Practical Magic Tech: Spellcasting Altars (101)

This post is part of a series of animistic, spirit-oriented spellcasting for beginners. Go to the masterpost to see them all.

This is a 101 theory post. Go to the masterpost to find actionable steps for altar building and consecration.

Loosely defined (remember, we aren't trying to label everyone, we just want to clear the weeds in our corner of the magical universe), an altar is a sacred space used to facilitate two-way communication and movement with the unseen worlds.

Altars are often built to house and honor gods and spirits. There is a fairly significant difference between someone building an altar or shrine to honor their god(s), and a spellcasting altar for witchcraft.

Our goal with a spellcasting altar is not really to honor anything. We can build a separate altar or shrine to honor a god if we would like to do so.

Instead, for the purposes of this series, a spellcasting altar is:

A hardwired connection to the otherworld,

Which makes gathering metaphysical energy easier, and

Drawing power out of the ethereal and grounding it into physical objects is easier, which means

Successful manifestation is easier.

Delivering targeted spells is easier.

Also, it's beacon that naturally accumulates and collects spiritual power (this is why people can put things on their altars to automatically charge them).

And it's powerful method of classical conditioning.

Classical Conditioning: It's Hella Useful

If you use a spellcasting altar for most of your spellwork, after a little while just being in its presence is going to click you into a magical headspace.

Yes, spellcasting altars are imbued with actual magical power and have very useful metaphysical properties. But their utility extends beyond the metaphysical.

Also they're a great place to store all your spellcasting stuff.

(By the way: try using a specific stimulus, such as an earthy grounding scent or wearing a headband, every time you practice grounding, centering, and exiting a magical headspace. It's a really really helpful tool)

Does it need to be a physical altar?

No. A physical altar is only one piece of spellcasting "tech". If that tech is not viable for you, you have many other techs to draw upon.

Digital altars can also hold metaphysical energy. True magic can be done through web pages. Ask anyone who's been in an occult server on the rough side of the web.

All that being said, you don't necessarily need any altar. They're a handy tool but no one tool is everything.

Let your path serve you, not the other way around.

What about size? What about shoebox or mint tin altars?

Oh boy, get ready for my favorite hill to die on!:

Spellcasting altars are nothing more than container spells.

In a jar spell you take, idk, some rosemary for sleep protection, some iron nails against nightmares, and some lavender for sweet dreams. You put them all together in a jar and consecrate them to your intent and those independent components come together to create something greater than the sum of their parts in order to effect magical change.

In a spellcasting altar, maybe you take a candle for connection to the otherworld, a crystal to accumulate energies, and little colorful stones to represent the Western buildingblock elements (fire, earth, air, water). You put them all together on a specially marked flat surface and consecrate them to your intent and those independent components come together to create something greater than the sum of their parts in order to effect magical change.

When you cast a container spell, you are linking up a variety of powers to work together in the long term. And nobody is out there telling you to get a gallon-sized glass jar. In fact it's popular to use the teeniest little jars possible.

Get yourself a mint tin if that's what you prefer. Hell, a matchbook with a sigil drawn inside. Make your altar into a notebook or a tumblr blog. All that is necessary is that you find it to be useful; that it gives you more back than what it takes to use it.

But I do have one thing to say in support of the classic on a shelf/flat surface altar: They're kind of like hypersigils, and that's really handy

What if you made a container spell for general prosperity, and then put that container spell inside a bigger container spell for general empowerment of everything placed inside of it?

That's what a spellcasting altar is!

It's a big cauldron of power designed to help you manifest your desires and link power to objects in the way that you choose. Start adding other finished spells back into it, and it's like a magical combo move that multiplies power and makes it easier for you to manage everything there.

Too much volatility and movement in your financial life? Take some of the prosperity stuff off of your altar - and just like that, the magic in your life has shifted.

All your spells are lagging and there's not much motion? Light a spicy, fiery candle on your altar to give everything there a tangy boost.

Feeling irritated by someone? Print out a picture of them and place it on your altar, facing away from you. No spellcasting, chanting, or ritual required - an act of magic was done because an action was taken in a magical place designed to manifest every intent you put within it.

The real benefit of spellcasting altars is that they do a lot of the heavy lifting for you.

You're probably not interested in practical magic because your life is great and you already have enough time, energy, interest, or ability to manage everything in a mundane way agreed upon by Society.

I actually think there's a pretty good chance that you're interested in practical magic because there's not enough of you to go around to deal with things in a mundane way.

Magic is real, and real things tend to take real work.

So how is it helpful to turn to a new methodology of managing your life, when it takes just as much time and energy as you were spending before?

Spellcasting altars, even small ones, even digital ones, help us out. They automatically collect power for us to use later on, so we don't have to drink our precious Get Stuff Done juice. They house doors to the otherworld you can just open and close, instead of having to create the door every time you need it. They help us automatically get into the spellcasting mindset through a hardwire connection to the otherworld and the magic of classical conditioning.

Spellcasting altars do specific things and fill specific needs. Therefore, they're not going to be necessary or even useful for everybody. Try them out and see if they're useful for you. If so; a tool has been added to your toolbox. If not; you have considered and discounted something unhelpful, and now you can move on to better things.

Raising Power: An Intro Into Powering Your Spells

I'm having a fun time thinking of a new way to say the same disclaimer for what is now my 13th post in this series: I'm attempting to present one way of working with practical magic. This way is not universal. It's not even particularly helpful for many. If you are already pleased with your magical success, I am not trying to invalidate you by telling you to start doing stuff in a much more formal, ritualistic way. Rather, this series is for people who aren't happy with where they're at and want to try new stuff to troubleshoot their success.

I'm worried that in most of this post my tone is a little more "this is definitely the right way to do things" than my other posts in this series. While I always strive to state and restate that this is really only one way of doing magic, sadly I can't afford to hire a copy editor. Just please be aware that for the whole post I really only am talking about the style of spellcraft described in the overall series.

This post is I think the longest out of any of them, almost all of it is under the cut :)

Yes. Let's get to it.

Stuff needs power to go.

Car needs gas. Lightbulb needs electricity. Spell needs energy.

If you have a car without gas, you'll still have a car. The lights might even turn on and the engine will try to turn over - it's just not going to go, you know?

I have a lightbulb in the lamp. I still have it; it's just not doing anything. If I turn on the flow of electricity, it's going to do it's job - until I turn the flow off again (or it burns out; it happens).

