WATCH Sea Urchins Pull Themselves Inside Out to be Reborn 

Conceived in the open sea, tiny spaceship-shaped sea urchin larvae search the vast ocean to find a home.  After this incredible odyssey, they undergo one of the most remarkable transformations in nature.

Wow, that’s quite the journey for those little sea urchin larvae!

Urchin teeth actually inspired the design for this space exploration device at UC San Diego:

A pink sea urchin’s mouth is made of five curved teeth with triangle-shaped tips and intricate muscles. These teeth can scrape, cut, chew and dig holes into the toughest rocks.

Researchers at UC San Diego used this as inspiration for their tool. It can be used to grab rocks and soil samples for space vehicles like the Mars Rover.
