Riddle squinted at the canvas in front of him, a paintbrush in his hand. You suppressed a giggle from next to him, amused by his extreme concentration as he continued to scour the unpainted parts of the canvas for the next best thing to add.
“Y-You know, you don’t have to be so stiff,” you added, nudging him gently. “It’s fine to be more loose while painting. The whole point of art is to express yourself, and if you’re gonna be this… tense about it, it might be hard.”
Riddle blinked, glancing at you. “But I want it to look nice! It would just be a waste of materials if I were to haphazardly splash paint everywhere.”
You smiled, shaking your head. “Even messy paint is art, you know. They have whole movements of art dedicated to unconventional means of art.”
“Really?” Riddle murmured, looking at his paintbrush. He shook his head, huffing and straightening his back again. “But! I want to make my painting look nice. I haven’t painted a lot before, so I want to do my best so I can actually learn how to do it.”
You watched him dip his paintbrush again into the bucket of red paint by his side before carefully outlining the rose he had sketched onto his canvas. You grinned; watching your boyfriend outside of his usual, austere positions often felt like watching a baby duckling ambling about in the world.
“Here, try holding the brush like this,” you guided, stepping up from behind him. You wrapped your arms around him, carefully taking his hand in yours and adjusting his grip. “Holding it like this will give more power to your wrist. It’ll make it easier to outline all the curves and detailed lines of the rose.”
You pat his back with your other hand, resting your chin against his shoulder. “Your previous hold works better for more powerful, robust brushstrokes. That’ll work best for coloring large patches of the canvas.”
Riddle nodded slowly, adjusting his fingers in the way that you showed him. He did his best to remember the way his skin felt against the new angle of the brush, soaking in all the knowledge you were showing him. “Like this?”
“Yeah! You’re doing amazing!” You praised. “See? You’re picking this up quickly! I bet you’ll be a master painter in no time.”
He coughed awkwardly, his pale cheeks heating up a little. “Well, I’d say I still have a long way to go before I become a master painter, but painting’s gradually becoming easier and more enjoyable now that you’re showing me the ropes.”
He paused, peering outside of his window to look down at all the crimson roses swaying in the wind. “Trying my own hand at this makes me appreciate all the hard work of my dorm mates more. I had no clue it took this much work to paint something.”
“Painting roses and painting on a canvas are two different things,” you pointed out. “Although it does take effort to get good at both. I’m sure the upperclassmen have done their fair share of work to teach the younger students well.”
Riddle nodded, his red hair bouncing with his movements. “I tried it a while back, and it’s definitely much easier to do it with magic. But I suppose you lose the artistic creativity aspect of it if you do it in such a fashion.”
“I should try painting with my peers more often,” he spoke up after a pause, smiling wistfully. “I feel sorry for… being so ruthless to them, but there’s no point in just moping around. I want to actually do better and create a dorm that can be as happy as it is successful.”
You squeezed his shoulder, hugging him from behind. You pressed a gentle kiss to his neck, watching him continue to paint carefully. “You’re doing a good job. Change isn’t easy, and the fact that you’re consciously trying by doing new things and looking at things the way your friends would is proof that you’re doing well.”
He sighed softly, nodding again. “I sure hope it is. I feel happier knowing that I’m trying to be better. Doing things like this with you is fun. I never thought I’d ever learn how to draw, but here I am, shakily painting a rose with you.”
With his other hand, he reached up to pat your head, a big grin on his face. “I feel less like a dorm leader these days and more like an everyday, normal student. It’s nice. I feel accepted, and I feel closer to my dorm mates.”
You pressed another kiss to his skin. “I’m glad you’re happy. You’ve come a long way.”
“I still have things I need to do before I’ll even come close to being satisfied,” he chuckled, giving his brush a tentative flick at the canvas. “But I’m sure it’ll be less lonely, now that I have you and everyone else at my side.”
Okay so, I need to get this out of the way. In no way am I dictating how people should write Riddle, as even the cutesy is accurate to some degree. This is just me as a Riddle simp analyzing the parts that seem to be over looked or ignored about Riddle's character.
I apologize if this is all over the place, as I was talking with friends about this and they encouraged me to write this analysis. Call it a spur of the moment analysis. (Also if you're reading this on desktop I'm so sorry about the subject text, idk how to do middle text rhejdj)
Fair warning, the later part will delve into the nsfw side of things. That part will have its warning so you can skip it to the conclusion.
