Want a jean skirt but don’t wanna pay for an overpriced one? I’ve got a solution for you! 

So, I really wanted a jean skirt and went to Salvation Army, but they didn’t have any skirts in my size so I wandered over to the jean section for another option.

Supplies:

Jeans

Scissors

Tape measure 

Seam rippers + tiny scissors 

Sewing materials (i.e. needle + thread or sewing machine) 

Step 1: 

Put the jeans on inside out and mark on the side of the jeans where you want them. I did fingertip length for easiness and I knew that they would be the perfect length. Take the jeans off and measure from the bottom of the jeans to the mark and duplicate that length on the other side and the middle and make marks as you go. I didn’t connect all the lines I made, but I used huuuuge scissors and just used them as a guide. 

Step 2: 

Next is to rip the seams out of the remaining legs and up to the zipper in the front and the back. I made a mark on the inside of the back of the pants to where the zipper started so I would know where to stop. Just a warning, jeans are hard to rip the seams out of, which is why i used tiny scissors bc it was easier to cut through them all. This is the most tedious task as a heads up! 

Step 3: 

Lay out the jeans flat and arrange the fabric pieces so they lay flat like below. If you find there’s a need for more fabric, like if there’s a triangle shape, use a piece of the leftover fabric to cover that up. Once you have everything laid out, pin it down in place to make it easier to sew. 

Step 4: 

Time to start sewing! I didn’t want to get out my sewing machine so I just whip stitched it from the bottom. This also takes a majority of the time so just as a heads up! Sewing the back is a little tricky because it kinda wouldn’t stay flat but I ended up just following the natural path of the fabric instead of forcing it. 

Step 5 (OPTIONAL): 

Since this is kind of a deconstructed look, I decided to destroy the skirt some more so it looked more cohesive. You can learn how to do this from another tutorial I did here! I threw them in the wash to loosen up the holes and such and this was the final look!
