"There's no need to pretend." / from rita to dex !
RITA BENNETT, the woman that you are is not one the man that is DEXTER MORGAN could ever be deserving of. And yet he remains, telling himself it's all a ruse - that his chest, which heaves so much with bloodlust and with the PASSENGER'S INTENT, makes it so he cannot love - but then turns around and wishes, deeply, for the very few words extended his way to have held any truth at all.
No need to pretend. If only. DEXTER MORGAN is a creature of pretense - a master at it, by his own standards. He can't. He won't. Not when she believes he's a GOOD MAN. Laughable at best, of course, but something which aches at the hollowness in him.
Harry voices, behind her, discontent with her words, shaking his head at Dexter and telling him no, SON, with who you are there is always a need.
And so he looks at Rita, eyes struck to hers, and PRETENDS, amplifying the affection in his eyes and the softness of his tone as he presses their foreheads and tells her "You're right, Rita. There's never a need to pretend with you." in a perfect imitation of relief. As he does, that chest tightens just a smidgen, but enough for him to notice and CONTROL his brows before they furrow to the sentiment.
