Golden Gate National Recreation Area is literally across the bridge from downtown San Francisco. The Marin Headlands area, which you see here, features fantastic views of the bridge and downtown. You may notice it was a tad foggy when I visited.
The San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park honors the rich, maritime and shipping history of the west coast.
Alcatraz Island, known as “The Rock,” features quite the contrast. On one hand, the tour of the infamous federal penitentiary takes you back in time to show you where some of the worst criminals in our country’s history lived. On the other hand, the island also features amazing sunsets over the Golden Gate Bridge and views of downtown San Francisco. I highly recommend the night tour.
Muir Woods National Monument is just across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco. This redwood forest is said to be the last one remaining close to the city. The park itself features a paved, two-mile trail through the redwoods - but it connects to Mount Tamalpais State Park for longer hikes to Muir Beach and surrounding areas.
A short drive from Los Angeles, the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area features hundreds of miles of hiking trails and fantastic views of Malibu and the Pacific.
Point Reyes National Seashore is about an hour north of San Francisco, California. A journey to the beaches will provide insane views of the sunset over the Pacific.
Channel Islands National Park is a string of five amazing islands off the coast of California. (I missed the last boat to see the islands, so that explains the pictures here.)
Rosie the Riveter/WWII Home Front National Historical Park honors the hard work and sacrifices women played here at home during World War II.
John Muir National Historic Site, located in Martinez, California, is the former home of the man known as the “Father of the National Parks.”
One of the most scenic areas in the country, Joshua Tree National Park is home to amazing hiking and geological features you won’t see anywhere else, including it’s namesake - the Joshua Tree.
Cabrillo National Monument is a short drive from downtown San Diego, California. The national park property tells the story of 16th century exploration, and it features amazing views of San Diego.
Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park, just outside of Mission, is a premier birding park. Take a few minutes to stop in one of the bird blinds and observe cardinals and other beautiful birds.
San Jacinto Battleground and Monument State Historic Site marks the Battle of San Jacinto, where Sam Houston's troops defeated Santa Anna and his Mexican army - thus securing Texas' independence.
You can find Battleship Texas State Historic Site right across the street from San Jacinto Battleground. The Texas launched in 1912 and fought in both World Wars.
Sheldon Lake State Park and Environmental Learning Center is located in northwest Houston. It offers places for children and families to fish, learn about wildlife and walk the trails among native species.
Stephen F. Austin State Park is located in San Felipe, just a few miles away from Austin's first colony that was established here in Texas. As for the park, it features some short (but interesting) hikes, including some great views of the Brazos River.
Washington-on-the-Brazos is known as the birthplace of Texas. It was here, in Independence Hall in 1836, where our state's founders signed the Declaration of Independence from Mexico.