I very commonly see spells that explain how to set up a magical machine, but fail to explain how to actually power it.

"Just leave it in the sun!"

If the sun automatically charged everything in its light with magical power, why aren't my lawn ornaments incredibly powerful sources of magical energy?

"Leave it in the sun with intent!"

Yes, now we're getting somewhere! But this is charging or recharging outside of actual spellwork - taking something out into the sunlight once you're done with a spell really isn't the same thing as raising and directing energy during the course of a spell.

And, okay, once again, this is just my belief system that I believe in because it's how stuff works for me:

But if no energy was raised during the actual creation of the enchantment, how do you know that the spell actually exists? I mean an enchantment has to exist before you can charge it, according to my linear understanding of time.

"All you need to do is speak or think your intent, and your enchantment is complete."

Well, that's true. I have been practicing magic for a little while now, and I know how to access my personal power, and raise and direct it only through my words. This is a fair bit more tiring for me because it directly drains my personal energy into the spell's battery, so to speak.

But in order for this process to be really successful, I still have to access and raise my personal power.

Consider the differences in these two approaches:

I hold a rose quartz ring and say, "this ring glamours me to look beautiful," with the same state of mind as ordering from Taco Bell. I say it with a ton of intent - I mean I really mean what I say - and that's that.

I hold a rose quartz ring and drop into my magical state of mind that connects me to my personal power. I scoop a ladle of golden energy out of myself, and pour it through the crystalized intent of my words - "this ring glamours me to look beautiful." My words are a hollow structure with specific form, and as I speak them I pour the nectar of my power into them, filling them up as molten metal fills a mold. My intent had structure, but now it is set, permanently - my power has made my words real; my words have given structure to my power. And that's that.

When I do the former, there is still some enchantment. I truly believe that words spoken by humans have incredible power. Truly, just by speaking "this ring glamours me," I have already done an act of magic. It is not psychological - as my word, so shall it be. Not, as my power.

Yet I find that when words are spoken without being filled with power, they are like molds made of sand. Yes, there is structure there for now - yes, you can fill it with power. But if you are not careful, and do not quickly empower the enchantment, the sand will crumble under the pressure of astral winds, and little of the original will be left.

But I kind of feel that raising a lot of power during the initial casting is way more important than raising little/no power and just charging it later.

Let's switch metaphors away from molten metal and sandy molds.

Let’s imagine something a lot more mystical.

Suppose your intent is pencil drawing. During your act of magic, you are literally raising your two-dimensional drawing off the paper and turning it into a living, animated, three-dimensional form.

Once the spell is done, the three-dimensional form is set. Yes, you can go back to your spellspace and modify it later, but unless you do that, the spell is what it is.

The amount of power you raise during the initial casting of the spell is how much of your two-dimensional drawing actually gets converted into its animated, 3D form.

Let's say I cast a spell for *spins wheel*... opening doorways to learn more about witchcraft. My pencil drawing might be books about witchcraft and a teacher willing to mentor me.

If I raise only a little power, maybe only the books pop out of the page and become real. They're small and don't take much energy to raise up, after all. If that's all the power I put in the spell, that's what the spell is going to do for me - it's going to bring interesting and helpful books to my attention. When I recharge the spell later on, it's still just an "interesting books, come hither!" spell. Recharging is not the same as going back to reforge and expand the capacity of the spell.

If I raise a little more power, maybe the head and shoulders of the teacher pop up along with the books. Now, I will not only get lots of books coming my way, but also knowledgeable people start talking to me to give me tips. If I recharge the spell, it's still going to be a "interesting books and helpful advice" spell. Because what the spell is now, and what it does when I recharge it, was set during the initial casting.

What about the initial intent? The initial intent doesn't matter once you actually create something and set it loose.

The initial intent will influence the spell during it's creation.

But if you lacked the resources, energy, etc., to call that intent fully into being during the initial casting, then it's like drawing up the plans for a Ferrari, only having the energy to build the frame, and asking why the battery isn't powering the interior lights. There are no interior lights. There is no interior. You never built it. Putting gas into an engine on a frame can't power features that you never had the energy to build.

I hear you barking big dog - What about people who are really bad at raising energy and have difficulty casting huge whopper spells?

This is why I'm a huge advocate of limited, focused spell intents.

Guess who can't pull of amazing feats of expansive power and build a Ferrari all in one setting?

Remember our spell intent to "open doorways to learn more about witchcraft"? And how some of that energy went to pulling in books, and only after that, the rest of the energy started going towards a teacher?

Well as it turned out, what I really wanted was the teacher. I just had a spell focus too general, and some of that energy went to other places.

If I recast the spell to only say, "connect me with a teacher who will help me improve my craft," the books aren't sucking up my energy any more. And yeah, maybe I can't manifest the whole teacher in a perfect way, but I can at least this manifestation is going way further. At the very least I can pull him out of the page down to like, his knees.

You can also do stuff like, cast one spell to banish blockages, so that your "addition" spell cast next week (when you've had a chance to recharge a bit) has way less resistance, so that energy goes even further.

Or, you can basically keep spells "under construction" (ideally on altar, but we all do what we gotta do) for an extended period of time, returning to work on it and slowly empower it for a period of time before sealing it ("so mote it be," etc.).

And, what the whole point of this whole dang series is about - you can just pay spirits and powers to donate their energy to fill up your spell and really make it pop off the page.

How do you access your personal energy, or tap into external power sources?

Okay! Yes! THIS IS WHAT ALL THOSE SUPER IRRITATING PSYCHIC/MAGICAL EXERCISES ARE FOR!

Have you ever seen someone say, "how can I get started with spells?" and someone else is like "why not try meditating and making energy balls?"

And you were like "how? How does that help? What does that have to do with anything??"

As it turns out, they really help a lot! There's just usually a huge disconnect between explaining techniques that teach accessing and manipulating power, and spellcasting.

So let's plug 'em in together :)

Now y'all might be a bit frustrated because this post is not the place to step out detailed descriptions of various exercises. I'm just going to put some general categories here to provide search terms and such.

Breathing, meditation, visualizing, and altered states of consciousness

Accessing your personal power is something you're going to have to figure out for yourself. Generally, most people find success through breathing techniques, meditative exercises, or any method which provides an altered state of consciousness (ASC).

Entering into an ASC on its own is not likely to automatically connect you with your personal power.

