okay so I’m not sure where to put this, so I’m gonna air it here. I work as a special educator this year, same school I was at for five years. this year I’ve seen so much. I can own up to my part, I haven’t met all federal guidelines for deadlines to turn things in and I call out more frequently now than before. I also knew that this would be two jobs in one position as a caseload manager and teacher. the job my specific school is asking for, though, is impossible. I teach two classes (one is an 05 class and self-contained mixed together and the other is an 05 class), two personalized learning blocks (on A-Day/B-Day schedule), and do push-in/pull-outs for 7th and 8th grade ELA (or social studies if I can’t catch them in ELA), on top of caseload management. I tried expressing to the principal that I should be doing teaching + case management or services + case management, but not all three. she doesn’t understand and because the work is split unfairly amongst us, I’m the one who looks like I’m not doing what I’m “supposed” to be doing. I would rather they just give me one grade level (all subjects) than this random arbitrary split. Also, self contained should not be mixed in with the 05 class.
At my school 2 sped teachers split 6th grade case management and 2 sped teachers split 7th and 8th grade case management. No one else seems to do push-in/pull-out services outside of their teaching. This all feels violation-y, but they’re just focused on doing the paperwork. I’ll do the paperwork but I wanna do the WORK.
I haven’t found another job but I have to tell. I thought I could push for changes while still in this position, but it’s becoming toxic and I don’t think I’ll make it through another school year.
amen!!!!

looking in the mirror and repeating to myself over and over that at the end of the day this is my life and I have to do what’s best for me not what’s best for everyone else
You are no one’s backup plan. And you are not someone who sits around, comfortable being an option. Choose people who choose you, clearly.
