Day Four: Dessert - The Reg, Waterford
We headed back toward Reginald’s Tower to get drinks and dessert at a bar called The Reg. We shared ice cream, an apple tart, and sticky toffee pudding while listening to live music. Kat and Em were determined to get a fun cocktail and fortunately the bartender liked making mixed drinks and was willing to look up how to make them. So the two of them ended up with very tasty grasshoppers, which ended in lots of giggles and failed pictures.
Day Four: Dinner - Geoff's Bar, Waterford
That night for dinner, we went to Geoff’s Bar. Emily had a rum and coke with her stir-fry and Kat had a Bulmer’s cider with hers. Bruce got a burger and fries while Bev had salmon on a bed of couscous. The food was very good, but we still had room for dessert.
Day Four: Reginald's Tower, Waterford
Our third museum of the day was Reginald’s Tower, which dates back to the 900s when Vikings built the first tower on that site. The tower was rebuilt by the Anglo Normans in the 12th century, the top two floors were added in the 15th century, and the tower was used as the strong point of a medieval defensive wall the enclosed the city until 1700. We toured the tower and learned tons about Viking history in Ireland and got to see Viking artifacts, like a model of Viking Waterford, games, tools, and weapons. We also learned that the cannon ball stuck in the side of the tower was from Oliver Cromwell’s siege of Waterford in 1650 and that Waterford was the only city not captured by Cromwell himself.
Day Four: Bishop's Palace, Waterford
Bishop’s Palace was built in 1741 and was the residence of the Church of Ireland Bishop of Waterford. Now it is a museum that tells the history of Waterford from the 1700s to 1970s. We decided to do an audio tour here, so all of us wandered through the beautiful building while listening to stories about the people who lived there over the years and seeing all sorts of pieces of furniture and housewares that survived. Some of the things we saw on our tour included the oldest surviving piece of Waterford Crystal, oil paintings of distinguished local families, and the dinning table set with early 19th century Waterford Crystal dishes.
Day Four: Medieval Museum, Waterford
The tour began with a spiral staircase leading down to the Chorister’s Hall, which were two preserved medieval chambers built in the 1270s. Our tour guide, dressed in period clothing, gave us the history surrounding the artifacts in the museum, including brooches, pilgrim badges, and the Great Charter Roll of Waterford that consists of illustrations and Irish history from when Henry II, the first English king to come to Ireland, to Edward III, the king on the throne when the scroll was created. One of the most impressive relics in the museum was the Cloth of Gold Vestments. These vestments, dating back to the 1460s, were made from Italian silk and embroidered with scenes from the bible. They are the only full set of medieval vestments to survive in Northern Europe. There was so much fascinating history that we learned at the museum and it was astounding to see artifacts that were almost a thousand years old, when we are so used to American history where things happened only a few centuries ago.
Day Four: Lunch - Waterford Crystal Cafe, Waterford
After our tour and walk around the gift shop, we ate lunch at the Cafe inside the Waterford Crystal building. Emily got the vegetable soup with a savory scone, Kat and Bev got the chicken salad that also came with a scone, and Bruce had pancakes and bacon along with a very tasty hot chocolate.
Day Four: House of Waterford Crystal, Waterford
We began our adventures in Waterford by going to the famous House of Waterford Crystal. The tour took us through the many stages of how they create beautiful vases, bowls, trophies and more. Most of the production of the regular pieces of Waterford Crystal are done out of Ireland in another part of Europe, while only specialty orders and sports trophies are still created in the original factory. Waterford Crystal is unique in that the blown glass is shaped using wooden molds, so that the pieces are as perfect as possible. The workers were amazing and gave us a closer look at the pieces right after they came out of the molds and were still extremely hot, and the carvers stopped their work to show and explain to us what they were doing. The people working there had to go through a long apprenticeship before focusing on a specific task, and most of the craftsmen had been working there for thirty to forty years, or more. After the pieces were molded and cooled, it took several steps to get to the finished product, including smoothing out the rough initial piece, carving the designs (which was very impressive to see as the craftsmen only used simple grids and lines to guide their work), and then the final polishing. It was awesome to see all the work put into each piece being made, plus we were lucky enough to have a fun tour guide and the chance to hold a crystal football.