Rather, it can help give you the space to explore yourself, outside of everyday concerns, so you can find the power within.

Visualization is therefore often used to guide yourself through altered states until you find what you're looking for.

Examples include using breathing techniques to reach ASC, then using visualization to develop a connection to your inner power. For example, if I continuously use a visualization that my inner power is located at a very specific lake in my mindscape, that lake will eventually legitimately become connected to my inner source of power.

You could also pathwork to your source of inner power, or use ASC to speak to guiding spirits who explain to you how to access it.

You can experiment with energy body techniques to see if your personal energy is primarily located at a certain point (many people store their energy in their spines, hearts, or solar plexus, for example).

You can also get yourself very worked up into a certain emotional state and drain out that emotional energy to power a spell (useful if you want to be emotionally drained).

I found my inner source of power by fucking around until I figured it out. One day I was trying to send messages out to spirits, but I could intuitively tell they didn't work. Then I figured out if I visualized my inner voice as a certain color, it suddenly... just started working. That was the first building block. Later on, I "spoke" words not from my throat, but from a different place within. That worked even better. Just by a process of experimentation, I discovered how to speak with power, and that led me back to my source of power.

Although practice to reach ASC and/or discovering how to tap your inner power may be frustrating at first, and be time-consuming each time you do it, that practice stacks up. I can slide in and out of my magical awareness now very quickly, not because I am a talented natural witch (HAH), but because I've spend such a long time practicing that it's become easy for me.

Straight up energy work exercises

Practice taking energy from one thing and using it to power another thing, like how this post describes.

Practice energy exercises where you root into the ground and draw power up into yourself.

Practice energy exercises where you call your excess energy back from wherever you left it and into your body.

Practice those elemental energy balls!

Now I want to make a wee note here. I don't practice "energy work" when I cast spells. When I cast a spell I do it Ye Olde Wytche style, with candles and herbs and chanting and stuff. I do not sit down and specifically visualize and direct balls or tendrils of energy myself as one does with energy work techniques. However, because I have a background in energy work, I know how it feels when energy is moving. I can feel the difference between when I'm working with energy, or working with nothing. Because I've sat down and made energy tethers between lots of things, I know what it feels like when an object is properly tied to an energy source that powers it.

You don't need to specifically do energy work to cast spells. But if you are struggling to understand what it feels like to raise, manipulate, and program energy, then energy workers have you covered! They have like a million exercises that's just practice, practice, practice of working with energy.

Just ask. That's what this whole series is about.

Here's a fucked up lil trick that's basically cheating, it's so goddamn easy. It's so wild. You don't have to feel energies or enter ASC or tap into your personal power or any of that shit. It's the best. It goes like this:

*Gather some kitchen basil in a little dish* *Gentle incense cleansing going on* *Wash face and hands, prepare to meet important, special guest.* *Hold basil dish.*

"Basil, hi. My name is Fool Chicken. I've been reading about you and I've been told you're a really powerful, special plant with a lot of uses. I'm actually quite fucked in the finance department lately, if you know what I mean. There's no way I can pay all my bills this month and I need, need, need my phone for work. I'm asking you to please help me out and donate your energy to this money candle I'm making. I know such a spell would be trivial for you to accomplish; I've heard you can make mountains move if you choose to do so. I'm therefore asking you now to apply your great powers to my purpose, that my bills are taken care of this month, or at the very least my phone. As upfront payment to you, I'm dedicating this incense to you, and this glass of water. And once this spell has become manifest I will bring you whatever offering I am able to afford. I trust that in your hands my finances are safe. Thank you."

*Sprinkles basil in a little circle around cleansed, consecrated candle* *Light candle*

All that being said, talking to spirits like this now automatically sends me to ASC. But your mileage will vary ^-^

Like for example, maybe Basil isn't your BFF right now and doesn't want to hear your life story; maybe he's not going to be keen to sort out your needs and he's only going to help if you give him a clear, direct statement of intent: "Basil, I request your power unto this intent: My bills are taken care of this month. I thank you for undertaking this operation for me." *Lights candle* "Basil, as thanks for assisting me in this spell, I have these offerings for you:..."

Or maybe, you've not got the strongest spirit voice yet, and you need a couple extra little steps like casting a circle, or opening the roads, to help you. Or maybe your spells are only really thriving when you call on Hekate ahead of time, or pray to your ancestors first.

There's a lot of troubleshooting that sometimes needs to go down. But actually stopping to either personally raise power, or invoke spiritual powers, is going to go a long, long, long ways towards powering your spells.

Powering them to such an extent that you make yourself scared about the power of witchcraft ^-^

Understanding Magic: One-Shot vs Continuous Magic

Terms, definitions, and labels are extremely powerful. They create lines and divisions. This can create blinders which prevent us from seeing the whole picture. But it's also dang useful for navigating a murky informational swamp.

I would like to provide you with a few informational labels to help you sort information into boxes for safekeeping. Do not forget, however, to discard these labels in the future once you've outgrown their use.

I find a very good way to categorize spellwork is based on their longevity and how they are expected to operate. The best way to explain this is to jump right in.

First of all, what's a spell?

For the purposes of this series of posts, a spell is a discrete pool of metaphysical power patterned to achieve a distinct goal or outcome. This combination of power and intent is meant to have a literal effect on the physical world and its inhabitants.

One-shot Spells

Like your favorite fanfic intended to be published in one part without any followups, one-shot spells are spells which are cast once, do something specific, and then that's it.

In my way of working, the major thing that makes it one-shot magic is that either:

The spell was never tied to a physical object (in the case of pure energy work or astral magic), or,

The spell was tied to a physical object (like a candle, paper sigil, or incense), but that object will be destroyed in order to release the spell, and,

The spell is intended to do something specific once and then stop.

One way to envision one-shot magic is like assigning a specific quest to a fairy knight. He gallops out of your castle and across the kingdom to achieve what you desire. When he accomplishes the task (manifests your goal), or when he runs out of his fairy bread (the energy of the spell), he disappears - whichever comes first.

Once the knight has left your castle, it's really hard to get him to change his course of action. If you realized you made a mistake sending him out, you're probably going to have to send another knight to stop him.

