Howdy there!

this is my daemonism sideblog, my main is @rot--mutt. i use he/him.

i first became seriously interested in daemonism sometime in 2024 i think? then in 2025 i managed to finally start "doing" daemonism

my daemon is Corylus, she currently uses any pronouns, most commonly takes the form of a red wolf (Canis rufus), though we're trying to find some alternate forms to fulfill specific purposes (such as a smaller form that can "climb" on me). his CIE-day was August 30th, 2025

i think one of the very best parts of daemonism is how comforting it is. it's genuinely so nice to know that no matter what, no matter where you are, what youre going through, you will always have someone there with you. someone who truly, fundamentally understands you in a way that is impossible for any other human being to. that no matter what experience you're having, they will be there, experiencing it too, right by your side

In a world where daemons exist, like in His Dark Materials (a daemon is like part of your soul in the shape of an animal companion. You cannot get too far from each other), how do you think movies and TV would handle casting?

Whether an actor's daemon suited the character would be a factor in casting

It would be an advantage to have a small daemon that could be hidden*

Roles would be adjusted to accommodate the daemon of whoever was cast

They'd CGI daemons out/keep them just off screen*

Some combo of the above or something else.

So I know daemonism falls under the created umbrella and I wanted to ask: can you have multiple daemons? Since it’s a personification of one’s subconscious and one only has one subconscious? Is it possible to have multiple daemons?

Multiple daemons are definitely possible, and also not uncommon at all! Many daemians either have multiple daemons, or have experimented with it, or had multiple daemons in the past. It's a well-accepted and well-established experience. c:

Relevant here is that daemons are not necessarily a singular personification of a person's subconscious. Daemons can be many things; "daemon" is just as much a type of role or connection you can have with an internal presence / headmate as it is a "type" of headmate in itself.

Some peoples' daemons represent their subconscious. Some people might have one daemon who does and one who doesn't. And some peoples' daemons might be entirely unrelated to that concept. (It's a very freeform practice and concept!)

Even for folks whose daemon/s do represent their subconscious mind, a single daemon might only represent an aspect of it! Human minds are full of contradiction and messy feelings. Sometimes a daemian might find that they work best with two or three (or more!) daemons to represent different aspects of their subconscious. (This has been compared to internal family systems before and I think that's quite fitting!)

So, to give an intuitive example of how this can work: one daemon might represent their emotional self, while the other represents their rational self.

Actual experiences with multiple daemons are very varied though and don't necessarily fall into a recognisable archetype! Daemonism is very personal, because our minds (and what we need to navigate them) are all unique.

... I'm halfway through setting up a daemonism info blog, but in the meantime I'm very enthusiastic to answer questions about this stuff if anyone happens to have any!

Kit has 4 daemons! They all make up parts of herself. The rest of us just have one. Kit's daemons make a lot of sense for them. But also we kinda think it's related to being plural. Before the rest of us became SUPER active, she started to get more daemons instead when trying to find stability during stressful times. Now a lot of things are spread out, so they aren't as active anymore. Still there! Just a lot quieter.

Kit and Ashe's partner, Em has two daemons! So does Allison, but that is because she is a fusion. Um, I think that's all the multi daemons I personally know! @korya-elana that's it, right?

Also, the subconscious/personality can be made from multiple parts! That's the base of the multiple selves theory. Pretty sure.

Now that I am watching His Dark Materials I find myself loving the concept of daemons even more. I thought it was just an animal that represents the soul, but it is so much more. It's an extension of it. It is the voice of reason; it is intuition; it is our inner world. I love how the daemons so often contrast their person - where Lyra is impulsive, Pan thinks about consequences and tries to keep her safe. It's so much better than I thought it was.

The concept of daemons is something I find to be just more and more interesting the more I learn about it. A lot of people think it’s just like a familiar or simply your soul as an animal but it’s so much deeper and more complicated than that. They’re not someone’s entire soul but a very important part of it. Now I take the concept seriously and believe daemons are a real thing that exists in our world, but even ignoring that I really adore them.

Not a lot of people point out how daemons often contrast their person. It’s something I find very interesting and it’s a really great detail that is done incredibly well. Daemons often keep their person in check and like you said act as a voice of reason. Even when we first see Lyra and Pan this is made obvious, with Pan saying Lyra shouldn’t be sneaking into the retiring room and needs to stay out of the scholars’ business.

I have experience with this in my own life as my daemon helps me a lot with staying on track and doing the things I need to do, which I struggle a lot with due to executive dysfunction and fatigue. She also helps my anxiety and paranoia by talking me through it and reassuring me that there’s no threat. My life has been significantly improved since I figured out how to talk to her and I feel like a lot of problems in the world would be solved if everyone knew their daemons that way. They’re our compass in a way, keeping us from straying too far off our path.

This was mostly an excuse to ramble about how cool I think daemons are, but it is really nice seeing people realize daemons are more than just “animal shaped souls” like a lot of people say. Whether it’s just a neat thing in a children’s book trilogy or more spirituality significant to someone it’s just nice to see people really interested in the topic.
