“Long time no see, Lil.”
“What in god’s green earth are you doing here, Sammy.” Lilith said, although she was already pulling her brother into a hug. “Jesus.”
“Bury it,” the demon let out, cocking the gun once more before he strode over and emptied another silver round into its head. “For good measure,” he added, turning back to the younger and looking her over. He was a demon, yes, and for all intensive purposes he stole her soul away, but he had great paternal affection for her of which could never be denied.
“You all right there, little Lil?”
“Fine,” Lilith said not flinching at the gunshot. If she was honest she didn’t flinch at very much anymore. Weird as it was over the years she’d come to accept that Joel was something closer to a father then a prison guard. After all he was in no way obligated to keep Lilith alive. He was kinder then most people she knew, and for the most part she trusted him. An odd sort of nihilist relationship, but one she could trust.
She calmed her breath eyes flickering to the taller man, and said simply. “Yeah - I’m fine Joel.” She went over to the body of the wolf trying to gauge how heavy it would be.
“Got an hour’s work or so here. I’m assuming you want it with the others? Damn wild pack I can see the blood on its snout. - If you need to head out I can get this done before sunrise.”
“All right sweet heart,”
“I’m gonna need you to duck down.” The cigar puffed out a plume of smoke before the demon let it fall from his lips and smolder against the damp earth below. He fired once, hitting the wolf in the shoulder, and once again, blowing away another hunk from it’s side, successfully slowing the beast down. He pulled back and rolled his neck once, crack, and twice, crack, back ‘round.
“Ought’ta be more careful there,” he grinned, “Woods ain’t safe.”
Lilith ducked - her head pulled down by her hands turning her body away from Joel and towards the beast. She hadn’t heard the wolf start toward her.
Sighing slightly she pulled herself up after the shots.
“You know eventually you have to stop calling me sweetheart. I don’t have one of those if you recall. Where the hell did that mongrel come from.”
“Jesus Christ, you know this is why I do vampires. Where the fuck are we going to put it’s body.”

Technically, Lilith was right. They had died that first night–Damsel had not faced her Aunt and Uncle weeks ago. They’d been hollow shells. Walking corpses. That’s how she’d gotten through it. If she’d seen a glimmer of recognition in their faces, she would have hesitated, and probably wouldn’t be here to tell the tale. The blonde reached forward, her hand gentle on Lilith’s forearm.
“They weren’t there anymore, Lil. They…passed on the night you saved those kids. There was just a little clean up left to do.” It was the nicest way she could put it, really. Subsiders were frightening; stuck between life and death, mindless like zombies. If Damsel hadn’t dealt with them during her time stranded on Cyric, it would have been even more terrifying.
“I’m so…tired. How are you always the strong one?”
Lilith wasn’t aware she still had a heart until it started breaking. It wasn’t jagged - no it was a split that was clean.
She knew what happened. She knew her parents had suffered and that it was over now. That they weren’t alive. Who knew what they were now. Still it caused her to almost stumble. There was a horror in what Damsel was saying.
“They - they were subsiders. Oh god.” Lilith didn’t know what was worse. Being a vampire or being one without a mind. Living like something not quite animal but not quite a human either.
“I- oh god.”
Veronika understood how sarcasm worked in fact she enjoyed partaking in it as well. “Arn’t we all here?” she asked looking around the bar with various people drinking and chatting. Well some where some where engrossed in small devices that she had no clue about really. “Oh would you look at that so I am,” she replied in kind before finishing her drink.
“Gotta admit if we all got together maybe we’d figure out world peace.” She gave a half smile. “ You want another one or are you trying to pace yourself?”
“At first I just wanted to find them. To know for sure.” She couldn’t move forward with Augustus until she closed that chapter of her life. “But I was detoured–ended up in Santa Monica. Dad was…very sick. So I stayed there for a few weeks until he passed, then I knew I had to…” Her chin trembled as she took in Lilith’s expression. Powering through this wasn’t easy, but she had to get it out.
“I found them,” she didn’t dare say ‘Auntie and Uncle’ or ‘Your Parents’. Them was enough. “They weren’t…you were right. They didn’t make it.” That was a lovely way of putting it. It had been gruesome, and certainly not something Lilith or Atticus should have witnessed. In the end, it was only right that it was Damsel who finished the job.
“I’m sorry.”
“W-what.” Lilith looked at Damsel not sure she understood what she was understanding. She hadn’t known her uncle was sick - and.
“Damsel they died that night. I heard them - they. They were dead.” Lilith didn’t like the tone. She couldn’t say mom and dad. She couldn’t - they had died that night. Final death. They weren’t alive in any sort of form.
Right? She Wouldn’t have left them there if they hadn’t been. Lilith wouldn’t have.