Day Four: Breakfast - Costa Coffee, Waterford
Our fourth day began with a light breakfast in the center of Waterford. Costa Coffee was a cute little shop, similar to Starbucks, with lots of lovely pastries. We got hot chocolate and tea to accompany our tasty muffins and croissants.
Day Three: Dinner - Granville Hotel, Waterford
Due to our long day in Kilkenny, we did not arrive in Waterford until late in the evening and had to wander for some time before we came across a local man who told us of a restaurant that was still open. We ate at the Granville Hotel right on the River Suir. Bruce ate the prime Irish beef burger, Bev had the oven roasted chicken and a whiskey sour, Kat had the chicken curry and a tequila sunrise, while Emily ordered the Cajun chicken wrap and a margarita. For dessert, we shared profiteroles (cream puffs) and an apple tart. Our dinner and drinks were accompanied by an Irish band, which was playing too much American music for our taste, so we requested a few Irish songs.
Day Three: Round Tower, Kilkenny Outside of St. Canice’s Cathedral was the Round Tower that was built during the time of he Viking raids and dates back to the mid 9th century, making it the oldest standing structure in Kilkenny. We climbed up the 121 “stairs”, which were more like increasingly steep ladders, to the top where we could see an amazing 360° view of the city.
Day Three: St. Canice's Cathedral, Kilkenny On our way over to St. Canice's Cathedral we walked through the Butter Slip, a narrow little lane built in 1616 where butter vendors set up their stalls. It looked like something right out of Harry Potter. Then we came to St. Canice’s Catherdral, which sat on the top of a hill over looking Kilkenny. It had beautiful stained glass and vaulted ceilings, as well as carved statues and tombs. Interestingly, the cathedral is the resting place of President Obama’s six-generation granduncle, Bishop John Kearney.
Day Three: Dessert - The Tea Room in the Kilkenny Castle, Kilkenny We ended our wandering through the castle in the tea room. They had so many tasty looking desserts it was hard to choose what to get. We ended up getting a piece of chocolate cake and a caramel square to share and Bev, Kat and Em got some tea. It was all very delicious and the little tea room was very cute.
Day Three: Kilkenny Castle, Kilkenny After lunch we made our way over to the Kilkenny Castle. The outside of the castle was beautiful. The garden was huge and had a large selection of pretty flowers. The inside was just as amazing.
Day Three: Lunch - Kyteler’s Inn, Kilkenny
On the third morning we packed up and headed out of Dublin. We arrived in Kilkenny around lunch time and we decided to go into the first place we saw. The entrance was a stone archway that lead to an outdoor bar. Inside there was more seating in a dark dungeon like room. The food was delicious even though you needed the flash of a camera to see it properly. Bruce had a turkey club sandwich, Beverly had a quiche, Kat had fried cheese and Emily had veggie spring rolls.

Day Two: Traditional Irish Music Pub Crawl, Dublin
After dinner we headed over to Oliver St. John Gogarty's Pub for our Traditional Irish Music Pub Crawl. We checked in and then waited around the second floor of the pub for everyone to show up. Then our leaders Eugene and Antony introduced themselves and then we sang along to Johnny Jump Up. Then we all gathered outside and made our way over to the Ha'penny Bridge Inn. Bev had a Kopparberg Pear Cider and Kat and Emily got the Kopparberg Strawberry Lime Cider. They were both really good. There we learned about the difference between jigs and reels and the types of traditional and adopted instruments used in Irish music. The music was wonderful and the two men leading the crawl were incredibly talented and really funny. After about 45 min we headed over to Brannigan's Bar on Cathedral St. The three ladies all got some Bailey’s and the music continued. It was a wonderful end to a fantastic day!
Day Two: Dinner - Fitzsimons, Dublin
After dessert we headed back to the hotel to get ready for dinner. We went back to the Temple Bar area and found Fitzsimons. The food was wonderful and the music was really fun! Bruce had a hamburger, Bev had stuffed eggplant, Kat had a beef casserole with mashed potatoes and Em had a cheese plate.
