The strategists
Run, even if it’s only for tonight.
Anyway, a few years after the end of the war, a certain quasi-redeemed princess was busy doing her princess duty and working late while the rest of the Caldera celebrated Solstice. Then an arrow tattooed guy dragged her out of the palace.
Girl found herself a tailored uniform - oh the Dai Li uniform always takes a special place in my heart.
"Not everyone can be saved" when it is the indoctrinated 14-year-old girl,
Yeah, precisely.
"Not everyone can be saved" doesn't mean someone doesn't/shouldn't get a chance. It means they may not even be willing to take that chance in the first place.
I dont like how everyone just glosses over irohs war crimes either, but at least we know he was willing to repent. Mind you, zuko was always bad asf and still managed to change. However, it was still a struggle for him in the beginning. From a narrative sense, I just think it'd be more emotionally impactful to see a reflection of iroh and ozai in azula and zuko. The tragedy of two siblings dragged through the same shit circumstances but one was able to rise above despite all that, and one wasn't.
Also, azula stans love to bring up her age as if she hasn't been showing psychopathic tendencies since age four. Sometimes kids are just shitty people, that happens.
X
Tell me you don’t view Azula as her character on her own but as a narrative accessory to elevate Zuko’s character, and “if Azula got redemption arc Zuko’s would be less special🥺” without saying them explicitly. So some character’s glory has to be built on the other character’s pain and misery, the more miserable the more desperate the latter is, the more glorified the former is? Got you, so you shut down a 14-year-old’s future while giving a pass to a man who was at least 50 who changed his course cuz he suffered a personal loss in the invasion he waged, all these so that your precious the best of all time redemption arc is more glorified. Let’s all forget about how Azula was been born the prodigy, had no adult to actually make her feel she can be loved unconditionally so that she could only crave for her father’s appreciation, and that her chance of reflecting on her course came at the end of the show.
And psychopathic tendencies at the age of 4 LMAO please try harder hiding your predisposition and bias towards azula the next time. Burning a wooden toy by accident when your firebending ability got unlocked the first time didn’t sound “psychopathic” (whatever this ableist word meant by you) to me. All her later behaviors do not look out of the line of a spoiled mean-spirited kid who had been picked and groomed by her father and influenced by the fire nation values oh and mind you she is also the princess worshipped by everyone.
Lmfao, where exactly does that post suggest anything about elevating zukos character? The whole point is one sibling gets redeemed and one sibling doesn't, zuko is already redeemed, unfortunately for you, so I guess that leaves azula (who yes has always been messed up, just read the fire academy comic) getting stuck with being the bad guy. Tough shit.
Sorry, we can't go back in time and rewrite the entire show so that azula stans can feel better 😂 you cant talk about bias when you immediately jump on to hate every character connected to azula because "they make her look bad" instead of just accepting that shes a bad person and theyre not.
… read the original post mate, “not everyone can be saved”, “from a narrative sense, I think it is more impactful… through the same circumstances and one was able do that despite all these, and one did not” - which are all clearly saying that for the OP Azula’s narrative purpose is to stay the way the show finishes at so that “not everyone can be saved” >> “the one saved is the special case and you can see the contrast there”.
Since when I jumped on character “who makes azula look bad”. Meanwhile there is a certain fraction in the fandom who believes Azula should stay the way she was at the end of the show in misery and pain devoid of hope for the rest of her life despite the comics clearly implying otherwise, perhaps out of the intention that Azula makes some other character look bad/less special?
But I mean your take from the ashes of the academy, one about indoctrination and societal influence is that “azula who has always been messed up”…
Babe... I wrote that original post lol. And way to show me you have the reading comprehension of a rock because how are you going to quote me and then misconstrue everything I said so you have a reason to argue.
Azual is a FICTIONAL character, her purpose in existence is to create a storyline. I like the parallel between ozai and iroh and zuko and azula. That's all. If zuko was the one that was still antagonistic and azula was apart of the gaang I'd be saying the exact same thing. But she isnt. So theres nothing to do about that lmfao. I, PERSONALLY, am just tired of every single villain getting redeemed simply because they have trauma. you can have a sympathetic character not be redeemed, that doesnt mean they dont deserve a chance, but that doesn't mean they'd necessarily take it either. Literally, almost ALL the kids in that show have trauma, if any one of them would've became evil then it would probably be valid. That still wouldnt justify anything they do tho.
