Meet Patria, Minerva, or María Teresa Mirabal – Dominican sisters who courageously opposed the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo in the 1950s. The three sisters, along with their husbands, participated in constant underground political actions against Trujillo’s regime, and came to be regarded as symbols of resistance and feminist icons known as the “Butterflies”. Even multiple stints in prison weren’t enough to stop their activism. When Trujillo’s government assassinated the sisters in 1960, it sparked a massive public outrage, which was among the catalysts leading to Trujillo’s own assassination just six months later. Now the Mirabal sisters are commemorated every November 25th by the United Nations, which declared an International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women in their honor.

I would have to go up against people (usually guys) twice my size and could easily overpower me, but these tricks DO work and they don’t require a lot of strength.

In 1999, four NY police officers shot 41 times at the 23-year-old Guinean immigrant. Just before he died, Diallo had started taking steps toward become a professional.

“He had saved $9,000,” Diallo says. “The last time we spoke on the phone, he said to me, ‘Mom, I’m going to college.’“

Cuba marks global day against homophobia, transphobia

Hundreds of people took part in a march in Matanzas, Cuba, on Tuesday that marked the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia.

Mariela Castro, daughter of Cuban President Raúl Castro who directs the country’s National Center for Sexual Education, and Wilfredo Labiosa, an American LGBT rights advocate who lives in Puerto Rico, were among those who took part in the march that began near Matanzas’ waterfront and ended in Parque de la Libertad in the center of the city. Tico Almeida, the Cuban American president of Freedom to Work who has family in Matanzas, also participated with some of his relatives.

March participants carried large Cuban and rainbow flags, banners in support of Mariela Castro and handwritten signs in support of LGBT-specific issues and against the U.S. embargo against Cuba as they slowly made their way to Parque de la Libertad. They also chanted “socialism yes, homophobia no” and other slogans that included “down with homophobia” and “down with transphobia.”

Mariela Castro said to those who gathered in Parque de la Libertad after the march that all forms of discrimination “against exploited human beings are the same.”

She highlighted efforts to combat homophobia and transphobia on the Communist island before leading the crowd in a chant of “long live the (Cuban) revolution.” Mariela Castro was holding a sign that read, “I am included! No to the U.S. embargo!” as she spoke.

Many of those who took part in the march were also holding the same signs against the U.S. embargo.

Frank Zamora, a 40-year-old gay man from Matanzas, carried a hand-written poster that read “revolution and socialism is diversity” while holding a small rainbow flag. He told the Washington Blade before the march began that it was important for him to take part “to demonstrate to those people who don’t accept social diversity for one reason or another that we are all the same.”

“We have the same rights,” said Zamora. “The Cuban constitution pertains to all of us.”

A nonprofit group is taking a novel approach to helping the homeless in San Francisco with a new bus that allows them to take a shower.

The former public transit bus has been outfitted with two full private bathrooms and offers hot showers, clean toilets, shampoo, soap and towels free of charge. The founder of the nonprofit Lava Mae mobile shower bus (Doniece Sandoval) said she wanted to return a sense of dignity to those living on the streets.

These riots didn't destroy Baltimore. You did. You did with your fancy degrees and need to make Baltimore another cookie cutter city. Your need to promote Baltimore as city on the brink of some pseudo evolution that benefits your idea of what life should be. You ruined Baltimore by taking away manufacturing jobs. You ruined Baltimore by polluting our Chesapeake Bay, and slowly crippling our fishing industries. You ruined Baltimore by saying, "Cheaper rent, bigger places, and still can work in DC!" And how did you get those cheap places? By forcing people out of work, boarding up neighbourhoods, and then inviting outsiders from ivies in and offering people’s homes and memories for dirt cheap. You ruined Baltimore by mocking our working class history and making fun of Hon culture, distorting it into just a costume party and a reason to take pictures and share on Facebook. These folks out here in these streets have been marginalised beyond belief; forced to see the only city they've ever known slowly push them to the fringe of existence. These people in the streets, fighting for our fellow Baltimorean, are the real Baltimore. So excuse me if I'm just fine with some flipped over cars and a ruined CVS. Baltimore has been dying a slow death all of my life, but y'all were too busy chit chatting about the Wire to even notice. Y'all were too busy building community gardens everywhere except communities that needed them and creating jobs for transplants. 

We're tired man. We're fucking tired. We ain’t the ones who destroyed Baltimore.
