This will make zero sense because it started out as a bizarre nap dream.
Cue the long summary/story map!
Yuuri and Phichit stumble upon a child hiding by the bushes of a fancy resort; they won a graduation raffle prize and have a week to enjoy luxury before heading off to the real world. Little Yuri immediately recognizes Yuuri from a play he went to see with his mother in which Yuuri played a questing hero – and being only four, he imagines his wish upon a star must have brought Yuuri to help him on this very important adventure to rescue his mother and his grandfather. Worried for the child, Yuuri convinces Phichit that they should stick by him and figure out a plan to turn Yuri over to the police or protective services, but when Yuri hears them, he starts pulling away from them, obviously determined to run again. So, Yuuri promises Yuri that they will figure out how to help him and sneak him into the venue for now.
“I’m here for Viktor Nikiforov,” Yuri explains, holding a little piece of paper tight in his fist. He lets Phichit feed him some food between telling them a grandiose story in which his family is in trouble and he just knows he needs to help them: “I followed him here. My mama said if anything bad ever happened to her, I should find Viktor. I think some bad men took my mama, and now they’ve taken my grandpa, too. But I know Viktor can help! He can do anything!”
It’s not a secret that Viktor’s ego is probably the size of the moon, given the music videos he makes on the regular. Viktor Nikiforov is a living legend with more security around him than the president – so how exactly does this little boy expect to get near him? And why? Yuuri takes a long look at Yuri’s blond hair and face and begins to wonder: Could Yuri be VikNik’s kid?
As soon as Yuuri and Phichit get Yuri to take a nap, they manage to check the little piece of paper he had in his hand.
“It’s an email,” Yuuri whispers as he reads over the little piece of paper. He watches as Phichit rummages through the sleeping kid’s backpack and finds a wrinkled enveloped, unopened, and addressed to “Vitya.”
“How are we going to help him if we don’t open it?”
“If we find Viktor Nikiforov and the letter is open, he might think we tampered with it.”
“You don’t seriously think Viktor Nikiforov knows this kid, do you? Chances are high his mom got catfished by someone online, or it’s a different Viktor Nikiforov. He can’t be the only one with that combination of names!”
And Yuuri has no idea, but he does want to help Yuri – and maybe if they find Viktor, then they can all convince Yuri that he needs to get help from the authorities.
Meanwhile, Viktor Nikiforov is definitely staying at this super fancy resort and has probably experienced something akin to love at first sight watching this gorgeous guy check-in while drinking tea at the VIP lounge. Too bad even here surrounded by rich people, he has to keep a low profile – but that doesn’t mean he can’t be in strategic locations and… why exactly is his hottie sneaking in a kid into the resort?
Well, cue Yuuri and Phichit trying to be sneaky. But since they’re already in the resort, no one is really bothered they have a kid with them, and they come up with a crazy storyline that they’re Yuri’s nannies and the kid is one of the mega rich enjoying a vacation until his parents get to the hotel (which turns out to be a pretty normal thing somehow.) So, anyway, they go living their best lives and trying to figure out if Viktor Nikiforov even really is at the resort. And they’re not having much luck. But then they go to the pool and are trying to figure out how to get Viktor’s attention when Yuri just kind of runs off. Yuuri and Phichit follow suit and find Yuri has stumbled upon VikNik and his wall of bodyguards, and well: “Viktor Nikiforov! You’re Viktor!”
“It’s fine, let him through,” Viktor tells his people, “the other two as well.”
And so Yuuri, Yuri, and Phichit end up in a tent with Viktor Nikiforov.
“Commemorative photo? An autograph? Always happy to meet a fan,” he tells little Yuri, who upon seeing him turns bright red and starts crying. He practically slams his body against Viktor and sobs hard.
“Do you know this kid?” Yuuri asks him immediately, pulling out the little piece of paper with an email on it and handing it to him. “He’s been looking for you. He says you know his mom. She told him if anything happened, he should find you.”