Also if you tell him his job and then lock him in a room he will DESTROY it trying to get out and do your bidding. This is a little more like 201 stuff but keep that in mind :)

Pros of one-shot spells:

They come in clutch when you need something specific to happen once, but you don't need it to continue happening on a regular basis. Examples include finding a job, getting Becky fired, getting a lease for an apartment you can afford, or finding the perfect pet for your lifestyle.

They are set-and-forget. Once the initial casting is complete, you do not need to go back to recharge or monitor the spell.

You can pre-cast spells and store them inside of physical vessels (again, that's the candles, incense, paper sigil, etc etc) and wait to release the magic until you're ready.

Cons of one-shot spells:

The initial spellcasting is meant to provide them with enough power to fully complete your goal. This means they can be more draining to cast, especially if you let your personal power charge them (a fix to this, however: pre-cast the spell and continuously charge the disposable vessel over time to slowly boost it).

Because the spell is not tied to any physical vessel once the casting is complete, it can be a little more difficult for beginners or those without strong psychic senses to track, monitor, or modify their spells if they choose to.

It's an ineffective way of approaching magic in your life that needs to be both ongoing and easy to manage.

Continuous Magic

As opposed to one-shot spells, continuous magic is magic which I define as being both:

Bound to a physical vessel (such as a piece of jewelry or a container), and,

Intended to provides the same effect continuously through an extended period of time.

One way to conceptualize continuous magic is like a personal assistant that stands around you at all times. The assistant constantly works to bring you the things you've asked for, or keep away things you don't like. The assistant is also open to input and suggestions, as long as they don't stray too far out of his job description.

However, your assistant will only work if they get their monthly paycheck (that's the recharging!).

Because this assistant is always around, you can put him on unpaid leave at any time or restart his employment. You don't have to send a knight to convince the assistant not to come to work that day, you can just tell the assistant that for the time being his services are no longer necessary.

Pros of continuous magic:

They are ideal when you need a magical effect to constantly work without a set end date. Examples include most protections and general prosperity spells.

Once set up, they are easy to deal with and manage. Recharging is much easier and faster than the initial casting, and often needs to only be done monthly (or less!).

If you need to pause or dismantle the effects of the spell, doing so is relatively easy, and the spell can be started up again later.

Monitoring and modifying the spell is usually a breeze.

Cons of continuous magic:

The magic radiates out of the vessel, so where the vessel is actually matters a lot. Unless you have a taglock that forwards the magic to a different person or address, it's effects will spill out around it.

Searching for, or creating, a suitable vessel is typically more of a hassle and can be more expensive than one-shot magic.

You gotta have a place to store these bad boys. Vessels can be chosen to be very small and discreet, but their density and mass is an inherent and unavoidable factor.

Sometimes you make a continuous magic vessel and forget about it, and 3 months later you're like "why is this HAPPENING" and then 18 months later you find the jar in the back of your closet and you and your brain do this GIF with yourselves:

And boom, yeah, that's it. Two categories of practical magic.

Now I know what you're asking. Are there more categories?

Twist: There's not even these categories. Remember, we must not consider these two categories to be absolute. You cannot find one-shotness or continousness in the DNA of magic.

As varied and infinite as techniques, beliefs, and intents are, there are that many categories of magic.

An astute reader may already be asking, "what about spells meant to do one thing and stop, but you don't destroy the vessel they're in? What about energy work meant to last long-term but it's never tied to anything?"

Valid questions indeed, and worthy of much consideration.

Our purposes here are to not to try and wrangle all of magic into convenient boxes; that is too grand a task for any one blog series.

Even wrangling one little field plot of magic is serious work in and of itself. Our purpose here is instead to provide foundational guidelines and suggestions for those who want to understand practical magic and get to casting it just as soon as possible.

And not even all methodologies of practical magic, either -- just the ones I'm familiar enough with to share.

Salted Honey Pie 🍯

An old fashion pie recipe that’s super simple to make and a great Ostara/Spring Dessert! I’m making one for this Easter with my family.

Honey, Eggs, Cream are all Spring Foods. Honey symbolizes sweetness and the rewards of hardwork just like the little bees that work so hard to make it! 🐝

And Salt banishes negativity and is purifying!

This dessert is perfect for getting rid of the stress or worry of Winter and welcoming any sweet rewards from your hardwork in the future this Spring!

Ingredients:

One 9 inch Pie Crust (Store bought or one of your favorite crust recipes)

½ Cup of Melted Butter

¾ Cup of White Sugar

2 Tbs of Cornmeal

¼ tsp of Salt

¾ Cup of Honey

2 Eggs + 1 Egg Yolk

½ Cup of Cream

2 tsp White Vinegar

1 tsp of Vanilla Extract

Salt Flakes for Garnish

Preheat your oven to 350. In a large bowl, mix together your dry ingredients before slowly mixing in your wet ingredients one at a time…. (I never do this and just mix it all together randomly as I go, but it’s up to you.)

Feel free to add a sigil to the base of the pie crust. This is mine -

Pour mixture into your pie crust, it will be liquid and thin; that’s okay!

Cook for 45 to 60 minutes or until the top is golden brown and it starts to bubble.(I recommend 60 minutes on the middle rack. Mine didn’t burn at all!)

Take it out of the oven and let it cool for One hour or more to let it solidify. This step is very important to make sure it isn’t too liquidy. The consitancy should be like Pecan Pie Filling.

Garnish with Sea Salt or Himalayan Salt; any big salt flakes. But regular table salt will do just fine if the others aren’t available.

Queer Polyamorous Love Spells

As Pride Month winds down, I wanted to share some love spells for a subculture-within-a-subculture that often gets overlooked: queer polyamorous people. 

Polyamory (sometimes called Ethical Non-Monogamy – as opposed to unethical non-monogamy, a.k.a. cheating) is an umbrella term that covers many types of relationships in which everyone involved knows that their partner is seeing other people and is okay with that. Polyamory is more common than many people realize: about 5% of all adults are currently in non-monogamous relationships and about 20% have tried some form of polyamory in the past.

Not all polyamorous folks are queer, but polyamorous people are more likely to identify as queer, and poly folks have always been an important part of the LGBTQ+ community. 

Despite increasing awareness and acceptance around polyamory, it can be hard to find resources for polyamorous love spells. Most of the love spells you can find online or in books are designed for monogamous people. While some of these spells can be adapted for polyamorous love, here are a few designed specifically for poly folks. 

Spell for a Loving, Healthy Polycule

A polycule is a group of people who are linked by romantic relationships – it consists of all members of a polyamorous group and all of their partners. It’s sort of like the poly alternative to saying that two people are a “couple.” 

