Pageants, Pageants and Pageants
A question I get frequently is “what do you get out of doing pageants”?
At the start of it all back in 2016, when i competed for the Miss Maryland USA 2017 title, it simply was just because “my mom told me to find a way to win a scholarship”. I didn’t but I walked away with a huge sense of accomplishment. I had one month to prepare due to finding out about it so late in the game that I emptied out my savings, had multiple study lessons with my mom and youtube, watched all I could on the Miss USA and Miss Universe organization, and put on the best smile I could because I knew I was meant to wear that crown.
I didn’t win. In fact, I didn’t even make the semi-finals. I cried— silently but passionately. Not for the sake that I didn’t walk away with a crown but because the feeling I felt on that stage was incomparable to anything I’ve ever felt before. I felt like I found something that connected me to something bigger than my dreams (at the time) could have ever imagined.
So, what do I get from participating in pageants?
The chance to say “I did that” and the people I will continue to meet. Because the biggest regret I will never have is saying “I wish I did it”.
