Honor a nurse who has touched your life! Nominate a Nurse for March of Dimes 2013 Nurse of the Year Awards Compassion for patients, leadership in quality and patient safety and a role model in the health care setting; these are just a few of the qualities that describe great nurses. From the very youngest of patients in newborn intensive care units to the elderly in hospice, nurses protect o...ur health, work to prevent injury, alleviate suffering and advocate for our care. Nurse of the Year Awards are a way to say thank you and honor selflessness, dedication and passion for the profession of nursing. Nurses will be recognized at third annual Nurse of the Year Awards in Miami on November 22, 2013. Who Should be Nominated: A nurse or nursing student who demonstrates excellence in the practice of nursing by providing care, comfort, and support to patients in various healthcare settings. Registered nurses, nurse midwives, nurse practitioners, licensed practical nurses, and students who work in Miami-Dade or Monroe counties are eligible. Who Can Nominate: Patients, co-workers, supervisors, other health professionals, former nominees and friends can nominate a nurse in one of 15 categories. Self nominations are also encouraged. Dade Medical College Students in the Field: Yuly Barros

Yuly Barros graduated from Dade Medical College (DMC) in 2010, and after interning at Miami Children’s Hospital, she landed a job at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital (JDCH)—where she has been working as a Pediatric Echo Technician for almost three years now. At JDCH, Yuly works at the Pediatric Heart Station where, she said, “We scan little babies with congenital heart disease when they are born and after surgery.” She loves what she does because, in her field, she gets to work with a great group of people and also has the opportunity of learning something new every single day.

About her experience at DMC, Yuly said it was wonderful in every aspect. “All my professors were amazing, always available to answer questions and help students.” Originally from Venezuela, she will be forever grateful to her professors for helping her build a new future in this country.

When asked about what advice she’d give to DMC’s Ultrasound students, because she was once in their place, Yuly said, “Study hard; Don't study just to pass a test—and then you just need to be smart enough to see the opportunities in front of you. Always, always do your best.”

Mary Rodriguez, Corporate Director of Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound and Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography programs at DMC, said, “Yuly was an amazing student. She had the initiative to walk into Joe DiMaggio Hospital looking for employment before having taken any part of a registry. They were so impressed with Yuly that they hired her that same day. Soon after, Yuly passed both parts of her exams and is now registered in Pediatric Echo with the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS). We are so proud of her; she is a role model and perfect example for students seeking employment when we explain to them that they must also ‘sell themselves’ rather than just apply for jobs on the internet.”

DMC's first annual sensational Haitian cook-off

Students: DMC's first annual sensational Haitian cook-off takes place on Wednesday the 22nd at the West Palm Beach campus. The Hollywood campus will host theirs on Thursday the 23rd. All students are encouraged to bring a Haitian-inspired dish in celebration of Haitian heritage month.

Ernesto Perez Appointed to Jackson Memorial Foundation Board of Directors

Recently, the Jackson Memorial Foundation appointed Ernesto Perez, Dade Medical College’s President and CEO, as the newest member of the group’s Board of Directors. “I believe in the great work that the Jackson Health System has done for South Florida and I am pleased to be in a position to give back to the organization as member of the Foundation’s Board,” said Perez. “I am honored to be a part of the team and look forward to using my contacts and experience in the health and education fields in order to take the mission of the Jackson Memorial Foundation forward.”

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand visits Dade Medical College

On March 28th, 2013, United States Senator from New York, Kirsten Gillibrand, paid Dade Medical College’s (DMC) Miami campus a visit. Senator Gillibrand was sworn into office in 2009, and since then she has worked on, amongst other things, putting middle class and working families first by making quality childcare and higher education more affordable.

Senator Gillibrand engaged in a lively question and answer session with students from the Nursing, Medical Assistant and Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound programs about their personal experiences at DMC, why they chose the college and how their experiences at DMC have helped them grow. Students also asked her how she got her start in politics, to which she responded that her grandmother was a huge political influence on her, always having worked within the legislature as a secretary. 

Raul Mendez, Chief Operations Officer at DMC said, “It was a great pleasure to have had the honor to host Senator Gillibrand from New York at our Miami Campus and demonstrate firsthand the importance of what Dade Medical College is doing to educate our community. We share a common graduation goal with President Obama; America needs to educate more nontraditional students—and that vast need is one that Dade Medical College is helping meet in the high demand healthcare field.”
