Transition Words For Your Essays
Transition Signals:
Transitions are words and phrases that connect ideas and show how they are related.
To repeat and ideas just stated:
In other words,
That is,
To repeat,

To illustrate an idea:
For example,
For instance,
In particular,
To illustrate,

#tbt to when the #dreadlocks were flying and @urbanruben was painting his #artprize7 mural like a madman. Vote code 62108 if you love the goldfish at Front Street and Vernon intersection.
"[Artworks] Rather than giving back what we already can know without benefit of them, serve instead as instruments of self-revelation." Arthur C. Danto This painting of a local spot in Grand Rapids means more to me than simply "a painting of a bridge I walked over with @urbanruben and my friend and family." It is an opportunity for self-knowledge. We are not simply voyeurs in the world, our thoughts become actions that are imprinted in the consciousness of other people. Viewing an artwork like Ruben's that reflect the POV of someone unfamiliar with an area is an awesome opportunity for people who encounter these things every day to reconsider what the objects - bridge, clock tower, school - mean to them, and what this representation stirs in their hearts.
My Boston a Terrier Oscar in front of @urbanruben mural "Knowledge" in Lake Worth, Florida. Come see this AMAZING man at work all next week in Grand Rapids on his site-specific graffiti mural for #ArtPrize, a city-wide art competition. Yours truly will also be buzzing around making a general nuisance of herself as always, aka curating. Come see us! Watch a monumental street artist turn an underpass at Front Avenue under US-131 into a powerful underwater adventure through the history of street art. You won't be disappointed. FOR TEAL. For real. For teal, too, because underwater scenes require a lot of that color đđŽđŽđŽđŽFLA in MI
How to graciously say no to anyone
âThere is no money in answering letters.â âGroucho Marx
A couple of years ago, I was getting sent this article, âCreative People Say No,â at least twice a day. The idea was that creative geniuses say ânoâ to a lot of requests (like, a psychology professor researching processes of creative genius) in order to get their work done, so if you want to be a creative genius, you have to say no a lot so you can get your work done.
A bunch of people asked me what I thought about it, and I said, âItâs good advice for the rich and famous. Creative people say yes until they have enough work that they can say no.â
Ian Bogost explains it nicely, here:
[Y]ou have to say âyesâ for a long while before you can earn the right to say âno.â Even then, you usually canât say 'noâ at whim. By the time you can say 'noâ indiscriminately, then youâre already so super-privileged that being able to say 'noâ is not a prerequisite of success, but a result of it.
There was a little index card in the back of Steal Like An Artist that didnât make it into the book that sums up my own point of view: âBe as generous as you can, but selfish enough to get your work done.â
Of course, sometimes you just have to say no for whatever reason. For that, Alexandra Franzen suggests this format in her piece, âHow To Graciously Say No To Anyoneâ:
Hey [name],
Thanks for your note. Iâm so proud of you for ___âand Iâm flattered that youâd like to bring my brain into the mix.
I need to say âno,â because ___.
But I would love to support you in a different way. [Offer an alternative form of support here]
Thank you for being such a wonderful ___. I am honored to be part of your world.
[A few closing words of encouragement, if youâd like]
