If a woman writes about herself, she’s a narcissist. If a man does the same, he’s describing the human condition.

Benedict Cumberbatch Breaks His Silence on CBS' Elementary: 'I'd Be Frightened'
If I were the [producer], I’d be frightened of the dynamic of male friendship that you’d lose,” he confesses to TVLine, “because that is obviously the bedrock of the books as well. [Now] there might be sexual tension between Joan [Holmes] and Sherlock, which is [a different dynamic than you’d have] between the two men. So, that’s a new thing to explore.”
“I wish them luck, I really do,” the actor insists. “I think it will be great. It will be a different spin on it, because obviously, theirs is modern-day as well, so it needs to be different from ours, and I think the more differences, the better, to be honest.
“I don’t see why they shouldn’t co-exist with us,” he adds, “I don’t think they’ll steal our audience. I think people who are Holmes fans who think they do a good job of it will have a treat in watching ours and the films. So I wish them good luck!”
- Benedict Cumberbatch
Remember when Lucy Liu said that Joan and Sherlock would have a different chemistry and the Pressed Sherlock Fans called her homophobic?
HMM… I WONDER IF THE SAME THING WILL HAPPEN TO BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH. Because here he is out and out saying that changing Watson into a woman introduces sexual tension that isn’t there when Watson is a man.
(Spoiler alert: The same thing won’t happen. Because all hail the white man who is half of the Pressed Sherlock Fan’s favorite queer baiting ship.)
Also, Benedict can fuck right off with his glorification of male-male friendships.
why did cucumberpatch even have to say the first part at all? fucking hell…
But time… how time first grounds us and then confounds us. We thought we were being mature when we were only being safe. We imagined we were being responsible but we were only being cowardly. What we called realism turned out to be a way of avoiding things rather than facing them. Time… give us enough time and our best-supported decisions will seem wobbly, our certainties whimsical.
Julian Barnes, The Sense of an Ending (via saisonlune)

I think one of the most important things to remember about writing is that your audience may not consider the people you think are meaningful to be the most valuable part of your story: that they may relate to side-characters, maybe even more than to the leads. And therefore it’s also important to remember that this is not just okay but good, that when you reach people with things you didn’t expect to that you are still reaching them; that characters should be treated with respect regardless of how minor they are, that they’re the heroes of their own stories whether or not they’re the hero of the story you’re telling.
speaking of sexist interviews
i don’t think anything will ever top helen mirren’s sexist interview back in 1975 when she basically rips everyone a new fucking asshole in the classiest way ever
