I was commissioned for a photography shoot for a well-to-do Toronto financial planner’s daughter’s upcoming wedding. The idea was to document the events preparing for, and leading up to the wedding and subsequent reception. All in all, it was a lovely and delightful experience. The client’s home was well-appointed, and immaculately maintained, surrounded by landscaping that took one’s breath away. At first, the friends, family and staff were a little stand-offish. I assumed it was because I was, literally, a stranger invading their most intimate and private of spaces. I later learned that the initial reticence was because they were uncertain of how I viewed the current state of American politics. When it became clear that I loathed the current administration and all that it stood for, then tension visibly eased. Once the guidelines were established, everything went smoothly, for which I was, and am, grateful. What disturbed me, however, is the depth of anger and puzzlement our Canadian neighbors are feeling. After decades of harmonious, mutually beneficial relations, they simply cannot understand why their southern neighbors have embraced an ideology that is at once so toxic and so vindictive. They simply cannot understand how rational, intelligent people can stomach the barbarity they see reported in the news day after day. I had no answers; no reasonable explanation; no justifiable defense. For once in my life, I was thoroughly and completely ashamed to name myself a United States citizen. I can only hope that this nightmare ends, and that it ends soon.