Polycules can take lots of different shapes. For example, a three-person polycule might be a triad (three people who are all romantically involved with each other, sometimes called a throuple), or it might be a hinge (Person A is dating both Person B and Person C, but Person B and Person C are not dating). A five person polycule may all be dating each other, or it might be a combination of couples, triads, and/or hinges. Just because someone is in your polycule does not mean you are actively dating and/or having sex with them.

This spell is designed primarily to strengthen existing polycules, but it could be adjusted to help a single person attract a polycule.

You will need:

One candle to represent each member of your polycule (These can be figure candles that match each person’s gender identity, colored and/or scented candles that represent their personalities, or white candles with each person’s name carved into one. If you are single and trying to attract a polycule, simply use one plain white or red candle.)

Lavender essential oil

Juice from a slice of orange 

Rose petals 

To perform the spell:

Dress each candle with the lavender oil. As you rub the oil into the candle, say something like, “May we communicate clearly and speak true. May your polycule bring peace and comfort to you.”

Dress each candle with a few drops of orange juice. As you do, say something like, “May our love bring you joy and bliss. I seal this blessing with a kiss.” Kiss the candle before setting it down in your workspace.

Sprinkle rose petals around the candles to form a circle, then sprinkle rose petals in the spaces in between the candles. Once there are no more noticeable empty spaces, say something like, “Our love surrounds us and connects us. Our love supports us and uplifts us. Our relationship is perfect for us. Our polycule is strengthened thus.”

Light the candles and, as they burn, visualize your polycule feeling happy, loved, and supported. Let the candles burn down completely.

Villager Associations and Spell Suggestions

(Note: these are my personal correspondences and based off my experiences and personal feelings. Feel free to use, but be aware they may not work for you without some tweaking. Also, this list doesn't contain any 1.5 content, or villagers who can't be given gifts like Marlon.)

I've called this an association list and not a correspondence list because I'm doing this a bit differently. Instead of giving a detailed list of stuff, I'm giving my primary correspondence, an in-game item I associate with the character with, and some magical (or magic-adjacent) things you can do to connect with the character.

Pierre- I associate Pierre with ambition and use a Treasure Chest as his symbol. Suggested activities include magic to help get/ace job interviews, performance assessments, or other things that can help you further your goals and/or career.

Caroline- I associate Caroline with gardening and use a Green Tea Leaf as her symbol. Suggested activities include green magic, specifically gardening spells.

Abigail- I associate Abigail with exploration and use an Ancient Sword as her symbol. Suggested activities include protection magic, spells for courage, death magic, or spells to try and get a smothering parent to back off.

Jodi- I associate Jodi with love of all kinds and use an Ornamental Fan as her symbol. Suggested activities include spells to help strengthen a relationship (with the other person's consent!), spells to help forgive, and hearth magic of all kinds.

Kent- I associate Kent with trauma and use a daffodil for his symbol. Suggested activities include spells for things like anxiety and shadow work. (But don't stop your mental health regimen if you have one without talking to a professional about it, whether that's therapy, medication, etc)

Sam- I associate Sam with music and use an Ancient Drum as his symbol. Suggested activities include experimenting with the effects of music on your spellcasting, writing a chant, or crafting a spell based off of a song you like.

Vincent- I associate Vincent with energy and movement and use Cranberry Candy as his symbol. Suggested activities include energy work and looking into mindful walking or other forms of meditation that don't involve sitting perfectly still.

Emily- I associate Emily with textiles and use a bolt of Cloth as her symbol. Suggested activities include knot and thread magic, embroidering sigils on your stuff, learning how to sew poppets, or astral travel.

Haley- I associate Haley with seeing the true nature of things and use a Pink Cake as her symbol. Suggested activities include revealing spells, happiness spells, and baking bread/sweets and enchanting them for health, happiness, etc.

George- I associate George with the passage of time and use an Ancient Fruit as his symbol. Suggested activities include ancestor veneration (whether that's your actual ancestors or ancestors of choice) or trying something like Write Your Witchcraft once a year to see what's changed in your practice.

Evelyn- I associate Evelyn with flowers, and use a Tulip as her symbol. Suggested activities include planting a garden (either for real or in-game) based on magical correspondences, exploring stuff like flower crown magic, or just learning how to take better care of your plants.

Alex- I associate Alex with effort and practice, and use a Large Egg of either color as his symbol. Suggested activities include practicing areas of your craft you feel need improvement and spells related to athletics.

Pam- I associate Pam with travel and use a Model Ship decoration as her symbol. Suggested activities include making travel altars or shrines, blessing spells for safe travel, and spells to get your bags to the same place you're going.

Penny- I associate Penny with dreams and use a Poppy as her symbol. Suggested activities include astral travel, keeping a dream journal, and dream magic as a whole.

Robin- I associate Robin with building and crafts, and use a piece of Wood or Hardwood as her symbol. Suggested activities include picking up new crafts and seeing how to work them into your practice or doing something like this exercise to get a detailed idea of how your practice has been built.

Demetrius- I associate Demetrius with the mind and use a Purple Mushroom as his symbol. Suggested activities include things like keeping a journal of spells where you record successes/failures/unplanned effects and working on or dusting off your critical thinking/discernment skills.

Sebastian- I associate Sebastian with solitude and use a Yeti's Tear as his symbol. Suggested activities include hexing, banishing, and techno magic.

Maru- I associate Maru with innovation and use a Battery as her symbol. Suggested activities include spellcrafting, cosmic magic, techno magic, and astrology.

Marnie- I associate Marnie with animals and use Apples as her symbol. Suggested activities include things like pet blessings, connecting with your familiar, or communication with an animal guide.

Shane- I associate Shane with recovery and use the Chicken Statue as his symbol. Suggested activities include self love spells and shadow work.

Jas- I associate Jas with imagination and use a Fairy Rose for her symbol. Suggested activities include visualization exercises and exploring how to safely create servitors.

Elliott- I associate Elliott with literature and writing, and use a Duck Feather as his symbol (since I can't give him a feather pen haha). Suggested activities include reading magical/witchy books with a critical eye, creating spells inspired by your favorite books/stories/folktales, updating your grimoire or book of shadows, or writing letters to entities you work with.

