âTaking care of family business,â she replied evenly. If she allowed his mood to affect her, theyâd both be at each otherâs throats within minutes. Besides, she had expected this. âRemember when I asked you if vampires kept humans as pets? Well, I got my answer.â And that answer was a big fat no. Unless one counted subsiders as petsâwhich most did not.Â
âI had toâŚI had to finish all that before Iââ Moved forward with you. She couldnât finish her sentence though. Maybe it was pride, or perhaps embarrassment. Or maybe she was afraid. Of him, of their possible future together, of his species. You should marry him, Dahlia. Maybe heâll set you straight. Ah, that lovely advice from her father. Some parting words after she rambled on for hours about Augustus. Instead of telling her that no man was good enough, Jeremiah Thompson had practically begged her to âlock that downâ. Sure, he might be a dead, murderous sociopath but how many times would anyone ever take interest in a thirty-three year old ex-nun?
âDad would have loved you.â
âFor what itâs worth, Iâm sorry. Didnât think it would bother you so much.â
If this was a different time, Augustus might have been interested in this story. He might have even asked about her father, found a small piece of him that cared enough to know about the remaining shreds of her family. In truth, he was relieved that she wasnât dead. More than that, she came back. She was apologizing.
If it was a different time, it might have been enough. But there was too much anger rippling underneath his skin for her kind words and strong eyes to soothe away. Damsel didnât just leave, she betrayed his trustâ the first real trust he had extended to someone in years and years.
âNot bother me? A month ofâŚâ He trailed off, the hurt clear on his face. âI donât know what you creatures are used to, but I was under the impression that it was common courtesy to not disappear. Do you realize how much I looked for you, how much I tried to⌠I wasted my time on you. And then you come waltzing back on your own time, as if you didnât just abandonââ He cut himself off and looked away, jaw quivering with unspoken words.
She was silenced by the look on his face. For the first time, Damsel seemed to realize that this pretentious, beautiful, dangerous vampire really did love her. Corneliusâ words had rung in her head the past month--how much of a conquest she was, her enticing blood, her virginity. Once that was gone, how could she possibly be at all interesting to a thousand year old being?Â
But she was.
Enough to upset him like this. She longed to run into his arms, curl up against him, inhale his scent, allow his presence to comfort her, but his tone kept her away. Sheâd never been afraid of him before, not really. There was an odd sense of faith she put in him, that he wouldnât hurt her. But now, like this...after seeing her Aunt and Uncle as a sort of twisted image of her beloved Augustus...
âThese past few months have made me realize that Iâve gotta grow up a little. I told Lilith and Atticus that Iâd take care of them, but then you came along and I got majorly sidetracked. I had to keep my family safe, Augustus. Those two are all I have left in this world. Surely you can understand that.â Damsel glanced down at her lap, her mind weary and heart aching.Â
âBut I did come back. I fought to come back, and if you knew anything about me youâd know Iâm not the sort to return to a place once Iâve blown through. Not even my family could keep me in California, but you...you brought me back here.â
