Shaykh ibn ‘Uthaymeen رحمه الله said,
“With great regret [I say this], many people display good manners in front of people yet they do not behave in the same manner towards their family.”
Kitāb ul-‘Ilm | Page 180 | Shaykh ibn ‘Uthaymeen
"Many young people become more interested in the Sunnah than they are in the explanation of the Qur’an. And there is no doubt that this is a shortcoming since the Qur’an is more deserving of one’s attention than the Sunnah, for the Qur’an as Allah describes it is
تِبْيَانًا لِّكُلِّ شَيْءٍ
"a clarification of everything" [16:89]
And the Qur’an is a authoritative source which no one can dispute, while the Sunnah comes at a second rank after the Qur’an.
And there is no doubt that giving attention to the Sunnah is also a form of giving attention to the Qur’an, for the Sunnah explains, clarifies, supports and speaks about the Qur’an. However, the place where this shortcoming comes in is when one devotes their entire attention and turns their entire focus to the Sunnah without giving due attention to the Qur’an and the wonderful messages it contains.
So, it is my opinion that students should begin their studies firstly with the tafsir of the Qur’an before anything else, then move on to the Sunnah, and then to what the scholars have written regarding issues of ‘aqeedah and other topics.
Also, it is well-known that understanding the meanings of the Qur’an requires certain prerequisites and tools such as knowledge of Arabic and other such things so that a person can engage with the tafsir of the Qur’an and understand it how it is meant to be understood"
—Shaykh al-Uthaymeen'

Response to the question "This is a general observation, and you, sheikh Muhammad, mentioned that you teach tafsir, but many of the youth think that there is a lack of attention given to tafsir by many scholars. What is your opinion about this statement?
