Doomed Siblings: A Theory on Hanako and Tsukasa’s Tragic Sacrifice
As far as we know:
In chapter 82 it's said that Hanako died after killing Tsukasa, most likely by suicide, but other circumstances are unknown.
In chapter 91, Tsukasa calls Hanako selfish for wishing to save Nene by sacrificing Aoi, not caring if that's what she would've wanted.
Ch 110: Hanako tells Tsukasa that if he disappears, he won't be able to save him.
To which Tsukasa responds with indifference, because he wants Hanako's wish, whatever it may be, to be fulfilled, and calls him strange for saying that when Hanako made it clear he hates him; adding: and yet you hate the idea of never seeing me again! You haven't changed one bit.
This led me to think that Hanako did try to save Tsukasa before. Whether he thought that killing his brother would liberate him, or by doing something that would turn himself into a supernatural, after which he may be granted a wish later on. We don't know what Hanako's wish is, but what if it is to save his brother? We still don't know the details of how a person becomes a supernatural, except that they're people who had regrets, but as stated in ch 91:
What if Tsukasa was talking about their situation when he called Hanako selfish? What if he's actually telling him that he's selfish for giving up his life to try and save him?
Because Tsukasa already gave himself up when they were kids so that Hanako would live, and then he throws that life away, all to save Tsukasa back, without even asking him if he wants to be saved. And now Hanako is doing that once again with Nene.
It upset Tsukasa, and if you look closely, this is the closest he's ever been to crying. Because it would mean his sacrifice was pointless. He gave everything, and it wasn't enough. He is angry Hanako can't let him go, when he willingly did it all so Hanako would live. Moreover, we see throughout the whole manga that Tsukasa holds no grudge against him, he loves him so deeply that he doesn’t even mind being killed by him.
It makes sense why Hanako's plan was to sacrifice Aoi instead of just destroying all yorishiro, because while he wants to save Nene, he doesn't want to lose Tsukasa either, and deep down he knows that it is the real Tsukasa; but at the same time he is afraid of admitting it, calling him a fake instead, because otherwise it would mean he really did kill the person who loved him the most.
What if Hanako was trying to repair the school's clock when he was alive, in order to go back in time and make it so that Tsukasa never disappeared aka never came in contact with the pit god? And Tsukasa did not allow him to do that, because, without his sacrifice, his brother would've died of his illness. What if that was Hanako's wish?
Now, what if Tsukasa no longer cares about Hanako’s original wish, even encouraging him to destroy all yorishiro, because he knows it’s changed? He believes Hanako will, and must, choose Nene over him, and yet, he doesn’t mind. He would give everything, even his existence, for his brother.
They are both selfless, and that is the problem. Tsukasa gave himself up to save Hanako, to give him a chance at life, not asking if that's what he would've wanted. Because he decided it's worth it. And in the same way, Hanako threw away that life which was given to him, because of his guilt. He wanted to save Tsukasa, and he also decided it's worth it. They’re both so caught up in being the one who sacrifices that they never once stopped to think how the other would feel.
