USS Enterprise (CVAN-65) (bottom), USS Long Beach (CGN-9) (center) and USS Bainbridge (DLGN-25) (top) formed "Task Force One," the first nuclear-powered task force, and sailed 26,540 nmi (49,190 km) around the world in 65 days during Operation Sea Orbit. Accomplished without a single refueling or replenishment, "Operation Sea Orbit" demonstrated the capability of nuclear-powered surface ships.

On this day in 2005, Space Shuttle Discovery launched on STS-114. It was the first launch of the Shuttle following the Columbia disaster in February 2003.

During the launch, foam insulation broke off the external tank and impacted the orbiter; this led to another year-long pause in Shuttle launches.

STS-114 was also Eileen Collins’ last space flight; she had previously been the first woman shuttle mission commander.

#OTD in 1945, the USS Barb "sank" a train when a landing party went ashore at Karafuto, Japan, and planted the sub's scuttling charges on a track. As the party paddled back to the sub, the explosives detonated and wrecked a train. A victory mark in the form of a silhouette of the train was added to the bottom of Barb's battle flag. The raid was the only U.S. ground operation on the Japanese home islands during the war.

CVW-11 was assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) and was the first CVW to incorporate the anti-submarine squadrons (VS/HS) in 1974.