“You saw their bodies right. Damsel - they didn’t. Please tell me I didn’t leave them like that.”
I was born in a thunderstorm I grew up overnight I played alone I played on my own I survived
A hug–she hadn’t been expecting that. Damsel felt some of her pent up stress and sadness untangle itself from her heart, squeezing Lilith protectively until her cousin pulled back.
“I couldn’t…I couldn’t keep moving forward. I promised you and Atticus I’d take care of everything, but I, ah…I wasn’t sure if I’d come back.” Don’t cry. Jesus Christ, do not cry. “But I had to.” And she couldn’t afford Lilith, Atticus, or Augustus attempting to stop her. If she didn’t make it back alive, then there’d be no further harm done. Of course, Damsel had not been sure about what she’d set out to do until she visited home and found her father dying.
At least they were all orphans together now.
“It’s over now, Lil. All of it.”
Why - oh god. Damsel.” Lilith didn’t want to cry, but she was the one that did shit like this. She was the one that was hot headed and didn’t know if she was coming back. Damsel was supposed to be alright. Hell she’d already beaten the life expectancy of most people in this life. She wasn’t supposed to do it. Lilith was the hunter, she was the heart.
And she looked broken. Like Lilith felt like most of time. Especially after - No. They were dead. Lilith was there when they died. They were dead. Killed right then and there.
A sort of panic filled Lilith that wasn’t normal for her. After all she hardly felt it anymore. “What do you mean? What’s all over. Damsel. What are you talking about.”
“Hey there, Lil Girl.”
“Fancy seeing you here.”
Lilith froze for a second, after all no one called her that. Well not since she was smaller. Turning around she saw a flash of blonde and for a second she almost wanted to punch damsel.
To be honest she probably would have if she hadn’t missed her so much. Rushing the woman she pulled her into a hug. “You asshat where were you? You fucking left me here.”
She stood back noticing little things. “Dahlia what happened. You don’t look right what happened?”
“So what brings you to these halls of desperation?”
“Oh you know trying to get my life on track,” Lilith said the sarcasm falling off her lips. “I’m drinking. Seems like you are too.”
“So long as she gets it, that’s fine with me,” he replied. “Asmodeus. Do you need to write it down for her? I can spell it for you.” He realised it was an uncommon name (not to mention that it was not his birth name, only one he had taken), so it was often difficult for people to transcribe.
“She’ll get it.” Lilith went to get a the pencil and without thinking started to write down the name. “Huh? No I got it.” After all Lilith had been around the - more focused parts of the church. Demon names weren’t hard for her to spell.
“Do you need anything else? I’m about to lock up.”
“Hey, there is nothing wrong with the children’s menu.” She said with a laugh. “Oh dear, do you want the pg rated ones or worse?” Her jobs had quite the range. “I had to play a dog for a guy. Nothing sexual. Just had to sit next to him on a collar and leash like a dog for two hours. Got paid 2g’s.” Not the most glamorous job, but hey, money was money.
“There is if your a grown adult. Are you telling me you eat like a chipmunk?” She chuckled. “Sounds like quite a portfolio. If it makes you feel better I would have probably bitten him.” Lilith mostly stuck to construction or fixing up stuff when she was on the road for extra money. She didn’t look down on other jobs, but every time she tried to be a waitress she’d - well she wasn’t allowed to go back to that town.
“Anywhere’s good as long as ‘Calculus for Enjoyment and Challenge’ doesn’t join us.” He eyed the textbook with disdain as he stood up, still groggy.
Eddie had to weigh his options here. Being on Lilith’s good side meant he was on Adam’s as well, but he risked spilling something embarrassing and whatever was bound to happen when his brother found out.
Was telling her worth it? Absolutely.
“He sounds a bit like a lovesick schoolgirl. He won’t shut up about how ‘she’s incredible, she changes everything, she makes me want to be better’ - this is only what I’ve heard, by the way - not to mention how beautiful she is.”
“I’d honestly be offended it you brought it.” The side of Lilith’s mouth went up slightly as she started to move.
She hadn’t expected him to answer so easily and she stifled a laugh trying not to get caught by the librarian again. After all it was over the top, and preposterous and exactly what she would have done to Atticus if she’d been able to.
“I didn’t realize there was another Lilith on the island, because I’m pretty sure not even a school girl would say that about me. Come on I think I’m supposed to be dropping you off somewhere.”

Adam stopped in his tracks, truly registering what Lilith was saying. Maybe it was the fact that this was the first time she’d ever mentioned him caring, maybe it was him being forced to acknowledge it, but a something in his heart dropped and it felt like it was going to drag the both of them underwater. He was too volatile, he didn’t understand how he felt now and he sure as hell couldn’t keep either of them safe in the future. But god, did he want to understand.