Leah- I associate Leah with the fine arts, and use landscape paintings as her symbol. Suggested activities include incorporating color symbolism into your spells, sigilcraft, and art magic at large.

Harvey- I associate Harvey with healing and use a Dandelion as his symbol. Suggested activities include healing spells (along with seeking physical or mental health care if necessary, because magic is not a substitute for science or help from a professional) and energy work.

Linus- I associate Linus with freedom and use seasonal foraging items as his symbol. Suggested activities include cursebreaking, cord cutting rituals, and learning the magical correspondences of your local plants and flowers.

Clint- I associate Clint with fire and the forge, and use an Iron Bar as his symbol. Suggested activities include candle magic, flame divination, smoke cleansing, enchanting your jewelry, researching the magical uses of various metals, and including the metals in your practice.

Gus- I associate Gus with kitchen magic and use cooked food dishes as his symbol. Suggested activities include practicing kitchen witchcraft, researching/crafting potions that are safe to consume, and making sure you have something to eat or drink on hand after casting a spell.

Lewis- I associate Lewis with power and use the Solid Gold Lewis Statue as his symbol. Suggested activities include volunteering to lead a group ritual or casting political resistance magic.

Krobus- I associate Krobus with the moon and use a Void Essence as his symbol. Suggested activities include using moon phases in your craft, concealment spells, glamours, and spells to help you sleep.

Sandy- I associate Sandy with the sun and use a Solar Essence as her symbol. Suggested activities include spells for happiness, luck, or prosperity and exploring the use of solar energy in your craft.

Spirit Work: Do You Qualify?

I keep seeing people approach spirit work like it’s no big deal. They’re drawn to it through companionship, demonology, angels, contact with the dead, faerie craft, tulpamancy, servitors, thoughtforms, deity worship, etc. There’s a lot that can fall beneath spirit work or be related to it in some form where people eventually end up looking at spirit work eventually.

What is spirit work?

Spirit work is the act of working with and communicating with spirits. Spirits can range in variety from fae, mermaids, demons, angels, dragons, etc. Then there’s subspecies of whatever species you may be able to come up with off the top of your head. They can be malicious or benign, humanoid or inhumane, lifelong presence in your life or a passing existence. They can be immortal, deities, sexual or nonsexual, weak and strong. Spirits are so diverse, it’s hard to label them all as a whole because of how many different species there are and societies with their own politics and way of life. They’re incorporeal and can be found around you or in the astral, some even within your dreams. They are as real as you and me. Generally, you want to be respectful and not treat them like Pokémon to be tamed. They are wild and free. This doesn’t mean you should let them walk all over you especially when they become a negative influence in your life.

Do you need to do spirit work?

Even if a lot of the craft comes back to spirit work in some shape or form, you DO NOT have to get into spirit work. When you get into spirit work, it’s like opening a door that’s near impossible to close once opened. You invite one spirit into your life, twenty more will come knocking on your door. It’s perfectly possible to cohabitate with a spirit and you not even know it was there. Especially if you’re not looking for them or actively working with spirits to learn to recognize its presence. Like any other skill, there are pros and cons to spirit work. It can be rewarding just as much as it can be dangerous. It’s very dependent on you and what you plan to do while exploring spirit work. Just because they are generally incorporeal doesn’t mean you’re invincible or immune to the consequences that come with working with spirits. You’re not a god and so long as you exercise caution, spirit work can be a great skill to have. If you choose not to get into spirit work, then awesome! Your path isn’t any less than anyone else’s just because you decide this line of work is not for you.

Discernment

Before you run off into the magical land of spirits, you need to be sure that what you see or experience is real. This is the single most important tool anyone can have and that is to be skeptical, to exercise critical thinking, and test it. While it’s nice to take people at their word, you should be questioning their information and confirm it with other sources and/or with personal experience. Research and understand what it is you want to get into and what it is you’re trying to interact with. Spirits can be tricky beings and lie or change their form to appear as other things. They will try to scam you for offerings or even mess with you because they’re bored and think it’s funny. Not every spirit is going to be like this yet it happens. And being able to discern between the lies and what you deem as real will be essential in your interactions with spirits.

Divination

You want some form of physical communication with spirits that’s beyond only using telepathy or what you think you heard. Two or three different forms of divination would be ideal to check your results against and even confirm. Personally, I like to check and double check for personal assurance. I use tarot/oracle as my main form of divination and check if what I’m interpreting is correct with my pendulum. I use this a lot to confirm that what I’ve experienced happened and to gauge a spirit’s wants or needs.

Protection

How adept are you with protection? This is personal protection, wards of a space, more wards to prevent lying, glamor, teleportation, etc. Finding just the right amount of protection because there is such a thing as too much. Protection is a huge part of what you want to have around you to avoid a lot of potentially large problems before they can become one. There are preventative measure for a reason. There’s loopholes you want to avoid in the making of your wards like ‘only beings with positive intentions can come through’ or using only light as protection. The problem with the first notion is that it’s too open. A spirit with the intention to ‘fix’ you can be considered positive because this being has the intention for the highest good for you by its standards may not be the highest good by your standards. That’s a very weak premise to build a ward. The problem with the latter is that it won’t stop a being of light from just walking right through your ward. Again, it’s weak. Wards can be tricky business. The best way to build them is to write them out on paper and then try to find a way around them to break your own wards.

Banishment

If you’re going to be interacting with spirits, you want a way to banish them if they break your rules or become volatile. Why would you interact with a spirit you can’t get rid of? It’d be pretty asinine to willingly come into contact with a spirit you can’t banish and then have that spirit refuse to leave. How can you get it to stop escalating and becoming a worse situation? You want different methods of banishment as well from energetic intent to physical means of banishment. You want tailored banishment methods for the spirits you plan to contact. If you don’t know how to banish a spirit, then you probably shouldn’t be looking to interact with them.

Spirits can leave behind residue that can attract parasites. They can bring parasites. What you’re doing can attract more spirits or more parasites. It’s a good habit to get into to cleanse a space before and after interacting with spirits. It keeps you energetically clean as well as your space.

Energy Work

I’ve heard of people weak at sensing energies being able to do spirit work. It can be very hit and miss. Energy work is what you use to be able to sense a spirit and identify them. Personally, I recommend you have some basis in energy work before getting into spirit work. It’s an invaluable skill that’d provide an extra form of protection and open up new avenues of interacting with spirits. It’d help to learn what a spirit feels like, their energy signature, and alignments to better be able to single them out.

