Daily Writing Challenge - Day 11 - "Moonlight/Watch"
The woods were quiet as the moon hung overhead. But the air was full of tension even with the gentle breeze that wafted through the leaves. Damian had taken a position over 100 ft. away and had his rifle at the ready.
"Darlin', I was pretty sure we retired."
Gaia adjusted the com along with her ear and studied the clearing in front of her. In a low whisper, she answered in kind.
"The world doesn't stop turning even if it's tired. And we just found out what lies in store when we pass on... Might as well get used to the disappointment."
"Just a ray of sunshine you are today," Damian quipped. "Love you too."
She couldn't help but chuckle lightly and think back to the debriefing at SI:7. Ever since she had joined the Alliance, there was an unending stream of orders from King Anduin Wrynn. He was much like his father in the regard that when you are the High King - work is the air you breathe.
At the table in the SI:7 Headquarters, Spymaster Mathias Shaw was quick as ever to summon Commander Damian Jharol and his wife Gaia Jharol. They had been some of his best in the field, and the compensation for protection and promising future for Visenya was too hard to let pass. While Songla was always willing to watch their child and the bronze whelp, it didn't sit well to always take her away from her duties as a healer as well.
"Shall we get to business? Several of our operatives have started to go missing in Duskwood. The former scouts were investigating magical anomalies at the Twilight Grove. While this should fall into the realm of the Emerald Dragonflight or Night Elves, it appears they too have become victim to some sort of attacker."
The Spymaster would straighten his posture and gesture to the map. "Here are several places where our men went missing. Your mission is to investigate what is happening in the Grove and to recover our missing men. Agent Dwight Hailey, Jaclyn Smith, and Jaron Atterton are the agents previously assigned. Report any of your findings over the com to me and stay in the shadows."
"Have you seen anything?" She whispered in her com to Damian.
"Nothing yet."
Just then a few feet ahead of her, she could make out rustling in the bushes leading up to the path into the Twilight Grove.
"Based on the attacks, Damian... it seems random." She adjusted her hood and knelt down to examine tracks that were days old. "Not to mention that we're going on a cold trail."
"Well for now, just stay in your position. I'd rather have my eye on you and your surroundings before trouble finds you. You do have a tendency to draw out the worst of our foes..."
Gaia scoffed and nodded. That was enough conversation while in the field. Especially if they didn't want to alert anyone else... Minutes quickly turned into hours and the suspense of the unknown was putting Gaia on edge. They had been on watch for approximately 6 hours and there were no visuals or signs of foul play.
As she was getting ready to stand, the sound of a blade escaping its sheathe could be heard. Followed by the sound of a gasp behind her. She whirled around as her com chirped in her ear.
"You okay, Gaia?"
"Yeah," she replied before kneeling down to examine her attacker. The features of this woman were hidden by a mask and hood. But she didn't appear to be a bandit or SI:7 secret agent. Her armor was black and the insignia on her chest appeared to be a shape of a talon.
"I think the Blacktalon are involved," she comments lightly.
"The Blacktalon?" Damian's voice repeated over the com. "Well shit."
"I don't imagine our King will be too pleased to hear about the Black Prince Wrathion's involvement here... And it doesn't explain our missing operatives..." Gaia rose from the body with a missive in hand and then reviewed it. A hand slipped up to her com as she spoke."I got a bad feeling about this..."

Perhaps at another time, Bastion might have appeared like a paradise but in Gaia’s eyes this place was a fragmented world with so much taken from it. On a similar notion, she could empathize given her loss of Damian to the Maw. The drought induced by the lack of anima had caused numerous problems for the Kyrian. And while she would have elected to not be a part of it, she didn’t have the strength to deal with the Jailer and his armies.Â
Enforced by this obligation was the little owl servant Ipa, who offered her a puzzled look. They were staking out on a hill overlooking the Temple of Purity. A series of malformed shadow creatures scurried across the stone paths leading throughout the enclave. And it was swarmed with Mawsworn Acolytes and Ascended. Feeling along the rifle that had belonged to Damian, she felt an even greater burden weighing on her. Void-touched hands glided along the chamber and back towards the bolt. As she released it, the set pin fell into place as she pulled back the cylinder from the receiver. Turning it over, she ensured the safety was off and proceeded to pull the trigger at the same time. A soft click could be heard, as she placed the first bullet. It slid into the groove as she went about the motions to seal it away. “Ipa, you might want to stand back and cover your ears,” she stated. The rifle was set onto two legs as she peered into the scope, and removed the safety. Ipa makes a nervous sound behind her and nods. The steward found a rock larger than herself to duck behind as Gaia laid along the golden grass. Â
As she lay down against the golden grass, she couldn’t help but think back to when Damian had taught her to use it. She takes a deep breath as she focuses on her target. Within the crosshairs she could see a blur of shadow flyby. Rather than follow it, she sought the target furthest from her. Eventually, an armored mawsworn would line up in the lens. Resting her finger along the trigger, she kept that breath held in. Her lips pursing as she felt a wave of confidence wash over her. Curling her finger, the trigger was pulled and the rifle fired. It was near immediate how it played out in the lens. One moment the Mawsworn was flying and appearing unbothered, then in a fraction of that second the hit landed and they began to fall.Â
There was a certain grace about it. And she continued to watch through the scope as more Mawsworn gathered to their fallen ally. Some were likely seeking her, but most had no idea where to look. Ipa had yelped, but she could still hear the ringing in her ears from the shot.Â
The end of the valve had steam rising up from it after the bullet had passed. But it seemed to be working just fine. Maybe dust had collected and burned since she hadn’t been as caring to it as Damian was. Slowly, she began to sit up and looked back towards Ipa.Â
“Well, let’s move to a new position… Let’s keep them on their toes.” And with that, she began to pick up the rifle and start towards a new location.
