14. an ‘i’m sorry’ kiss.
Being dragged away from Kyouko was always hard.
Not just for Weiss, of course. In fact, she’d argue their moments of separation took a harsher toll on her partner than herself.
They’d always end up together once more in the end- Weiss knew that. Kyouko knew that. But it didn’t fail to strain their relationship, to strain Kyouko more than anything. The detective was frail- she was afraid of being left alone. She was vulnerable. She needed that constant presence no matter what, and Weiss knew that.
She could already faintly smell cigarette smoke and whisky in the wind as she approached their home- welcoming and familiar despite the year she spent away from it. Her heart started to hammer in her chest as she stepped up and towards their front door. She already had apologies resting on the tip of her tongue. She knew to expect tears or worse from all of this.
Intentional or not, she’d hurt Kyouko. She knew she had. No part of her was going to deny that.
She was past playing the victim.
Her knuckled lightly rapped against their front door and a familiar wailing meow sounded from behind it. She could hear light scratching at the wood on the other side, the mews and cries of Dupin growing louder and more frantic. She couldn’t help but smile a little. Of course he wouldn’t forget her. Of course he’d be happy to see her. She missed him too, of course.
She joked about him being Kyouko’s baby all the time, but she knew better than to say that. Dupin was her baby as well. The first cat they’d raised together, in fact.
Her heart nearly leaped into her throat when a groggy voice sounded from the other side of the door and the knob began to jiggle and twist. She took a step back, drew in a slow breath, and lifted her eyes from her feet. The tired gaze that met her made her heart sink.
“… Kiri.” She spoke softly, a smile playing at the corners of her mouth. The detective’s face had defaulted to an iron mask- though she had a sinking suspicion she was feeling a lot more than she was letting on. Weiss wasn’t a moron. She knew hurt when she saw it in someone else’s eyes. The heavy silence that fell between them was uncomfortable- with tension thick enough to cut clean through.
The silence and stillness soon came to an abrupt stop as a soft, tell-tale whimper rose in the back of Kyouko’s throat. Weiss saw tears. She saw the detective’s face contorting and the mask falling down. She could already hear her breaths heaving in the beginnings of small sobs. She stepped forward then, a hand coming to her partner’s cheek to brush away whatever tears were present. She felt her own throat constrict when the detective seemed to lean into that touch almost desperately- nuzzling into her palm like her life depended on it.
“I’m sorry.” She breathed her words out softly, as if not to startle Kyouko. Even whispering seemed to run the risk of that. Their noses brushed and Weiss propped herself up on her tip-toes. She pressed her lips against the other’s in a fleeting kiss. They were chapped, and tasted of tobacco and alcohol, but she didn’t mind. Not in the slightest.
Her arms gingerly looped around Kyouko, lightly tugging her closer and in for a proper embrace. The kiss broke off again and Weiss was content to press her forehead against her lover’s instead, looking her in the eyes.
“I’m here, okay?” Her own voice shook as she spoke. “I’m here. And I’m not going away any time soon. I promise.”