His Personality In A Romantic Sense
Now, to start things off with. I want to explain the biggest interpretation of Riddle, something that (while I do enjoy) isn't his full character. The biggest and most seen interpretation I've seen of Riddle is him being someone who's really...cutesy.
Now I'm not saying that's wrong, he is cute, but most people seem to make him someone who's only cute and someone who's kind of like a baby. By this I mean when it comes to writing him in a romantic setting he's always written like some little kid with a cute crush.
And while I'm not saying any of this is wrong or inaccurate, it's really overlooking the other aspects of his personality. For example, he can be a huge tease and sadistic. How do I know? Look at the newly released anthology, where Riddle had shown a more sadistic and teasing side. How else does someone like him have such a shit eating smirk that can rival Ace's?
This to me has shown that Riddle can be someone who teases his lover more often than most would think. Countless of times, I've seen people have it that he's the one being teased and not having the upper hand in the relationship. When that's not really the case of how he would want it, but that discussion is for later in this post. The main point being, he wouldn't act like someone who's shy all the time with a crush. In fact, in my own opinion, he would honestly tease his crush a lot. Just to see them fluster, cause that gives him some power and he gets to see his crush possibly red.
But that's not to say if his crush was someone that teased him a lot he wouldn't shy. He most definitely would, but I've mostly seen people write his relationships this way than the other way. This even goes for non romantic relationships with his dorm, which is my next point.
There is a reason Riddle is the dorm leader
This is by far the biggest offense I've seen when I see people discuss of Riddle. Riddle isn't a pushover when it comes to his dorm, even after his OB. If fact it has been shown that he is still held in high regards by his dorm after the incident. He knows he went too far and is trying to change that, but even then he still has to keep his dorm in top shape.
And has anyone forgotten that absolutely no one wants to be a victim of his UM? I know it's funny to think about teasing and pranking Riddle, believe me that's my own character too, but it would actually be scary to be collared and punished by him. It was explained that not being able to use magic for a magic user is equivalent to being actually beheaded, in which case absolutely no one would actively seek it or want to provoke him for that to happen.
Have we also forgotten that Riddle was a dorm leader during his first year? He is a very powerful mage, one that was able to surpass the previous leader during the beginning of his first year. He has honed this great power thanks to his mother, who is a big part of why he is the way he is.
Which leads me to my next point. [This is the nsfw one kiddos, so skip if you ain't comfortable with it.]
Riddle in a Sexual Context
Now, almost everyone gets horny. Riddle would be no exception, I'm sorry. He is a growing teen who was only sheltered and forced to stay at home by his mother. Psychologically this would mean that he is more likely to act out or even be way more kinky then he lets on. As usually those who are repressed have a higher chance of being a very sexual person.
Now am I saying he would be horny a lot? No, but it is a likely possibility that he would have already know and learn how to hide this side of his. Since he does have a reputation of a dorm leader to uphold, he can't show any signs of immaturity or unprofessionalism.
Now, some may get angry at me when I say this. But, Riddle is most likely a dom. Now now, I'm not saying he can't be a sub. But consider this.
Riddle was controlled for most of his life by his mom, psychologically that will turn up in his bedroom life. And since we've seen how that has already psychologically affected him, him wanting control. I'm not saying he can't be a sub once in a while, that's almost everyone. But what I'm saying is if he already desires for control in life because of his childhood, he's gonna do the same in the bedroom.
This is why I think he's a dom, not because I'm a massive sub. He already desires that control and, while that's a turn on for me, it makes it very apparent that he would be a commanding dom. Someone who would command his partner to give in to him, to submit to him.
And I see so many people write him off as a submissive partner, when he honestly wouldn't really be. He was already controlled and force to submit to his mother's will, so in his adult and sexual life he would try to grasp at anything that would give him control and power. That's exactly how he was when he OB, so why wouldn't he be like that in bed?

Riddle is most often written off as someone who's a cute boy who can be flustered a lot or even a pushover, when he really isn't.
Riddle is a character who has and demands respect from both his dorm and others outside of it, he's a prodigy of his time who even Malleus says he's befitting of a king.
He's someone who has to face the harsh reality that his mother took his childhood, that his mother isn't always right.
He's someone who has moments of teasing and sadistic, generating small fear in the hearts of his dorm.
He's not just a cute baby boy, he's someone who should be taken seriously and cautiously. Cause let's remember, this boy does have a temper, so if you mess with him too much…
