Midoriya grew up hearing all about quirks and soulmates. Learning that his chances of getting a quirk lessens as he grows up, Midoriya hopes beyond hope that he still has a soulmate. Surely, he isnât part of the unlucky 1% of the world thatâs both quirkless and without a soulmate. At least, Midoriya really wishes he wasnât.
Most of what he knows about soulmates he learned online or from his mother.
(âWhy are you suddenly so interested in soulmates?â his mother asked him one day when she walked into his room and saw him reading up on them.
âItâs just thatâŚâ Midoriya hesitated, âwhat if I donât have a soulmate? Iâm already quirkless, what if I end up alone too?â
His motherâs eyes softened and she gave him a hug. âOh sweetie. You wonât, I know you wonât.â
Midoriya pulled away to look at her. âWhat was it like, meeting dad and knowing he was your soulmate?â
She chuckled and sat on the edge of his bed. âIt was⌠wonderful. I saw his wings first but I couldnât say anything to him. I was too shy to. So, I just got to know him, what he likes and dislikes, what makes him laugh, just everything I could. And then we started dating. But I still couldnât tell him that I saw his wings.â
She paused, as if she saw something Midoriya couldnât.
âAnd then one day, he stopped and stared at me. It was like he could see all my secrets. And he just goes, âOh. Theyâre beautiful,â and I knew right away he saw my wings. I started crying and he freaked out,â she laughed and Midoriya was startled to see tears in her eyes. âWe got married and had you soon after that. And then he⌠left.â
A few tears ran down her cheeks and Midoriya jumped and went to hug her.
âAh, Iâm sorry, Izuku, I didnât mean to cry,â she sniffled and he tightened his hold on her.
âN-no Iâm sorry! I shouldnât have asked.â
His mother pulled away and wiped her tears on her sleeve.
âCome on, dinnerâs almost ready.â)
Training with All Might took up most of his free time. Midoriya hardly had any time to even think about soulmates and whether he had one or not. He was just excited that he was finally getting a quirk.
He trained as much as his body would allow him to. Soon, it was the entrance exam for UA. He had no problems with the written exam (well, except for that one question, and that other one, andâŚ), but he was worried about the practical exam. Sure, he had the strength now, but he didnât know how to control it.
He went home that day feeling like crap. He got no points, zero. He had to give up his dreams of being a hero after all. All Might would be so disappointed in him!
He spent the next few days moping around his room until his letter from UA came in. After that, Midoriya couldnât keep the smile off his face.
(Walking into class 1-A, Midoriya was a nervous mess. Not only was he in UA, but there was always a chance that he shared a class with Kacchan (his fears were confirmed the moment he stepped in: Kacchan was being scolded by the scary glasses guy for having his feet on the desk).
He looked around the class, his eyes stopping on a boy with red and white hair. He didnât know why, but he felt drawn to the dual-colored hair boy. The boy suddenly looked straight at him, and Midoriya swore he saw surprise cross his face before he quickly looked away.
His heart started beating wildly in his chest and Midoriya could feel his cheeks burning. He couldnât think too much about it however, as scary glasses guy took notice of him.
âYou! I seem to have misjudged youâŚâ)
Midoriya found himself watching Todoroki. He didnât exactly mean to, but when class was boring his eyes would drift over to the quiet boy.
He noticed how his eyebrows would scrunch when he worked through a problem, how he would lightly tap his fingers on his desk without realizing, how sometimes his own eyes would stray over to Midoriyaâs.
The green haired boy always looked away first, too embarrassed. Yet he couldnât help but think that maybe Todoroki was interested in him the way he was interested in the boy.
(When Todoroki pulled Midoriya to the side during the sports festival, he told him about his family. Midoriya struggled to say something when the other boy was finished, but his gaze made him feel like Todoroki could see right through him.
âW-why are you telling me this?â
He didnât think he would get a response at first. The taller boy scanned him up and down, yet the shorter boy felt like he wasnât looking at him, not really.
âI trust you,â Todoroki finally said. His heart stopped for one second and the next second it started to thump loudly in his chest.
Todoroki didnât wait for a response. Instead, he walked away from Midoriya, leaving him flustered.)
Not much changed after that exchange, except Midoriya caught Todoroki staring at him a lot more often, a thoughtful expression on his face. It made Midoriya wonder what he was thinking about.
Midoriya tried getting closer to the other boy, but it was only after the whole Stain event that Todoroki really started opening to him.
(âHey, Todoroki can I ask you something?â
The two were walking to class together after happening to get to the school gate at the same time.
Todoroki hummed in agreement.
âWhat do you think of soulmates?â
His steps faltered for a moment before walking normally again as if nothing happened.
âCanât wait for mine to realize weâre soulmates,â he muttered quietly, but Midoriya heard him.
âWait, you mean you already know your soulmate? You can see their wings?â Midoriya asked, surprised. Todoroki only nodded. Midoriya stopped in his tracks, mind whirling with thoughts, yet one thought stuck out the most: who is his soulmate?)
There was a part of Midoriya that wanted to ask Todoroki who his soulmate was. But a bigger part was afraid to know, afraid to find out that it wasnât him.
He doesnât know when exactly he started liking the other, but he did and it hurt to think that maybe they werenât meant for each other. He tried not to dwell on it, putting those thoughts to the back of his mind as he continued getting to know Todoroki.
He wondered when heâll find his soulmate.
(Midoriya had invited Todoroki over to study so there they were, Midoriya laying on his bed and Todoroki on the floor leaning against the bed. Midoriya was looking over his notes, trying to make sense of what they had learned that day.
âCan you explain that one more time? I donât really understand howâŚâ Midoriya trailed off as something red caught his eye.
He looked over at Todoroki, sitting up and eyes widening as he realized that they were Todorokiâs wings. Todorokiâs wings which he could now see, Todorokiâs wings which meant they were soulmates.
âOh my god,â Midoriya whispered, and the other boy (his soulmate!) turned around. He took one look at Midoriyaâs face before he was standing, concern flashing across his face.
âMidoriya, are you okay?â he asked, but the shorter boy didnât hear him.
He was staring at Todorokiâs wings (his left wing was white, his right was red, and Midoriya registered that it was the opposite of his hair) as they spread out across his room. He was mesmerized by them. He got up from his bed, hand stretched out as he tried to touch the wings. He was surprised that he could, the feathers soft on his fingers. Todoroki shuddered even though he couldnât actually feel the touch.
âYou- you can see them now?â Todoroki asked softly.
Midoriya only nodded, his hand running through the feathers. He suddenly stopped, retracting his hand as if he was burned.
âI-Iâm sorry! I just started touching your wings without asking first!â
âNo, itâs okay. It was⌠nice,â he gave a small smile and Midoriya responded with a big smile of his own.
âI was wondering when you were going to see them,â the winged boy said. âI didnât think it would happen while we were studying, though.â
âNeither did I,â Midoriya laughed, âbut Iâm glad it did.â)
