A few years ago a roommate abruptly decided to move out to live with her boyfriend, and I ended up spending half a year sharing an apartment with someone I had never met before: an Egyptian girl with very limited English.

She was confused by my appearance and asked me “boy or girl?” It took me a while to understand what she was saying, but eventually she got the point across, and I told her that I was a girl. She seemed unsatisfied, and I explained that I was transgender. Unsurprisingly, she didn’t know the word.

We ended communicating by typing our respective sentences into Google Translate. Unfortunately, whatever the Arabic word for “transgender” is, it wasn’t a word she knew either. Eventually I ended up typing in “I used to be a boy but it made me unhappy so I decided to be a girl.” She stared at it for a moment then asked “You are happy now?” I said yes, and she smiled and looked thoughtful.

A couple hours later she came up to me and said “You and me, we are sisters,” and gave me a hug. “You say you are girl, you are girl.”

For people NOT in my fandoms, Groot is a plant-based alien (Flora Colossus from Planet X). My headcanon is the traits most aliens associate with autism are the norm for Flora Colossi, so it’s their ‘neurotypical’. Groot has a harder time in places like cities, prisons and space ports because it goes against what his brain is made for.

The Doctor looks human, but is an immortal alien (Gallifreyan Time Lord / Time Lady / Time Person) with two hearts who lives so long by regenerating their entire body. This is so any actor can be the Doctor, which allowed the Doctor Who franchise carry on for 50+ years. My headcanon for the Doctor is their autistic traits change each time they regenerate since autism affects each incarnation uniquely.

I can only speak to Autism Isn’t a Tragedy (though I’m sure the same can be said for their others fics,) but please please PLEASE go read it! It is one my favorite Groot (and Rocket) fanfic series of all time. Not only is it profoundly emotional and well written but @butterflyinthewell weaves Groot and Rocket’s cannonical personalities with impeccable wit while also adding more dimension, introspection and originality to them using the head-cannon that Groot is autistic and Rocket has his own challenges with PTSD and other behavioral issues. (Note: as a nuerotypical person please correct me if I am using works like “issues” or “challenges” inappropriately). The stories in this series range from funny to tragic, I haven’t felt this moved by a fic in a long time. More than anything Autism Isn’t a Tragedy exemplifies the very reason I love transformative work so much. Butterfly uses these beloved characters as…..templates…blueprints? Infusing their own lived experiences and emotions into them both with beauty and truly makes it their own.