Astral Travel

This is a skill that’s more optional yet I always recommend having it in your skillset if you wish to get into spirit work. A lot of what you learn when getting into astral travel overlaps with spirit work since you’re opening yourself up to traveling into different realms that may have spirits. Much like spirit work, you’re opening a door that’s near impossible to close once opened. Astral travel provides you with a space you can work in, to be able to travel to a spirit’s homeland, observe their way of life, direct interaction, and being able to ‘see’ what the spirit may look like.

Dangers of Spirit Work

Like I’ve touched on throughout this post, there are dangers to spirit work. You’re opening yourself up to spirits and allowing yourself to interact with them. You don’t know this spirit and they likely don’t know you. They can and will mess with you if it strikes their fancy. Spirits can hurt you in creative ways, pose as a deity, pretend to be from your past life, abuse you and use you. Spirit’s personalities and motivations are as diverse as interacting with people around you. You can’t predict how a spirit will act nor how things will unfold between you by beginning interactions. All you can do is take the precautions to protect yourself, your space, and those that matter to you the best ways you can. Be cautious and don’t put yourself in unnecessary danger just because you decided to see what happens. If you go out looking for danger, you’ll find it.

How to take care of your spirit companion?

@starryskywitch asked: “In a recent ask you mentioned that spirits need to eat, could you explain how that works? And also maybe the basics of taking care of a spirit if you’d be so kind? C: “

I’ve been meaning to write a post on this for a long time. Then I saw someone did it already xD http://magic-for-the-masses.tumblr.com/post/160143675923/do-you-know-of-any-guids-for-taking-care-of-your  ( @magic-for-the-masses ) But I still decided to go ahead and write my own.

I think a good way to look at this is by taking into account the pyramid of needs. By the way, I’m no psychologist, so I don’t know if this is severely outdated or not, but I think it’s a good basis. (For further reading into this, you can look up Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.)

So the base is physiological needs. Food, water, warmth, rest. Or in the case of your spirit, whatever they need to drink/eat so they don’t starve, whatever weather and environment they need (if any is fine, okay. Mr.Dragon doesn’t *need* a lava river, but he’s definitely happy in one.), and time to rest. But then you think “But Scholar! I *have* to build wards around me and my companion for them to be safe! That’s vital!” And yes, but not physiological. Apparently this person first stated there are basic needs, and then made subdivisions. The wards fall into safety needs. A secured astral place, or well, your own home, with wards and barriers around it. The security of knowing they won’t be eaten up by a bigger, badder spirit at any moment. Even if you’re not into witchcraft, you should learn methods of spiritual/psychic protection, in order to take better care of your spirits. (Stating this since I usually see spiritual protection being talked about in the context of witchcraft.)

After that there come the psychological needs: first, feeling loved and like you belong. Then, the self esteem.

If you’re skilled at spirit communication, and a demonstrative person, you’ll make them feel loved easily, if you actually like them. If you have trouble showing love, or communicating with spirits, someways to show them they’re loved are:

-Offerings, in every shape or form.

-Daydreaming about them. Thinking about them. Seeing something and go ‘I bet Betsy would like this.’ They can feel it. They know.

-If you have an altar dedicated to them, or part of an altar, keep it clean, neat, re-design it, play with it… It’s a space in your life you’ve dedicated to them. By taking care of it, you’re taking care of them.

Then, the self esteem. Feelings of accomplishment and prestige. For the accomplishment thing, it’s good to ‘assign them tasks’, or ask them for help with certain stuff. X spirit will act as your body guard. Y spirit will help you with your self esteem and pick cute outfits. J spirit will give your food extra flavor and help maintain a clean house. They get to do stuff with you and for you, and get praised in return (you should praise and thank them!), making them feel accomplished.

For the prestige thing… I’m not sure if what I’m thinking of falls in this category. In other pyramids, I’ve seen clothes and shelter listed in the basic needs. And it’s somewhat true. Clothes and shelter makes it so a person doesn’t die of hypothermia, for example. But just really basic sheltering and clothing fulfills that need. IMO, clothes and shelter give them prestige… In their own eyes. Those are things that can elevate their self esteem. A big house filled with toys made my kid spirits really happy. Changing their old, outdated clothes for new, modern clothes (and leather jackets!) makes them feel badass, and good about themselves. Even my cat spirit asked for clothes (and we designed it from scratch and came up with the most disgusting piece of cat clothing ever and we destroyed it and swore to never do that again).

The peak of the pyramid is about self actualization and self fulfillment, including creative endeavors.

Some of my spirit companions, after watching me doing it for so long, got into tabletop roleplaying xD It’s a creative endeavor that makes them really happy. I just leave RPG books on my altar, and Mr.GuardianAngel learns the game and acts as the dungeon master for the other spirits. I wanted to tell this because it’s very endearing <3 And so you remember the spirits actually go and do things in their own.

But some ways you can directly involve yourself in fulfilling these last needs are:

-Watch informative videos and documentaries with them, on themes of their interest. For some time Mr.Dragon got really curious about how other humans were, and we watched videos of people reading their old diaries for like a week.

-If you write or draw, tell them they can influence your creation, and let them create with you.

-If they feel like they can write/draw on their own, let them, and show interest when they show it to you. My companions tell me about the stories they write/roleplay through tarot cards. I just pull all the cards I feel I need and through reading them I get to know the story.

-If you astral travel, travel with them to locations neither of you know (with safety measures please!) so you can learn together. To anyone who has read this far, thanks for reading. I hope this is useful for you.

Hyrule Calender

I’ve created my own holidays for hyrulian pc, with a little inspiration from the wheel of the year. It doesn’t follow it exactly, but it gave me a starting point to work with.

Goddesses Grace (Dec 31 - Jan 1) - The Hyrulian New Year, celebrating the creation of Hyrule. Three candles are lit throughout the day on the 31st, to represent the Goddesses, and then near midnight, each candle is blown out and a fourth, yellow or gold candle is lit at midnight. This represents the Goddesses departing for the Sacred Realm and leaving the Triforce behind. Wishes for the New year are written and placed into an envelope throughout the day, and then left under the fourth candle to be fulfilled by the Triforce. Other celebratory traditions around the New Year can be included for the individual practitioner.

