About The Deep Dive Caper and Carmen's skills

Not only is it just a tragic episode for Dexter Wolfe and Carmen in general - but the scene where Baby Carmen is taken back to V.I.L.E. really stands out to me. Especially these quotes:

Bellum: My pocket protector!

Brunt: Well, well, looks like lil' lambkins is a natural-born thief.

Bellum: Like her father.

Shadowsan: "We entered a pact to keep your lineage secret from you"

Not only does the scene illustrate how the Faculty hilariously reacts with children (especially Cleo and Bellum), but it also makes me wonder how far does Carmen's thieving roots go.

With the word "lineage", you could interpret it in 2 ways:

It refers to the similarities between Carmen and Wolfe only

It hints that thievery has been in Carmen's family for a long time (I'm leaning more towards this one)

The quotes from Bellum and Brunt may also make it clear that thievery has been in Carmen and her father's instincts since birth which suggests that maybe the Wolfe/Sandiego family tree has the thievery passed from generation to generation for such a long time that it's practically an in born skill.

That makes me wonder if most of Carmen's family were V.I.L.E. Faculty since its founding. This would probably make Wolfe and Carmen's ascension to Faculty an inevitable tragedy if you think about it.

BUT

What if Baby Carmen stealing the pocket protector without Bellum finding out was a complete fluke?

Maybe she was trying to get Bellum's attention and her baby fingers just grabbed it.

Maybe the fact that she was cuddled by Brunt could have wired her brain to thinking that it was the way to get approval by the Faculty at that time - and that's why she felt like she had the skill ingrained into her.

Then again, it makes you wonder whether her skills are truly her nature or nurtured. If Carmen was told off in a more serious tone, would that mean that her thieving skills would have developed later and she could have a slightly more difficult time picking the skill up or would she have kept her skills anyway?

Does anyone else wonder what happened right after Carmen got mind wiped in season 4? Like what happened when she woke up, how did she react to things, did she keep getting flashes of memories due to different variables? I feel like she would constantly need to be mind wiped in order for the Faculty to get their perfect thief. I wish we got more in depth storylines with Carmen and the Faculty during this time, it would have been so interesting

Absolutely love this food for thought. Sadly I have only a teensy wip on this idea (link at end), but I really should mash with half-half Carmen more, I just don’t have any ideas/plots on it yet— but if anyone wants to inspire me or brainstorm 🤷‍♀️ who knows

Personally I think she’d be erratic, illogical, confused, frequently wandering, violently untrusting or deeply clingy (switches between both), gets sudden pains & blackouts, hot headed, etc. Basically a child missing half of her mind. Unpredictable and beyond a handful, those three weeks they really had their work cut out for them. Likely also flashes, hallucinations, and delusions— the worst torture Carmen has ever been through was those three weeks.

To this day/post dark red she still has vivid dreams of running up the walls, slamming her head on the grass to feel something, screaming until her lungs burst, etc. Brunt comforting her and snapping that time she shredded her arms. It makes her shudder. She never tells anyone.

I also like to head canon VILE have to cool down for a few days to a week or so between brainwashings, so this disoriented Carmen lasts longer (it did take 3 weeks, after all). But would they lock her up (could drive her insane) or pamper her into slowly taking on their schools of thought/trying to treat her like another operative in the castle (…though she’s likely to be instinctively terrified of brunt at first)

^ I also recon it just… didn’t work. She was off her nut, half of the time they couldn’t hold her down and had to introduce some kind of sedative device so they could just subdue her when needed. Also locked up the entire castle because she almost climbed a mountain that time she escaped

Also love the idea of her being mostly herself at first just without the memories, she doesn’t really know anything. So Carmen instinctively knows she’s in horrible danger but she can’t rationalise why and it’s killing her. She can’t escape, she doesn’t know who she is but her heart keeps screaming like she’s going to die. It’s miserable and petrifying— they’d probably have to isolate and frequently sedate her because the stress is overwhelming her mind.

In comparison to say Gray’s brainwashing (which was mostly the elimination of memories and certain feelings/tendencies) I think it’s reasonable to say Carmen’s would be more extreme & drawn out. Has Bellum even created memories before? How hard is it to rewrite literally *everything* Carmen knows? (Instincts, memories, personality, worldview, it was everything when you think about it)

And what didn’t survive?

Like maybe dark!Carmen doesn’t know how to do the nerve pinch. Not that she’d ever need it or it’s really that bad but… it’s strange. She really can’t remember and is far too insecure to ask. (Probably because it was linked too closely to Shadowsan and his memory was gravelly manipulated)

She has also technically age regressed because everything she learnt post VILE and with her team (how to open up, schedule herself, take advice, manage jet lag, her coffee order, how to love & feel loved and supported) that’s all damaged or erased altogether. Another headcanon dark!Carmen is terrible at taking care of herself (doesn’t eat drink sleep enough whatsoever, is just constantly on the move. She’d probably have miserable crashes in hotel rooms around the world screaming out what’s wrong with me? Then returns home with a massive grin on her face and multiple artefacts in hand because that, at least, was still in tact).

