by some miracle, it appears she reciprocates his feelings. something he'd dreamed of since the first day she arrived at the circle. he expected it to go away after some time, but the more he got to know her, the deeper he fell. she was the only one who never judged him for what he did before. the only one who took an interest in the area of magic he chose to study. he never thought she might feel the same. he was so happy she did.

kaidan takes her face in his hands, grinning as he looks at her this closely. he's never done so before — her cheeks are so smooth, her eyes so expressive. “ well, harry, i'd hate to disappoint you. ” he grins, thumb brushing over her cheeks before he finally leans in and kisses her. it feels like he's going to explode, like a firework at some festival he'd watch from his window while staying in the circle tower. she's welcoming, soft, comforting — everything he ever hoped she'd be. the kiss was all he'd hoped it be too, and more. “ i never thought you'd feel the same — i never thought we'd do this. ”

his hands against her face, lungs still unable to get a full breath beneath them, she can only see how bright his eyes are. he calls her nickname, she wants to hear it again, a buckling at her knees — since when does she go weak? there has never been a moment in her life where she felt as she did now, soft and tender, vulnerable. thumb against her cheek, a gentle caress as he leans in, and she feels the soft touch of his lips on hers. la'harya is dizzy with it, the only balance his touch against her; her own hand comes up for purchase, staying against kaidan's jaw, indulgent in the way fingers curl slightly, only just feeling the scratch of her nails against skin. she lets out a muffled hum into his lips as lungs finally breath again.

when they break, she almost chases after him, a wanting settling into her bones for him. when had she ever wanted before? had there ever been anyone but him? i never thought you'd feel the same — was there ever a point where she didn't? under the surface, a second pulse, unnoticeable yet finely tuned: la'harya thinks it's always been there, some facet of affection, written into the makeup of their friendship, sowing the seeds for later reaping. the way he would sit with her at lunch, gazing across the table; her willingness to do the work he struggled with, putting in a good word with the enchanters and irving. her eyes open, staring into his. she's aware hers look different now, the joining having altered everything about her, and yet he is still here. “ i don't think i realized what i was missing, back in the circle. i didn't know . . . what this was. ”

SHE HASN'T KNOWN what to think since La'harya had stumbled out of the remains of the Conclave, litters of dead bodies strewn on the rubble-dusted ground like marbles dropped onto the floor. Perhaps the first question was this: why did so much happen to one woman? One Warden, one mage, one commander, one hero--being a hero had always been sung of as a good thing, a positive thing, and for those being saved, it was. For the hero... it was not. Being a hero was a life of constant martyrdom, of making terrible decisions and having the ones you want to make taken away from you.

Cassandra thought of La'harya with a degree of pity. To be dubbed a hero once was enough for a lifetime. To be heralded as one twice was a misfortune, and that was disregarding the title of Andraste's Herald following her around. There had been many a heated discussions with Leliana behind closed doors, debates, wonderings, but no proof, only rumors. And perhaps that's all they ever would be--rumors.

The seeker was not blind. Why would an elf want to be associated with the Chantry anyways?

Years of practice brought a pitiful pile of frozen sticks to a roaring blaze within minutes. Cassandra had brought it upon herself to hang a pot of water to boil, something to heat their bones, along with some haphazardly placed torn pieces of rucksack to sit on instead of snow. She was just kneeling to check on the heat balm near the fire when La'harya's voice fell upon her ears.

"Thank you." It was clipped; short with the Inquisitor. The momentary silence tells her that there is more to be said, the crunch of footsteps absent.

The balm has begun melting, but still remains solid at the bottom. Not ready yet. "Were it towards someone who was afraid of you, perhaps the circumstances would be different," Cassandra replies evenly. She sighs, then, as if to relinquish the irritation towards La'harya. "This... is not easy. We all know this, most of all you," she observes, looking to the other woman when she gets to her feet. She brushes snow off of her knees.

A single gloved hand points to La'harya's hip. The leather trembles minutely. Cassandra pretends not to notice. "Sitting by the fire may help with that. It is no tincture, but I am warming a balm as we speak." The hand lowers to her side, clenched in a fist. "The cold always makes things worse."

“ even before the injury i was a bitch in the cold, it's no excuse. ” tell her you're grateful for heating a balm, but the words can't get past her throat, stuck in her closed esophagus. la'harya follows cassandra's advice, taking a seat on a laid out rucksack; the cold seeps in through her pants, and she knows that standing again is going to be a pain, but thank the gods it's not wet yet, the warmth from the fire hitting her knees at a comfortable distance.

she's not an idiot: la'harya saw cassandra's own hand twitching, the cold disturbing her joints just as bad. the seeker was quiet about it, however; there had been no inclination of sort that her companion had injury akin to hers in any measurement. la'harya wonders if that is by design: if there is no one who knows, there is no one who underestimates you. she is not so fortunate in this aspect, her own scars existing in the minds of everyone present in denerim, and word spread almost too quickly of her predicament; too many wondering if she'd live through the disaster, if the blight had not taken her, would her casualty be attributed to the aftereffects? wynne had worked tirelessly on her hip before running out of lyrium, before they dragged her from the top of fort drakon. she was limp in their arms, held barely aloft by magic that attempted to sew her broken ligaments together again.

cassandra is not afraid of her. it's a relief in some aspect, to be thought of as just someone, and not the girl who survived a blight, not the girl who murdered a man with magic. “ leli was the one who told me, you know. after the archdemon was dead, she came to me and told me that she'd heard rumblings from her chantry friends that divine beatrix iii wanted me . . . taken in. there was rumor that i would be made tranquil. ” a deep breath as she remembers leliana's hands grasping her own, leaning in to kiss her cheek and whisper in her ear, the look of anger that crossed alistair's face as she told him she was leaving, discarding the arlship he offered. “ they were all afraid of me, of what i'd done, of what i lived through. i don't think a single one of them expected me to live past the blight, that i'd die in battle. ”

#SOMEONE STOP THE MADNESS IN MY BRAIN

once again thinking about how focused harry has to be to use magic without a staff/focal object. how intense she is when she casts storm spells. how she can have a lightning storm going at the same time she casts glyphs, three or four of them activated on the floor as she uses lightning arcs between bodies. her magic being so real that it sends people's hair floating with static. her teeth feeling weird when she exerts herself too much.

thank you to everyone who talked to me and sent positive vibes out 💕 my baby is home, and for the most part she’s okay. it was definitely a stroke, and we think she might be showing early signs of heart disease so we’ve gotta make some dietary changes and keep an eye on her
