CHRONOLOGY -------- a reference , a timeline .
*** these dates are all based on david harbour’s current age (42) being hopper’s age in stranger things season 2. there’s a great possibility this isn’t the case though, especially considering the ages of the other actors of those who went to high school with hopper. dates are subject to change, but variation would likely only be 2-3 years earlier for all evens predating sara’s death, as that one is set in show canon. EDIT : while i’m still gonna leave this not here david did tweet confirming that hop was class of 1960, making many of the dates more solid.

1942 - born in hawkins, indiana. his family in these parts goes at least back to his grandfather.

1956-1960 - attended hawkins high school. we’re led to believe he was a bad boy of sorts: sneaking out of class to smoke on campus, "borrowing” his father’s car without permission, lying about his whereabouts for trysts with girls in his class.
his time in high school overlaps with that of joyce byers (at least an acquaintance, but david harbour confirmed that they dated in high school before joyce got with lonnie, i forget if they say it in the show though) and bob newby.
1964-1965 - hopper serves in the us military during the vietnam war, on his own accord (again, presumably. the only way hopper would have been apart of the draft is if he’s younger than david harbour, which is unlikely ).

1971 - hopper marries diane. the same year they move to “the big city.” hopper does police work there, it’s assumed he doesn’t visit hawkins much
mixed results on where “the big city” really is -- as far as i remember, they never say where in show canon. a box in the cabin is marked “new york city,” so thats a definite option, but i’m unsure.
again, this is presumed by the age of the actress at the time of filming stranger things season one.
diane and jim divorce shortly after (implied by mention of the seven years they spent together.
1979 - jim returns to hawkins.
its very soon upon his return that he’s offered the job of chief, due to his time spent on a much larger force in a much larger city.
much of his life in the city is left there: while it may slowly become general knowledge that he’s divorced, any information on sara is rare, restricted to those he’s close with (which isn’t many).
1983 - joyce byers sits in his office and reports her son missing.
HEADCANONED EVENTS ( CURRENTLY DATELESS ) :
his work on the police force in hawkins. i headcanon this to have started somewhere between his return from vietnam and his marriage to diane. he had held some position before moving to the city.
his father’s death. while headcanons on his parents are still being formed, and definitely subject to change, i headcanon jim’s father to have passed somewhere between his high school graduation and his tour in vietnam.
