on occasion, dennis whitaker will ground himself with… the ground. growing up with hardwood floors, it wasn’t uncommon for him or his brothers to splay out on the floor to try to escape the summer heat. nowadays though, he just drops to the carpet of the apartment whenever he feels homesick.

the first time he was a little nervous, turning to trinity and asking, “hey, is it cool if i like… lay on the floor?”

“umm, sure? i don’t care, man.”

it becomes one of those behaviors of his that trinity deems slightly weird. eventually she gets used to it, and doesn’t even bat an eye when she has to step over him, sprawled across the kitchen floor, to get to the fridge. sometimes he falls asleep, most times it’s just for the comforting familiarity.

baran, however, does not have the same knowledge, and one afternoon, about 2 months into dating trinity, she opens the apartment door with trinity in tow carrying groceries. that’s when she finds dennis inexplicably laying loose-limbed along the living room floor.

immediately considering the worst, a habit she’s picked up since working at the pitt, she braces herself to face whatever may be wrong with him. looking back at trinity, she whispers, “don’t go in there… let me take care of this.” locking the door behind her, baran anxiously creeps towards dennis’s slack body.

confounded and worried, trinity sets down the bags and searches for the spare key under the mat. then, she cracks the door open to peek inside and sees the scene playing out. silently laughing to herself, she sneaks up behind baran, who’s about to check for a pulse, and gently tosses a loaf of bread at dennis. it lands right on his sternum, and he’s suddenly resurrected.

simultaneously, baran and dennis sigh out the words, “what the fuck.” baran out of confusion, dennis out of annoyance.

unable to hold her laughter back anymore, trinity starts heading to the hallway to get the rest of groceries, “we got white bread for the white boy!”

dennis groans out a thanks, and baran, trying to regain control of her breathing, flops down next to him on the floor.

Only been watching The Pitt for a few days but Mel King is THE best autistic character ever written in a medical drama. She doesn't "make connections no one else can" or "just see things differently" or any other Savant with Special Abilities stereotypical bullshit, she's a resident physician who's exactly as intelligent and capable as any other resident physician in the same year. She hates unnecessary yelling because it's loud and annoying, not because she's completely incapable of handling conflict. She usually keeps her stimming subtle enough to hide but sometimes she can't. She loves having a furry critter to pet. She accommodates an autistic patient by lowering the lights and closing the doors because she understands the sensory nightmare of an active medical setting. She speaks in a straightforward and honest way but she isn't an overtly rude inconsiderate asshole. She misses some jokes and takes things too literally on occasion but she does have a sense of humor and she is funny. She speaks up against misinformation and parent panic about autism and other developmental disabilities. She has emotions. She looks at a video of a lava lamp on her phone to chill. Doctor Mel King you have my entire heart

As an autistic person myself, it is amazing to see representation all across the spectrum but it is honestly so rare that we get an autistic person that isn’t babied all the time— let alone a WOMAN!!

According to the UCLA Health, up to 80% of women go undiagnosed by the age of 18. Women with autism are disproportionately undiagnosed thanks to misogyny rooted in the medical field and research. Not to mention that some doctors will simply dismiss autistic traits as other “hormonal outbursts” or they simply learn to mask it so well to blend in with others.

Mel King is such an icon and I am so glad to have her as genuinely good representation!! Mel is doing the best she can while still fighting to get her medical license and worrying about a younger sibling. She doesn’t have much of a support system so she simply makes do with what she has or uses her coping mechanisms to the best of her abilities!!

Dr. Mel King, you have my whole heart and soul!!!
