Tasmania.  This selection of photos are from the fitout of the Moohan and Hobart spaces and are designed to be inline with the company’s new branding.

Cumulus Studio devils are off to Beijing!

Scotch Oakburn students are currently visiting China at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping after meeting with him in Tasmania late last year. 

Cumulus Studio are proud to have designed the Tasmanian Devils that will be presented as gifts by the students to their new friends in China.

The Devils are produced in Tasmania using sustainably sourced Tasmanian Golden Sassafras and Blackwood timber veneers.

We hope that the students have a fantastic time in China and to look forward to seeing the good friendship between China and Tasmania continue into the future.

Pumphouse Point

A selection of images from the recently completed Pumphouse Point.  

"The project involved the adaptive reuse of Pumphouse Point into a wilderness retreat.  The existing heritage listed, art-deco style buildings - ‘The Pumphouse’ and ‘The Shorehouse’ - were constructed in the 1940s as part of Tasmania’s hydro electric scheme and are positioned within the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.  The two buildings had been unused for over twenty years before works began. Eighteen new guest suites, communal lounge areas and a shared dining area have been inserted within the existing off-form concrete building envelopes.  From inception we envisaged that the Pumphouse Point redevelopment should encapsulate rugged simplicity and unrefined comfort.  Through its design the new redevelopment attempts to build on the sense of arrival and place inherent in the unique location whilst alluding to the site’s history through material selection and construction detailing. In keeping with best heritage practice and the values of the World Heritage Area in which it is located, the design is focused on environmental stewardship, sustainability and minimal site impact."

Cumulus Studio are a design-focused architecture studio based in Tasmania with offices in Launceston and Hobart .

We are looking for an experienced Graduate of Architecture to work in our Hobart studio. The ideal candidate will have experience in a design office (similar to our own), be fluent with ArchiCad, enjoy working as part of a team and, most importantly, live & breathe Architecture.

Ratho Farm

Some recent photos from Ratho Farm in Bothwell, Tasmania.  This was a very early project in the office and involved the conversion of a number of existing farm buildings into guest accommodation.  Our work consisted of assisting with setting the stylistic approach (look and feel) for the project and assisting with the statutory approvals.  

A simple palette was employed to evoke a unassumingly but elegant rustic country lifestyle.  Fabric from the original buildings was maintained and featured as much as possible.

Tasmanian Devils @ Saffire

Saffire has recently become one of the key partners with the Save the Tasmanian Devil Program in the Menzies Institute for Medical Research's quest to find a vaccine for Tasmanian Devil Facial Tumour Disease.  As part of their involvement in the program, the resort has brought a number of Tasmanian Devils to the site and housed them in an open-range devil enclosure.

Our role was to create a small viewing shelter where guests can learn about the devil program and observe them in their natural habitat.  Designed to be in keeping with the rest of the resort, the viewing enclosure presents a large horizontal picture window, which nestles into the landscape placing guests at eye height with the devils.

Pumphouse Point Website Live

The Pumphouse Point website is now up and running, and with it we have released some visualisation of the suites.  

Bookings are being taken from 1st of November for January 2015... we are a little bit biased but can't wait to stay there!!
