“Cyanotypes of British and Foreign Ferns” Created by 19th Century BFF’s This is the title page of a unique presentation album of 100 cyanotype fern images created together by two 19th Century BFF’s, Anna Atkins and Ann Dixon. In 1853 (England), the same year the two woman created the album, Ann gifted it to her nephew. It was passed to his niece, then to “The Girls Friendly Society” in Paris and finally it was sold to the Getty Museum in 1984. Now the album of cyanotype ferns is an American treasure and a historic symbol of creative friendship. 36” x 36” Cyanotype Freesia print on a white silk charmeuse scarf, printed in 2006 (and still just as vibrant + fanciful as the day it was made). This scarf was created using my favorite flower, Freesia. The modeling of the background was created through “solarizing” — a common term used in photographic printmaking: meaning to first do a short exposure of your scarf without anything on it, then place your flowers on it and expose it a second time. The scarf was solarized for 10 minutes and exposed again with flowers for 20 minutes. Creating two prints on one surface; giving the print a foreground and a background. This is a 20”x26” Andy Warhol style print of Susan’s (Store owner) beautiful and hip mother — in 1965 — on lime paper. It was originally a 2x3 photograph, that I was able to reproduce on a negative transparency to make this print. A wonderful and nostalgic way to celebrate your mother for this upcoming holiday. 18” x 24” Cyanotype print on rice paper; made with our Art & Science Kit (quart) Cyanotype solution was painted onto rice paper, then laid leaves down and exposed it with a single tube UV bulb, exposing only the center part of the paper for 10 minutes. The faded light and leaves give the image an Asian flare that matches the delicate nature of the rice paper. And the love of balancing positive and negative space gives this print a sense of 3 dimensional depth.