Thieving also gives her something to bury herself into to ignored these flaws— plus, the faculty love it.

These actions are likely to have heavy consequences when Carmen is normal again. She discovers she can’t eat the same portions she used to (stomachs do shrink) she’s up at odd hours of the night and still crashes badly (her body is miserable, it really weighs on her as she adjusts, especially without the ongoing caper high to keep her mentally *just* afloat), and that’s without considering the actual brainwashing consequences on her mind. Overall she’s going to have horrible withdrawal & be forever changed by the experience. The team notice and… painfully don’t know how to help.

First, Mari, know that I ate up your ramble with a spoon. I could read a whole fic like this. It would be painful but I would love every word of it. (I really feel like I once encountered a fic that covered this, but I just can't find it...)

To anyone who hasn't read that wip, READ IT!!! It's so good!

Okay, now for my thoughts (and apologies if these aren't very good, especially compared to what everyone else is doing; brain is mush lately):

Rewiring Carmen would have been a vastly different job than any of the failed operatives: her entire existence is rooted in VILE; they're in her earliest memories, they're who taught her to read and speak and exist as a (mostly functional) human being (Carlotta's gonna murder someone over that), every one of her foundational, fundamental memories is rooted in VILE. She has no 'normal' life for a mind wipe to fall back on; she never, to her memory, existed outside of them, and the Faculty knows she was never meant to (Carlotta's gonna murder many someones).

So Bellum had to do a complete rewiring, which was a fun challenge! For her. For Carmen...not so much.

It didn't work. Not fully, not at first. For a while there was no telling what sort of person she'd wake up and be; some days docile, some days flighty and on-edge, like she was expecting something horrible to happen, always confused. Brunt tried to be there when she woke up, to fill her in on VILE-approved explanations and help the rewiring 'stick.' For the first week or so, though, something would cause her to jolt back to who she really was, a moment of pure lucidity.

Of course, she'd fight, scream and rail and try to escape. Blind desperation would set in (because of course her thin sense of self-preservation would be the first thing to go) and she'd practically kill herself trying to get out; at one point she nearly jumped out a window to crash on the rocks below.

Bellum was very glad she'd had the foresight to institute a shock collar. And sedation.

Eventually, the part of her that remembered who she was got sufficiently frayed/tampered with that they had an easy week where she was docile, clingy, and very receptive to 'training.' End result: their perfect thief.

But not wholly perfect. *slaps Carmen with every one of my migraine headcanons* (yes, she tried to work through them; yes, VILE knew that was a bad idea; no, they didn't do anything about it because she delivered the goods and they are so proud their Perfect Thief can be productive even with blurred vision, nausea, and feeling like she got kicked in the head by a herd of mules).

Also seconding every one of Mari's 'dark!Carmen being crap at taking care of herself' headcanons. Only eats if someone reminds/forces her, and even then it's just a bite or two, almost never sleeps, and when she does it's a crash that she won't let last for too long, and God forbid she rests if she's not feeling well (Gray suggested it once, when she was too ill to hide it; she clocked him good for that).

When she's finally back in her own mind, she realizes just how much her body and mind have been damaged, and it's...hard, for her and the rest of the Team.

GAH SO MANY IDEAS!!! Gonna hafta play with this one. MARI AND ANON, YOU HAVE UNLOCKED SOMETHING!!!

I actually had a dream last night where I was wondering how they would deal with a very terrified Carmen— given that she’s too stressed to be operated on, can’t be sedated during the procedure, and Brunt is doing far more harm than good here

…so what if they happened to have a very desperate Shadowsan on hand? Maybe Carmen will respond to familiar comfort (unsure if she remembers him. Because the image of him being the only thing she does or doesn’t remember are both such sad images)

Either way, Carmen waking up with him chained in the corner of her cell. His voice a sweet song she hasn’t heard in a lifetime— not sure if she can identify it but her heart positively melts in its embrace. Gently coaxing her towards him, telling her she’s okay, he’s here, he came for her, of course he did, he’ll protect her

For once she doesn’t scream, doesn’t bolt, nor slam her head against the wall like she so wanted to…

She hesitantly approaches him, little by little, as he encourages her forth like a beaten stray cat. And once she allows his arms, his warm blanketing arms around her, she melts. Curls up as tight as she can (god, it’s absolutely ruining Shadowsan to see her like this) and openly sobs in his arms.

She’s so confused and tired and sore all over, it’s overwhelming. She just wants to hide in his arms and forget she exists. Shadowsan holds her as close as he can, no matter the strain on his chained limbs. He runs a hand through her hair and whispers in Japanese. First comforts, then tells her the made by a spear story as many times as she asks for it

Shadowsan realises quickly she’s acting strange, and may have a clue of VILE’s plans, but he has no idea he’s actively helping her be brainwashed…

Also just… consider when she’s back/during the dark red arc recovery

Shadowsan: …I was in the beginning, yes.

Something that I do feel like they would do as well. Would most likely be Dr Bellum and Maelstrom. Doing a full medical check on her either she was unconscious or away and if they couldn't do it like that get her medical records from every hospital she would have been at to explain like especially after Stockholm.
