On a website I was browsing there was an article questioning why Jesus would not mention homosexuality if it is as sinful as some people view it today. One commentor then lest a link to this site HERE that supposedly listed the times in the New Testament that condemn LGBTQ people/actions. Despite the piles of essays I need to do, I decided to explain why none of them do.
This is actually very simplified answer, I hope to post a more indepth discussion that I've been working on but until here's the short of it.
Romans is in reference to the commitment (or attempt) of beatiality in Genisis (the men in Sodom and woman with the creation of the Nephilim) with angels. However that is actually just one of many interpretations, for quite a long time people believed this verse referred to people choosing man over God/their beliefs. Some even say that it is about going against you sexual orientation and can applies to gays trying to go straight.
1 Corinthians: This is actually a very misunderstood passage and it is a translation issue. Malakos is a word that can mean effeminate, it also had connotations that we don't quite understand in our language today and has sometimes been translated as cowardness as well. However arsenokoitus the word often translated into homosexual has no known meaning! In fact, Paul made this word up and if you look at the history of the translation it was only in the 1950's that people came to believe it meant homosexual. It has also been translated as masterbator, weak-willed, and men choose humans over God.
Galatians actually does not mention homosexuality in any way, I suppose if you view homosexuality as fornication you could say it does. However to prove that homosexuality is fornication you can not use a verse that only says fornication.
Same applies to Ephesians,
And Colossians.
And 1 Timothy.
And Titus.
In Jude it is again important to remember what 'strange flesh' the Sodomites were going after. Remember that angels are not human, in fact some Christians believe they do not even have a gender because of a verse in Mark. I as a woman would not consider another woman to of strange flesh, she is made of the same flesh as I am! Between two people of the same sex you (usually at least) know what you are going to find, even between two people in general, you'll know where their genitals are, their heart, which part of the body hair usually grows ect. Thus the strange flesh again reference to them going after angels, a species other than their own. Note that it is the union between angels that led to the Great Flood, showing the severity of an angel and human mating.
Again, Revelation mentions people who defile themselves, are unclean, ect, but does not say "they defiled themselves with homosexuality" or "The defilement resulted from two men having sex with each other".
There are plenty of cases where God's word clearly lays out "And X had sex with Y" sometimes in positive cases or sometimes in sinful cases. Other times while they don't say it right out it is clearly shown in the context "X seized Y and laid with Y, Y than had baby Z" kind of things.
Homosexuality was quite common in the Greco-Roman times (though loving, long term relationships were not common or out in the open as it was usually viewed as something a younger boy and older man engaged in. In fact anal sex between two men was viewed as shameful for the bottom man). It would have been easy for Jesus to say "hey! That's not right!" Or any other of the prophets, Paul isn't known for his subtle when condemning sin. How often did he say lies, adultery, murder, stealing was wrong? I could fill a whole nother comment with it! Yet he never said "two men should not have sex" or "two woman should not have sex" it seems if it was such a big issue he wouldn't have danced around it.
And let's pretend I didn't believe that God loves gays. Even if the bible did actually condemn it, it was hardly on it's Top 10 List. The New Testament was much more concerned with teaching the young congregation to love one another, the best way to follow Christ and build a community. The bible condems greed and pride MUCH more often and yet it is something that we as Christians today hardly talk about. The pastor at my grandmother's church cheated on his wife with a much younger girl in the church. Yet if anyone of my cousins or siblings ever told her we were gay I have no doubt she would have disowned us. The greatest order Jesus ever gave us was to love each other as ourselves and to leave judgement to God alone. It is something many overlook when confronted with homosexuality.
In my opinion all the press that gets generated is simply Satan drawing people from God. It a two fold plan and works quite well. In one way it makes LGBTQ people feel alienated and turn from God, and then even non-LGBTQ people look a this and ask "What kind of loving God could hate his own children and want them to burn in hell for loving someone?" Then they too turn away from God. On the other hand people become so blinded by the 'sins of homosexuality' that the real problems in the Christian community get overlooked. Because of that the community devides itself and becomes weakened.
I'm not saying all this to attack you, you are entitled to you beliefs and anyone should be cautious when saying "THIS is what the bible says". I only do it because I sincerly hope that you can see past the lies the world spread and the true love that God has for all his children. God hates sin and not the sinner and he does not condemn love because it is the only through love that we become closer to God.
For every Mary at the feet of Jesus, there’s a Martha chastising her for not helping in the kitchen. For every protest sign that triumphs a God who universally loves His creation, there’s a banner on the other side of the street that quotes Jesus’ analogy of the narrow road. For every verse in Galatians celebrating the joys of being saved by grace alone, there’s a verse in James that says faith without works is dead.
All these ideas are Biblical. But which ones are right?