Ribbon Day (Feb 14) - A day of celebration for showing love and merrymaking, food and small gifts are usually given on this day to show one’s affection. A special exchange for partnerships including exchanging red ribbons, to represent the gifting of a red scarf from the Goddess Hylia to her Chosen Hero. Giving gifts to one’s family and friends (and spending time with them) are also encouraged to build all of one’s important relationships.

Feast of Hylia (Mar 20 - 23) - A three day celebration to commemorate the Spring Equinox, and the Goddess Hylia. As the land wakes from dormancy and life begins to return, we celebrate the Goddess Hylia sending the land of Skyloft and the Triforce into the sky, as well as the Sealing of Demise. The Wing Ceremony for knights-in-training takes place on the last day of the festival, with the chosen Maiden acting as the Goddess. Other festival activities include music and feasts, as well as special aerial and combat shows by Senior Knights. Pumpkin soup is a favored treat during this time, but is out of season for most of the Surface. Southern Hemisphere Date (Sep 20 - 23)

Picori Festival (2nd Week of May) - Commemorates the coming of the Minish/Picori, as well as fairies and nature. Coincides with wildflower week. Fruits and vegetables of the season are standard offerings, as well as pastries and sweet drinks. As children are said to be able to see the Minish, the celebrations should have children friendly games and foods. You can also go on walks in nature and see if you can spot possible Minish and faerie hideaways. Be careful not to disturb them!

Feast of Farore (Jun 20 - 23) - A three day celebration to commemorate the Summer Solstice and the Goddess Farore’s part in creating the land. As nature reaches it’s peak and the the land bursts forth in greenery, we remember Farore spilling her rich soul across the land and bringing forth life. Dancing and music are popular ways to celebrate, as well as crafting and good food. Lots of different produce is available this time of year and so make for great offerings. Southern Hemisphere Date (Dec 20 - 23)

Carnival of Time (3rd Week of August) - A three day celebration known mainly in Termina. While the Carnival of Time is mainly a Terminian celebration, it is still an important part of the year. Celebrating the Four Giants, Goddess of Time, and the last harvest of the year, it also serves as an important cultural holiday. Couples engaged or married during the Carnival are said to receive greater blessings. The main hallmark of the Carnival is the making of masks, which originally mimicked the faces of the Four Giants, but over time came in many shapes and styles. The Carnival also includes music, dancing, games and performances.

Feast of Din (Sep 20 - 23) - A three day celebration to commemorate the Autumnal Equinox and the Goddess Din’s contributions to creating the land. As the last day of equal light and dark before the nights grow longer, we take part in Din’s strength in creating the seasons, the protection of the last harvest, and preparing the land for the coming winter. Music, dance and hearty foods like soups and stews are good here, especially as the days grow colder. Southern Hemisphere Date (March 20 - 23)

Carnival of Twilight (Oct 30 - Nov 1) - A three day celebration of the Hero of Twilight’s journey and the connection forged with the Twilight Realm. It is also a time to honor the dead, as well as other spirits. The 31st is Poes Night, and coincides with Halloween and Samhain. Children dress up in costumes, and carry lanterns to protect them from wandering Poes, while playing games and collecting treats. Sometimes the festivities are extended an extra day. Southern Hemisphere Date (Apr 29 - May 1)

Feast of Nayru (Dec 20 - 23) - A three day celebration marking the Winter Solstice and the Goddess Nayru. This is a time of reflection and thanks on the longest night of the year, as we reflect on the year that is passing and the new one to come. Baking and cleaning make good devotional activities to prepare for the coming longer days. Consider what your New Years resolution might be. Will you honor Nayru by learning a new skill, or build on an old one? Southern Hemisphere Date (June 20 - 23)

Talk to Your Objects- A Guide to Light Spirit Work

This is a practice that can take a little bit to hone, but can save you a lot of time and really enrich your practice in the long run. Talk to your stuff. Like, really, talk to it. More importantly, listen to what it says back.  This idea largely stems from an animist perspective, where everything has its own soul. By that extension, even inanimate objects are something we can commune with, and through that gain a deeper understanding.

Examples of Use

Talking with a ritual tool regularly, so when you use it you’re bonded with it much more closely.

Asking a unique tool or ingredient directly how you can use it. (Hello, necklace. What kind of enchantments would you take to best?)

Asking for elaboration on a traditional correspondence (what kind of love does it attract? How strong are its protection properties? Protection from what?)

Being more mindful about everyday objects and when they need to be cleansed (such as your bed.)

Knowing when something is “up” with an object (because you’re more readily familiar with its energy)

A deeper understanding of exactly what is going into your spells and why

What You Need

Some level of comfort with discernment, energy work, personal shielding, wards, and banishing. This isn’t a guide designed for absolute beginners, so if there’s anything you don’t feel ready for yet/don’t understand, learn about that first and return to this when you do feel comfortable! 

Something to speak with (for starting, I recommend something that has meaning to you already. I don’t recommend pictures of people because that risks turning into a different kind of spirit work which isn’t what we’re here for.)

An open mind. 

And Then…

Make sure before you do any spirit work that your personal protections are up and refreshed, whatever that means for you. Find a space you can focus and sit with the object in your hands. Talk to it. Really say something out loud, directed at its essence like you would speak to another human. “Hi there. How are you feeling?”

Responses can come in a lot of different ways. You may hear a “voice” in your thoughts that sounds different from your usual thinking voice. You may have images pop into your mind’s eye. Your hands may feel energy of a certain texture, color, etc. Be open to however the message may come in. Do this regularly, and get comfortable with the way that object’s essence feels, how you receive messages, etc. Start with little, inconsequential things while you feel it out.

How Do I Know What’s Real and What’s My Imagination?

Short answer: You don’t. Do it anyway. Long answer: There’s never going to be any 100% certainty in spirit work. It’s important to remember that whether these entities even exist is up for debate in wider culture, and it’s definitely possible for a believer to delude themselves. That said, practice really really does help. Ask about things you can verify, or things you can see payoff with (aka simple signs.) Trust your gut if something feels very fake. If you’re having regular doubts, roll with a conversation in the moment and look back on it with a more critical eye later. That way, if it is real, you’re not wasting all your energy in the moment trying not to doubt yourself. Let yourself communicate comfortably, get what information you’re searching for, and review it when you’re not in the thick of it. If you make the call that something is your imagination, that’s totally fine! It still teaches you something. Now you know what that object’s energy doesn’t feel like, and can recognize that flavor of your imagination next time.