Mai and ty Lee were both raised and brainwashed to be bad people, and they still took the chance to do something good. Zuko was a terrible person raised in the exact same environment as azula and still managed to become a good person when given the chance. Same with iroh even if it took a ridiculous amount of time. Azula (so, far) has not taken that chance. So yeah, not everyone can be saved because not everyone WANTS to be saved. Untill we actively see her change, shes still a bad person. Deal with it
I don't know if you have read my reply about HFM. I think my response was clear enough. Like dude I don’t understand why you are so obsessed with shutting down Azula’s future when her story is clearly still ongoing😲. I also don't know why people who hate Azula would be so alarmed at the possibility of a redemption arc for her. Just like I don't care about Zuko, whether he lives to be 99 or dies suddenly in the middle, I won't care at all - as long as it has nothing to do with Azula.
Lmfao how am i "shutting down the possibility" when i said numerous times i wouldnt mind her being redeemed? I would just prefer if she wasnt. Which is why i said PERSONALLY.
Azula stans are so obsessed. yall call anything that's not babying and victimizing azula hate, lol
Also, once again, bringing up zuko. Azula and zuko are literally siblings. Their stories will always be connected. Be mad at bryke about that not everyone else lol. Like how are you going to be mad that the villains character that was introduced to be a villain, is a villain lmao. I just dont understand why you guys cant just like the character for what it is, and worse is you'll demonize ever other character around her for "making her look bad" as if she doesnt wake up and choose to make the most diabolical choices each day
There's no need to wear so many layers of armor, babe. Stop trying to appear objective, and say I hate Azula, it's okay. I get you, you use your own headcanon to justify your personal preference aka hatred towards azula to glorify your baby zuko. Like you clearly care about Azula so much to the extent that you have to impose your own head canon or her and fantasizing a future for her. On the other hand, I do not give a single shit about zuzu and I have no preference for his future. Why not go to write and read some fanfiction you like? Have a nice day.
Lmfao yall are so delusional 🤣
1. Igaf about zuko
2. How am I trying to appear objective when my whole point is that im just give my subjective opinion
2. I see why yall defend her so much now. You're just as unstable as her lmfao. Also, way to prove my point, you have to bring up zuko so you have someone to tear do in a way that elevates azula. You're actually worse than jinx stans lol
I have a relatively successful life. Don't be so emotional. I'm worried about you.

Well, I have to say the original post reminds me of Hello Future Me, a youtuber who diagnosed Azula with a bunch of mental problems using DSM-5 manual, even though he had no degree in psychology🤣. Apart from this absurd video, he also uploaded another one last year titled "Unnecessary Redemption Arcs and the Rise of Character Laundering". For those who dislike Azula, his viewpoint should be quite representative.
I'm not coming here to spread hatred, but still, it would be nice for everyone to hear his perspective:
…I know this is going to be hurt, but characters are not people, they are tools, they are narrative representations of people, we can use them to say other things. Characters can exist as foils to others as symbolic representations of other ideas, their failures as morality tales, their actions and fates as important pieces of a greatest story being told. That can be the point they serve. Unlike us they don't exist in isolation free of overarching narrative following the bits and bobs of free will. They are not individuals but pieces of tapestry carefully woven together by the author to explore something else.
Azula's story isn't about a 14-year-old girl defeated by her brother Zuko for the throne, that's the plot. Azula is Zuko's character foil where she is ruthless and practical, Zuko is empathetic and emotional; where Azula is a prodiay, Zuko has to work painstakingly hard to achieve a fraction of her power and her flaws highlight Zuko's new strengths he discovers throughout the series, and vice versa Azula's fall is a reflection of how different parenting styles can affect a child. Ozai's
affection was something exchanged for being useful, something Azula will go on to do to her friends, whereas Iroh's affection came as something freely given with patience for imperfection and failure, traits which Zuko adopts. And crucially where Azula's ultimate fall comes from her cruelty and pride and rejection of friends and allies, it is Zuko's humility and kindness and friendship that ultimately wins the day. Him sacrificing his life for Katara, Katara bring Azula down and then her healing him. Azula ending up alone imprisoned isn't something happening to a real person, it is a deliberate narrative choice by the author to say something about how people like this isolate themselves and end up alone.
As far as I know, Atla is not a fable. The main purpose of its creation was not to preach. Contrast is a common technique in literary works, but Azula and Zuko is not a case of contrast. To merely interpret Azura as the foil of Zuko is a gross distortion. I have never seen a perfect work where the redemption of a good character necessarily comes at the expense of another character's irredeemability, or a good person must use a bad person to back up their noble qualities and highlight their good traits. This would only make me feel like the character portrayal is shallow and flat. If Azula must fall into the quagmire and never be able to rise again to highlight Zuko's glory, then his redemption arc might not be so powerful.
We're not here to play a zero-sum game, are we? I'm not quite interested in discussing the issue of double standards, but unfortunately, I often come across it in the atla fandom. Just getting a bit annoyed.
