Through the Test of Time: Part 2
*finally a part 2! Thanks for the love on the first part, I really appreciate it. This is something I do for fun. If you have ideas, send them my way because I definitely want to write some more. Hope you enjoy this part!*
It’s been a month since your world blew up. And a month of crashing on Sam’s couch. He doesn’t mind since he is always out training or saving the world, usual superhero duties. He is only mad at the fact that Bucky cheated on you, with her of all people. The girl who is constantly trying to weasel her way into the group, always asking Bucky for extra sparring time and keeping him from coming home at a decent hour. Shannon wasn’t like this before, not until Bucky started to give her the attention that she is clearly yearning for. Of course you have brought it up to him before, but he said nothing was going on between them and how she really needed those extra training sessions. And you believed him, you trusted him. So naive.
Bucky surprisingly has stopped trying to contact after 5 days…5 fucking days. Not even a week. No texts, calls, emails, nothing. Did not even bother coming to Sam’s house or anything. I guess he took my last words to him seriously. The past month you tried to go to work, but everytime you left the house you just started crying because everything reminded you of him. You decided to take some personal time off but with work piling up, you have to go back. Or last least come back to reality.
“Okay..y/n. I think it is time you start putting yourself out there again. Not in the sense of dating, but I don’t know, maybe go out with your friends, take a stroll, or at least come into the living room. I say this with kindness and love but you are starting to stink up the place..like literally” said Sam.
“Way to make a girl feel better Sam” You said with an eye roll. He looks at you with worried eyes wondering what would it take for you to at least step out for some fresh air. Sam always saw you like a little sister and would kill to protect you. And right now..that is what he is thinking of doing to Bucky.
“What if I make you a deal? You, me, and Torres tonight. Small dive bar, lowkey vibes. You can leave after at least 1..no 2 drinks. I will even pay for your drinks and a couple rounds of pool? I will literally let you choose that lame song you like on the jukebox” said Sam. You started getting flashbacks to that song he mentioned. It was yours and Bucky’s favorite song on roadtrips, dancing in the rain, and karaoke. He hates it but loves watching you sing while he is just standing behind you admiring you.
“First off, Somewhere Only We Know is an iconic song. Ever heard of Glee? Darren Criss? But fine, I will come out for a bit. Especially because you’re paying for everything AND I am suddenly feeling quite thirsty. Thanks Sam!”
He looks at you with the same worried eyes but not because he feels bad for you, but because he feels bad for his credit card. The last time you went out with him and he said he was paying…you nearly maxed out his credit card. From drinks, to food, to somehow a new couch. A couple tequila shots and he thinks he is made of money.
At the bar you were just nursing your drink listening to both the guys banter about god knows what. You start feeling like yourself again, a sense of normalcy. It was nice to talk to Torres because the only other person you have seen the past month has been Sam and his jokes get annoying fast (still love him though). After a couple drinks and shots, you were smack talkin, ready to take them both down in some pool.
“Losers have to do karaoke..winner’s choice” you said. You already knew that you were going to win because pool was all you played in college with friends after long days of classes and studying.
“Woo! That was easy..okay boys pony up because you will be singing my favorite song”
“Please choose any song but that” said Sam.
“Well next time don’t lose” you said and that got a laugh out of Torres.
“C’mon Sam it will be so much fun!!” Torres said while patting him on the back.
As they were singing, you started thinking about Bucky and all the memories attached to that song. Thinking of how you wanted these songs to be your wedding entrance song and seeing Bucky in front of you at the altar. But now all that is just a dream.
While the boys are belting and singing off key, you took that as a sign to get another round. As you were waiting for the drinks, you turned your head and your face went white. Bucky. Walking in with his hands in his pocket while scanning his eyes like he was searching for something. You quickly turn away and grab your drinks. Right when you reached the table, you felt a hand grab you.
“Y/N..hey”
“What are you doing here?”
“Sam said you guys were gonna be here and I wanted see you and talk”
You gave Sam a deadly glare. He tried to hide behind Torres and Torres tried to hide behind him. “Let’s do the song again!!” said Sam. God he really was trying to ruin the song for you now.
“Look you had a month to talk to me, I don’t want to hear whatever bullshit excuse you were practicing in the mirror. Please don’t ruin my first night out in a month. I really just want to be here with those who care about me. And would never betray me”. You said trying not to let your emotions get to you.
“Please give me 2 minutes and if you don’t like what I have to say, I will stop bothering you”. You nodded and followed him out the bar into the chilly air.
“Are you cold? Do you want my jacket?”
“You’re wasting your 2 minutes” as you stare at your watch.
"I know you're hurt. I know you're angry and you have every right to be. What I did... I can't take it back. I wish I could, more than anything. If I could go back and undo the pain I caused, I would in a heartbeat. But I can’t. What I can do is everything in my power to make sure the future looks nothing like the past. And when I close my eyes and picture that future… It's you. It’s always been you. It’s us. Building a life, hand in hand. From the quiet mornings to the loud laughter. From raising kids, to spoiling grandkids, to growing old together sitting side by side on a porch, watching the sun set on all the years we’ve lived and loved together. I don’t want a life without you. Not for a single second. So I’m standing here, not just saying I’m sorry… but saying I will fight for you, for us, for the life we were meant to share. If you’ll let me."
“Bucky..all this just sounds like empty promises. You still never answered my question. Why did you cheat on me? What did I do to make you look for something with someone else? Of all people too, you choose her. You really hurt me. You didn’t even fight for me when I left, how can I believe that you will fight for me now and in the future”.
“Y/N, you didn’t do anything. This wasn’t about you, it was about me. My insecurities. My fear. My selfishness. I thought I had to prove something to myself, and instead I destroyed the one real thing I ever had. And you’re right. I didn’t fight for you. I froze. I shut down. I thought I had already lost you the moment you walked away — and maybe I deserved to. But I see it now… what I lost. What I threw away. And I know that nothing I say can undo what I did. No promises, no pretty words. You want to know how you can believe I’ll fight for you now.
She stood in silence, arms crossed, heart thundering in her chest as Bucky’s words hung heavy in the air. Part of her wanted to run, to slam the door on everything he'd shattered. But another part the quiet, aching part, still remembered the way he used to hold her when the world felt like too much. She searched his face, looking for lies, for weakness, for the man who had once let her down so completely. But what she saw wasn’t the boy who cheated. It was a man who had finally realized what he’d lost and was willing to carry that weight, even if she never looked back.
“I’m not saying I forgive you,” she said at last, her voice barely a whisper. “But I’m tired of carrying all this pain alone. So if you really want to fight for me... start now. Show me, not just with words, but with actions. Day by day.” She didn’t reach for his hand, but she didn’t turn away either. And as they stood there still broken, still bleeding something unfamiliar flickered in the space between them: not forgiveness, not yet. But maybe, just maybe, the beginning of a second chance.
