I wanted to share with you the colour system I use in my practice. I developed it after years of research on historical magical associations and the “psychophysical effects of the electro-magnetic radiation of light on human mood and behaviour”, a definition I am borrowing from Wright (2008), though I have used a number of empirical sources from psychology, neuroscience, and linguistics.
Keep this in mind!!! Non-primary colours carry some of the properties of the colours that make it up, including black or white! This also applies to pairing colours. Always make sure that colours you are using are complimentary in appearance as well as in purpose!
White (sometimes light colours) Energy reflection (total reflection for pure white), barriers (can’t touch me kind), uncompromising, clarity, purity, sterility, simplicity, cleanliness, increases physical space around you
*** White paired with warm colours can create negativity by making the properties of the warm colour excessive. Be careful with pairing.
Black (sometimes dark colours) Energy absorption (total absorption for pure black), barriers (can’t find me kind), uncompromising, clarity, hiding, security, safety, glamour, heaviness, decreases physical space around you
*** Black paired with warm colours can create the opposite effect by reversing the properties of the warm colour. Be careful with pairing.
Grey Neutrality, drawing in, hibernation, lack of energy, nothingness
*** Pure grey is the only psychologically neutral colour
Red Physical activation (”fight or flight”), fear, aggression, strength, masculinity, excitement, strain, defiance, survival, heat, motivation, combat
Pink (ie: light red) Physically calming, femininity, healthy sexuality, romance, reproduction, warmth, tenderness, compassion, self-love
Yellow Emotional activation, joy, optimism, confidence, self-esteem, extraversion, friendliness, creativity
Light Yellow Youthfulness, childhood, delicacy, softness
Orange Abundance, comfort, food, warmth
Brown Earthiness, reliability, support, heaviness, seriousness
Blue Intellectually activating, reason, logic, clear thought, clear communication, can be physically calming, relaxing
Light Blue Mentally calming, mentally soothing, increases concentration
Green Emotionally calming, balance, harmony, equilibrium, rest
Purple Spirituality, introversion, contemplation, meditation, time, intuition
*** Violet is the last visible wavelength, the closest colour connection we have to the unseen
Note: The most powerful colours in magic are white (reflection) and black (absorption). The most powerful colours in psychology are red (physically activating), yellow (emotionally activating), green (emotionally calming), and blue (mentally activating, sometimes physically calming).
