Pantalone has come to learn how much he loves the rain.
When the rain had first started, he had been shocked, standing on a balcony with his third cigarette for the evening. When a water droplet had hit Pantalone’s fingertips, and quelled the flame at the end of his stick with a sizzle, he had thought that the ice around him had melted somehow… but no. No, when he had looked up, he had realized the drop had come from the heavens themselves, and more had come with it, splattering across his cheeks, the lenses of his glasses, his hair.
He had rushed inside, back into the halls of the palace, worried of his clothes getting soiled from the sudden downpour. Despite his annoyance with suddenly feeling too damp, he found that it was short-lived and swallowed by another emotion.
Pure, complete curiosity.
He’s only known the freezing, raging snow of Snezhnaya, his region far too cold for anything less solid. He’s had his share of snowstorms, blizzards, ice, hail. But never the drizzle, or the pounding of rain.
Or the rumbling of thunder. When it had first crackled to life, with a bright flash of lightning, Pantalone had jumped, startled. He had paused his journey back to his chambers to look outside, and wait for the sound.
And it had come again. A flash of light, distant this time, and the sound of rumbling seconds after. That, that is what truly intrigued Pantalone. The impending danger, the crackle of electricity, the rolling of dark, heavy clouds above the large pines. He watches with awe, and his hand touches the cold glass, as if to be closer, to merge with the sky’s tears as it streaks across the window.
The thunder is… it’s terrifying, yes, yet so, so comforting.
Pantalone is brought out of his mesmerized trance when the sound of hurried footsteps, the click of heavy heels on tile, approaches. All too familiar, all too confusing. His attention is drawn to the sound, and he turns his head to see exactly who he had expected.
