Crystal Tokyo
First appearance: Act 19 (manga); Episode 61(Chibiusa’s flashback), Episode 82 (physical appearance) (anime)
Crystal Tokyo is a utopian city of the future. In both the anime and manga, it’s located in the 30th Century, but is stated to have existed before then; the manga implies that it’s existed since the 21st Century. Crystal Tokyo, as its name implies, used to simply be Tokyo before it was renamed and rebuilt. Not only is Crystal Tokyo the capital of Japan, it’s Earth’s capital city.
Crystal Tokyo came to be after Neo-Queen Serenity and King Endymion ascended to the throne. The details surrounding Crystal Tokyo’s construction as well as NQS's ascension are extremely vague, although we do get some hints. In both the anime and manga, it’s heavily implied that Crystal Tokyo came to be after Neo-Queen Serenity saved the Earth from a catastrophe (in the anime, the disaster seems to have been another ice age). The manga states that Usagi became Queen and Crystal Tokyo was built when she was 22 years old; at the end of the manga (which takes place after a timeskip), Crystal Tokyo is shown being built, helping to bridge the gap between the present and future Sailor Moon eras. The anime’s timeline is much more vague; all we know is that Neo-Queen Serenity saved the Earth from a natural disaster at one point and was soon crowned Queen. The anime Crystal Tokyo seems to be younger than its manga counterpart, however. At some point, Neo-Queen Serenity banished a group of people who were intent on causing violence and mayhem within the city and refused to repent, sending them to the planet Nemesis where they could do no harm to the people of Earth.Â
Thanks to the power of the Silver Crystal, the people of Crystal Tokyo enjoy long life spans (reaching upwards of 1,000 years) and live peaceful lives. In the anime, Crystal Tokyo’s foundation is built on the Crystal Points; when looked at from above, the city forms the shape of a star. Not much is known about the city of Crystal Tokyo itself, but it’s probably safe to assume that it retained much of Tokyo’s infrastructure (having schools, businesses, houses/apartments, etc).Â
At the heart of Crystal Tokyo lies the Crystal Palace. The Crystal Palace serves not only as the residence of the Royal Family and their guardians, but also as the city’s stronghold. From here, Neo-Queen Serenity protects the Earth using the power of the Silver Crystal, which is kept secured deep within the palace. In the manga, it’s revealed that only those with ties to the Silver Millennium may enter the palace; in fact, the only way of entering the Crystal Palace is via a door that appears near the base of the crystalline tower when someone of the Silver Millennium approaches. The many crystal spires and towers of the Crystal Palace serve only as protection for the Royal Family. After accessing the door, one may enter Serenity’s Palace, the true residence of the Royal Family and their guardians. The Queen herself rarely leaves her palace, preferring to watch over Earth from afar as a silent protector.
Although Crystal Tokyo prospered for many years, it was sieged by the Black Moon Clan- the descendants of those originally banished to Nemesis- during the second arc. They sought revenge on Neo-Queen Serenity for banishing them; the manga also adds the motivation of them being disgusted by the “unnatural” lifespans of Crystal Tokyo’s citizens. Although normally the city may have been able to withstand the siege, the Black Moon Clan chose to attack when the Princess, Small Lady, accidentally absorbed the Silver Crystal when she was examining it. Without the power of the Silver Crystal, the city was demolished and the Queen and her guardians were left comatose. Fortunately, with the help of the present-day Senshi, the Black Moon Clan was defeated and Neo-Queen Serenity restored the city to its former grandeur.Â
Other notes:
Serenity’s Palace very closely resembles the architecture of the old Moon Kingdom.
The manga reveals that the Crystal Palace is home to one of largest libraries in the world; the majority of the information is stored on microchips.Â
Crystal Tokyo is the only known city on 30th Century Earth. However, it’s safe to assume that there are still many other civilizations; Crystal Tokyo is just focused on so heavily because of its importance to the plot.
The manga implies that the restored Moon Kingdom is part of Crystal Tokyo; Neo-Queen Serenity is shown telling Chibiusa that she will be taking lessons at one of the Moon’s castles, suggesting that the Moon Kingdom is still in use (as it was restored at the end of the first arc).