Viktor is like, wait, hold up, what? When he reads the email, he blinks in confusion. “Maybe we should talk in private?” – So, they all end up in Viktor’s suite, where Yuri tries to explain what happened based on his four-year-old logic, which means it isn’t very reliable, as he doesn’t quite know what happened. One day, his mom was with him; the next, she was carded off, and he was left with his grandpa. But then, another day, his grandpa was gone, and there was a woman in a suit trying to take him away, but he ran instead. Viktor listens patiently.
“You can rescue my mom, right, Viktor?”
“I—I don’t know that I can, Yuri,” he whispers.
Yuuri hugs the little boy and whispers, “did your mom give you anything else?”
So, they find the letter together and hand it to Viktor, who opens it and: “It’s written in Russian.” He then connects the pieces together, between the email address and the letter’s contents. And, in the interim, thankfully, Yuri has fallen asleep again, so they let him rest, and Viktor explains everything. Almost eight years ago, he’d been feeling particularly lonely and stumbled into a fan chat room and befriended Yuri’s mom. They used to write to each other via email often and eventually he revealed his identity and they continued being friends. When she was in financial trouble, he’d helped her. But then he'd lost the password to the email address and hadn’t been able to hear from her again. When he’d attempted a visit, she had moved.
“She wanted me to take him,” he explains. “She knew she was dying and had no one else to take him. Thankfully, his grandpa was able to take him for a bit, but I imagine something tragic happened there, too.”
Cue Viktor calling his people to figure out more and if he can even get custody. When Yuri wakes up, Yuuri is prepared to tell him the truth, but Viktor stops him and says, “I’ve got my people on the job! We’ll figure out what happened and help you get your mom back.” The wording is definitely irresponsible. Yuri is confident in Viktor’s abilities, but he doesn’t know Viktor, so he sticks really close to Yuuri and Phichit.
Jump to Yuuri and Viktor parenting Yuri together at the resort – and Viktor and Yuuri getting closer to each other, even as they try to figure out when the right moment is to tell Yuri the truth. Viktor wants to wait to hear from his people if he can keep Yuri, as that may soften the blow. Yuuri understands they must proceed carefully to avoid risking Yuri running away again.
Finally, Viktor’s people explain that Viktor could adopt Yuri (look, this is a fictional world, let it happen), but question whether it is a good PR move or general life move, seeing as he is supposed to ramp up on publicity for some projects.
Yuri, being the little boy he is, overhears the conversation and realizes that he’s been lied to – Viktor isn’t going to find his mom, just take him, and doesn’t even want to have him around. He tries to run away, but Yuuri spots him in the lobby and carries him back. He and Viktor finally explain everything to Yuri, who is obviously heartbroken and asks Yuuri if – since Viktor doesn’t want him – he’ll take him.
Viktor explains he absolutely wants to take care of Yuri. And they spend time convincing the little boy and so that gets settled – Yuri has a new family! The week comes to an end and it is time for Yuuri to leave. Viktor asks him if he’d like to stay longer with them. Phichit encourages him to say yes, but Yuuri is a bit bothered that playing house can’t be good for Yuri’s feelings of stability – and he doesn’t want to put Viktor on the spot to feel like he has to play along.
Viktor is hella smitten, so this isn’t games. He was hoping Yuuri felt the same.
When Yuuri turns down his offer, he puts his cards out on the table – and claims he understands if Yuuri has no interest in being saddled with his mess of a life and now a kid. Yuuri counters that he is super interested, but also would like some proper dating before they jump into, well, making things permanent. So, Yuuri still leaves, but it’s obvious he’s going to see Viktor and Yuri again.
Jump to years later and Viktor and Yuuri are planning a wedding, with little Yuri helping them. All of them also now have Makkachin, who is a boisterous puppy. They also find where Yuri’s mom and grandpa are buried and take him to visit so Yuri can introduce his family to his additional family.