Why Azula Letting Her Hair Down, and *Not Cutting it, has so much meaning
I just saw a post saying that Azula’s short hair is release and Zuko’s short hair is rebirth and I didn’t want to reblog it because it was a lovely take and I know how I feel when people hop onto my posts with their own *unasked for* takes.
See, the thing is, Azula and Zuko both have tons of symbolism within their hair. But they symbolize different things. Azula’s hair symbolizes not just perfection, and acceptance, but emotion. Zuko’s hair actually symbolizes freedom. Think about it.
In season one, Zuko’s hair is one half long and the other shaved. Because Zuko is half away from his captor. See, the ponytail is like a rope. It’s the only piece of his hair, a symbolism of his honor. But in season one, Zuko ties restoration of his honor with being accepted back home in the fire nation.
At the start of season two, Zuko cuts his ponytail. He doesn’t know yet that he will one day rule the nation he yearns to be welcomed back into. This version of Zuko sees himself as a fugitive and not a prince trying to make his way back home, and we know that because he cuts his hair after Azula makes the little speech asking why their father would let him come home.
So, Zuko’s hair regrowing while he’s in the Earth Kingdom. It symbolizes him having freedom that he doesn’t quite understand to flourishing and making a place for himself within his newfound freedom. He makes such a place for himself that he needs to be convinced to return home. I’m not even talking about the crystal catacombs. In an official comic in between the seasons, Zuko doesn’t want to return home even after betraying Iroh. Azula sets him up on a date with Mai so he will follow love right past the Great Gates of Azulon and into the fire nation.
Now, Azula’s hair.
In the start of season two, Lo and Li critique Azula and a hair is out of place. She then says her famous line, “almost isn’t good enough.”
Despite Azula’s performance being almost perfect, it’s not enough for Azula to ignore the flaws she must have because she is human. For basically entirety of the show, Azula wears her hair in a loose, but neat bun. In that hairstyle contains Azula’s flaws. It also contains her empathy and emotions, but the importance of that is the fact that Azula sees emotion as a flaw.
We see Azula’s hair down about five times.
The first time Azula is shown with her hair down, she is in her bedroom trying to sleep. It’s actually in a ponytail. Azula doesn’t need to display perfection in her sleep. But anything can happen when she isn’t awake. She’s not quite relaxed even then.
The second time she is shown with her hair down, she’s just getting her hair washed and I can’t really think of anything behind that.
The third time we see Azula with her hair down, it’s very important from the styling to when it is shown. This is the Beach episode. Azula hasn’t been to Ember Island in years, she knows no one. The first day she arrives and plays Kuai Ball and meets Chan and Ruon Jian, her hair is in its usual style. Azula lets her hair down after deciding to drop her status as princess on this beach. She doesn’t act like a princess either by forcing Chan to talk to her or demanding people at the party pay attention to her. Azula’s hair is down, she is awkward and trying too hard and her flaws on on full display the first time her hair is down for a long duration of time. It’s still neat though, Azula is still showing what she wants to show. As the episode comes to a close, Azula shows us her Achilles heel, and there is loads of emotion in one sentence. As soon as she does, she quickly tries to pull the sock back up and change the subject.
The fourth time Azula’s hair is down, there is no styling to it. It is completely loose, and billowing in the wind. Now, Azula was just fine previous to falling into the air. She was falling to her death. The amount of emotion that would go through her is wild, and she definitely wasn’t looking to compose herself. She only smirked after securing her life. But she was most likely still running like a chicken with its head cut off in her mind.
The fifth, and most important time that Azula’s hair is down, is Sozin’s comet. In the novelization, Azula goes on about there is no one to do her hair and it’s a mess. Ozai is gone, and Azula would have had to contain herself in front of him for her safety. She has no friends or family to remain collected for. The exact reason why I don’t think Azula cutting her hair is release is because of the scene where she cuts her bangs. See, Azula cannot tame her hair(her emotions) and so she cuts it (tries to get rid of them). At the start of the Agni Kai, Azula’s hair is messy, but it’s tied. Halfway through, it is completely down. It is still down when she is chained to a grate and crying. See, she had flaws and emotions that she refused to express gently at different periods of time. Instead she bottled them up inside herself. (In her neat little bun). But they simply could not be contained and they exploded, causing her body and talent to fail her when she needed it most. (Causing her hair to look terrible on the day of her coronation).
Post finale Azula doesn’t acknowledge her emotions. Post redemption Azula shouldn’t run away from her emotions(cut her hair) but accept them and let them be (let her hair down).
Broke: demonizing Azula for the sake of a Zuko-centered plot.
Woke: demonizing Zuko for the sake of a Azula-centered plot.
Azula's Biggest Mistake
Tragedy in two frames.
This can even be used for social advertising. A well-behaved girl gets involved with an unprincipled young man and her life turns into hell.
