Roter Sand Lighthouse

This famous German Lighthouse is located on the North Sea and was the first building to be built on the sea floor. Its construction completed in 1885 and was deactivated in 1986, but still serves as a day beacon.

Barnegat Lighthouse

Also know locally as Old Barney, Barnegat Light is located in New Jersey, and is 169 feet tall. The current tower was built by Lt. George G. Meade, who would later become the general to lead the Union to victory at Gettysburg during the American Civil War. The light was deactivated in 1944 but was brought back in 2009 and still operates today.

Cape Meares Light

Today is a special day at the Daily Lighthouse blog as it’s my (the person who runs the account, if you didn’t know, my name is Maze) birthday, as well as the fact we hit 20 days yesterday, so I figured I would share one of my favorite lights I’ve visited, Cape Meares. Cape Meares is located on the Tillamook Bay in Oregon and it was built in 1890. In 1964 the Coast Guard planned to destroy the light but was stopped by the public. The light has also been subject to much vandalization as around 1968, the bull-eyes in the Fresnel lens were stolen, and only 3 of the 4 were returned. There was also an incident in 2010 in which two drunken locals shot at the light, damaging lens again. Despite this, it is still standing and open to the public, in fact, it was also inspiration to the lighthouse featured in the video game Life is Strange. It was deactivated in 1963.

Day 20 of posting about Lighthouses

Mizunokojima Lighthouse

This light is located in Japan’s Bungo Chanel, and due to it’s isolated nature it had a long four year process of being built. Since it was finished in 1904, it has been hit by several typhoons, some even reaching its top floors and roof. Despite this Mizunokojima remains active and was automated in 1986.

Day 19 of posting about Lighthouses

Pharos Lighthouse

Not to be confused with the famous ancient lighthouse Pharos of Alexandria, this British Lighthouse is located in Lancashire. It’s official name is the Upper Lighthouse, but since it’s completion in 1840 it’s been know as Pharos. Interestingly, it’s located in a residential street, which isn’t typical for a still functioning English Light.

Day 18 of posting Lighthouses

Grosse Point Light

Constructed in 1873 after lobbying from the local community after several boating accidents nearby. It was designed by Orland Metcalf Poe, who had designed many towers which eventually came to be known to be in the “Poe style”. It is the tallest light in Illinois at 113 feet and was automated in 1935

Day 17 of posting about Lighthouses

Tybee Island Light

This lighthouse station has had many towers, with it currently being on it’s fourth, and the previous two had not been lit. Was damaged by confederates during the American Civil War as well as a hurricane soon after. The Daymark, or the paint pattern of the lighthouse, was also modified many times, with the ratio of white and gray changing. Automated in 1972.

Fenwick Island Light

Built in 1858 and the oldest lighthouse in Delaware. Originally isolated on an isolated peninsula near the state line of Maryland, but the light has slowly been surrounded by civilization, now not so lonely. Automated in 1940 and deactivated in 1978 before public movement recommissioned it in 1982.

White Shoal Lighthouse

Located on Lake Michigan and the tallest tower both in the state and on the Great Lakes. Still used as a navigation aid. It was the combination of all efforts from the Board of Lighthouses to build effective lights on shoals. First lit in 1910 and automated in 1976, also 121 feet tall.

Garapan Lighthouse

The lighthouse before it was renovated in the 90s.

The Garapan Lighthouse, also known as the Japanese Lighthouse, was built in 1934 and survived the Second World War. After, however, it was abandoned, until it refurbished into a restaurant, but after a couple of years the restaurant was closed and returned to destitution. The concrete of the tower was made out of burnt seashells and coral, making it weather easily. Fortunately in 2021 it was made into a cafe.

Cedar Key Light

The light in around 1894.

The shortest tower in Florida, clocking in at 23 feet, and also the oldest on the west coast of Florida. Now used by the University of Florida as a wildlife refuge with the tower as a student dormitory. It was deactivated in 1915.

Boston Light

The oldest light station in the United States with the second tower to ever be built. Originally built in 1716, before the establishment of the US, and in fact used as a stronghold for British forces. It was attacked and burned twice by the opposing Americans, and when the British withdrew in 1776 they destroyed the tower. The tower was rebuilt in 1783, and although it was automated in 1998, it is still staffed by the coast guard.

Day 12 of posting about Lighthouses

Ponce de Leon Inlet Light

Formerly known as the Mosquito Inlet Light, the Ponce de Leon Inlet Light has a rocky history. Originally built in 1835, but the necessary lamp oil was never delivered. After this, due to strong storms and the surrounding Florida War, it collapsed and was replaced in 1887. The tallest lighthouse in Florida and automated in 1953.

Sandy Hook Lighthouse

Located in New Jersey and the oldest working lighthouse in America. Formerly 500 feet from the tip of Sandy Hook, but due to littoral drift it’s now 1 1/2 miles from said tip. Automated in 1965.

Why are some lighthouses so tall and others so short? I imagine it has to do with how far the light can and needs to reach due to the curvature of the earth but id like your perspective on this :)

You are certainly correct about the curvature of the earth, and the higher the light is from the mean high water, or the average height of high tides, the father it can reach out to sea. But height can also serve as a challenge for local sailors to be able to see the light, so it’s often the architect’s responsibility to strike balance. Many times it’s the right combination of both tower height and sea level, so that’s why you’ll see shorter towers on high cliffs and taller towers on shores. Thank you so much for the question!

Lange Nelle Lighthouse

Located on the Belgian coastline of the North Sea and with light able to reach 27 nautical miles. Originally established in 1771 with its current tower being lit in 1949.