“Wait.” He turned back to her.
“I… I’d hoped that it wouldn’t have mattered. I wish I could make it into some kind of meaning, but… I just want to see you happy. I know that.”
Guilt. He could separate that feeling from the tangled mess in his head. He’d only felt guilt once before in his life, and it was the guilt of a brother he left for dead. He didn’t like the implication. He didn’t like a lot of things, but most of those things could be shut out, silenced and beaten down. Lilith was finding something too precious to let go of, but too treasured to feel worthy of.
“You can come back, you know.” That afternoon. In the dead of night. After months, years, he didn’t mind. He was powerless around her no matter what.
Lilith hadn’t moved an inch, so his comment wasn’t exactly pressing. The throbbing in her head however was. It was something that felt almost like tears. The one’s she never really cried. After all the only person she would cry about was Atticus. Her parents had a few tears, but mostly anxiety and loss. It wasn’t because she had disappointed them. Damsel had never made her cry, because she knew that Damsel would do the right thing. She had a heart.
She didn’t care. She didn’t want to care. She spent her whole life trying to kill it. After all only one Thomson sibling was allowed to care. The other was a killer. Someone who did what was necessary not what was easy. One who didn’t cry as she saw the world burn down around her. She didn’t revel in chaos, but she accepted it.
It felt like her throat was tightening. Both had his words and the rush of feeling that had snuck past her defenses. “Adam - “ his name almost sounded like a prayer. Something that frightened her like shock and awe.
“You know what I am.” Her mouth didn’t want to say anymore, but her mind went back to the beginning. The cold splatter of blood across her face - so unnatural but wasn’t a ten year old unnatural choice? Fear in bright blue eyes as she went back to the motel to check on her baby brother. A mother’s hushed prayer to a god that seemed not to care for her daughter. The times she fought to hide the wounds she already had.
“Don’t wish for the impossible, Adam.” Her feet seemed not to want to walk. They wanted to stay next to this impossibility. She was preaching something she didn’t practice after all. So instead she went closer to Adam.
Just for something. Some sort of sign that matched the world she lived in. Some sort of conformation she wasn’t wrong in building the walls she did. Instead there was a confusion, yet again.
Instead of anger she smiled a sad smile. Something that belonged on a kid who just got invited to play for the first time. It was a thank you and an apology all in one look.
Because she would be back. She didn’t want to leave now. And a rush of words came out. Something she wouldn’t admit sober, but for some reason the pain in her head didn’t stop her.
“I don’t want to leave.” She couldn’t look at him and more so she looked at her bare feet.

A fond smile brushed across Adam’s lips. Lilith knew fine and well what he was, and she still had the nerve to worry. He also knew that she knew where her own brother’s apartment was - even when shitfaced drunk. He said nothing of it, only nodding slightly at her last comment.
“I’ve had worse.” He spoke softly, and cut the thought off there. Intent lay thick in the air; all the words he held back had slipped their way into those three syllables. He was afraid, but he was overpowered.
He scanned her face, searching in her eyes, breath, the clench in her jaw, for a sign - anything to tell him how he was supposed to react when he couldn’t focus on anything else but her.
“I’ll get some water and advil,” he said, breaking the silence. Her hand slipped from his neck as he passed by her.
Lilith wasn’t sure how to respond. Hateful feelings were easier, but she didn’t feel them at the moment. It was that damn smile on his face. She didn’t know what to make of it. No one looked at her like that before and she wouldn’t know what it meant. Sneers and smirks she understood, hell even just a smile she got sometimes. She knew how to react to those.
She didn’t know how to respond to his comment. After all she could guess he had worse. Still her hand hadn’t come down. She could feel his heart beat faintly under the tips of her fingers. She wondered if his heart naturally beat like that, or if the injuries were speeding it up.
It didn’t register until after that he had been searching her face, when she was looking at his. It caught her breath for a second, and suddenly his was talking and past her.
It made her pause her hand still up in the air, wondering why she cared so much. After all she wasn’t supposed to care about anything anymore. She’d fought that didn’t she? It almost made her angry. She didn’t understand and it was frustrating. She wasn’t like able so why did he pretend she was. She pulled the hand back to her side.
“You are always taking care of me. When I was injured, and - Why? Why do you care? Not that I’m angry that you do or anything. Just why?” It wasn’t an angry question - but it was slightly broken. Chipped at the edges her question came from a girl who’d spent the better part of her life getting anger thrown at not softness.
“Never mind - I - should probably get to Atticus’s place before he thinks I ran away again.” She’d still hadn’t moved from the hallway, but the worst had bursted out as a cover something she could hide behind.
